UmiCon Daytona Preview: Interview with Actor Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead, Westworld, Grand Theft Auto)
If you don’t recognize his face as soon as you see him, Steven Ogg’s voice will certainly give him away. The charismatic actor gained notoriety portraying the critically acclaimed ‘Trevor Phillips’ in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V.
Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ogg has been acting nearly all his life. Some recent notable appearances include Grand Theft Auto V, Comedy Central’s Broad City, and AMC’s Better Call Saul. Fans of AMC’s mega-hit, The Walking Dead, know Ogg as one of the ‘Saviors’ that led Rick and company into Negan’s trap. (Keep an eye out for Ogg when TWD returns this fall as he has been filming for their 7th season). Ogg will also be seen this fall in the HBO series Westworld, an adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel and 1973 sci-fi film of the same name. Ogg will be appearing at UmiCon Daytona next month!
Here is a taste of our Q&A…
CS: Do you have any preference between doing voice work to traditional acting roles?
SO: The voice acting thing, it gets that sort of label, but it’s something I’ve never recognized because I think acting is acting. Really, you’re either working or you’re not. That’s the difference.
…With these different mediums, like obviously with GTA, the video game was a motion capture, which is basically an animated performance. So take any performance, be it theater, film, TV, or any other medium and animate it, and that’s what the video game experience was, primarily. Of course, there was some recorded dialogue, where we’re just in the car talking, and that’s strictly voice-over. But certainly, any of the voice acting, for me, it’s still words that you have to communicate. That’s your job.
CS: And, you started with community theater, is that correct?
SO: I did, yeah. I started in Alberta, Canada. The theater is where I began. And that’s the same thing; you get a play, you read, and you have to communicate those words and create a character, and serve the writer.
CS: Have you ever done a musical?
SO: I love music. I’m not a musical theater guy, but I’ve always wanted to do, actually, something where you do like [pauses] Moulin Rouge! You remember when Baz Luhrmann did Moulin Rouge! with Ewan McGregor? That! I mean, Ewan McGregor [sighs] It’s like the guy smiles and I melt. I’m like, Oh your beautiful smile! I love that idea of doing something like that, but I thought even their voices were too good! Like it would be interesting to do something where you have-I’m trying to come up with a better example-but where you have someone break into song, but they’re not…It’s not about the quality of the voice, it’s just about the passion.
… You just start singing cause you love that song or it represents another way to communicate. I’m always quoting song lyrics and singing away, but as far as me going and doing Phantom of the Opera with Norm Lewis? No. No, thanks.
CS: [On TWD season 6 finale] Does anybody come up to you and start doing that whistle?
SO: Interestingly, no. People talk about it, like ‘that whistle creeps me out’ [starts whistling into the phone]
CS: That was one of the creepiest things!
SO: Yeah, they created something really good and creepy with that one. It’s weird cause like, most people come up and they either want me to be mean to them, or just curse at them, or pretend to strangle them. And I’m just like, really? Like, I’m the hug-it-out-guy. I mean, [in a ‘Trevor’-sounding voice] I’ll hold you for an uncomfortably long time, maybe a little too close than you want. But I ain’t gonna strangle ya or swear atcha. I don’t want to do that.
[On his upcoming UmiCon Daytona appearance this September 9-11, 2016]
SO: Certainly, my priority is always work. So, if I have to be somewhere shooting and I’m working Monday, well then my focus is on working Monday, not the cons. But, when I have the time I certainly love to do them! And I certainly feel very grateful for the opportunity to do them. And, to meet people is great.
CS: I know that your fans are grateful that you do take the time to come and do that. We appreciate it.
SO: Well, it’s a mutual appreciation zone.
If you want to take part in the “appreciation zone”, be sure to come out and meet Steven Ogg, and many more, at UmiCon Daytona September 9-11, 2016.

About “The Walking Dead”
Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics, “The Walking Dead” reigns as television’s most watched drama for Adults 18-49. “The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse, and follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The series is executive produced by showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse.
About “Fear the Walking Dead”
As “Fear The Walking Dead” embarks on the second half of season two, the Clark, Manawa and Salazar families fracture. The events that took place at the Abigail compound have set all of our heroes adrift. Now they must forge their own paths to survive. “Fear the Walking Dead” is executive produced by showrunner Dave Erickson, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert and stars Kim Dickens as Madison, Cliff Curtis as Travis, Frank Dillane as Nick, Alycia Debnam-Carey as Alicia, Ruben Blades as Daniel, Mercedes Mason as Ofelia, Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris, Colman Domingo as Strand and Danay Garcia as Luciana.
Based on the popular cult comic book franchise of the same name, “Preacher” is a supernatural, twisted and darkly comedic drama that follows a Texas preacher named Jesse Custer, who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that causes him to develop a highly unusual power: the ability to make people do his bidding with just a word. Once this power attracts the attention of two mysterious angels (Fiore and DeBlanc), Jesse, his badass ex-girlfriend Tulip, and an Irish vampire named Cassidy are thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between. The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for television by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (“This Is the End,” “Superbad,” “Neighbors”) and showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”).
About “Geeking Out”
Hosted by Kevin Smith (“Comic Book Men,” “Clerks”) and Greg Grunberg (“Heroes, “Heroes Reborn” “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”), the 30-minute late-night talk show will take a timely look at pop culture through a fanboy lens and feature talk, clips, celebrity interviews and out-of-the-studio segments. The series is produced by Matador Content and The Weinstein Company in association with Bandwagon Media with Jay Peterson, Patrick Reardon, Smith and Grunberg serving as executive producers.
AMC is home to some of the most popular and acclaimed programs on television. AMC was the first basic cable network to ever win the Emmy(r) Award for Outstanding Drama Series with “Mad Men” in 2008, which then went on to win the coveted award four years in a row, before “Breaking Bad” won it in 2013 and 2014. The network’s series “The Walking Dead” is the highest-rated series in cable history and the number one show on television among adults 18-49 for the last four years. AMC’s other current original drama series include “Better Call Saul,” “Hell on Wheels,” “Turn: Washington’s Spies,” “Halt and Catch Fire,” “Humans,” “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Into the Badlands” and the forthcoming “The Night Manager,” “Feed the Beast,” “Preacher,” “The Son” and “The Terror.” AMC also explores authentic worlds and discussion with original shows like “Talking Dead,” “The Making of The Mob,” “Comic Book Men” and the upcoming “Ride with Norman Reedus” and “The American West.” AMC is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc. and its sister networks include IFC, SundanceTV, BBC America and WE tv. AMC is available across all platforms, including on-air, online, on demand and mobile.

Set in the late 1980s, “Hap and Leonard” is a darkly comic swamp noir story of two best friends, one femme fatale, a crew of washed-up revolutionaries, a pair of murderous psycho-killers, some lost loot and the fuzz. Based on the novels by Joe Lansdale, the six-hour series event follows Hap Collins (Purefoy), an East Texas white boy with a weakness for Southern women, and Leonard Pine (Williams), a gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. When Hap’s seductive ex-wife Trudy (Hendricks) resurfaces with a deal they can’t refuse, a simple get-rich-quick scheme snowballs into bloody mayhem. Chock full of eccentric characters, “Hap and Leonard” provides a country twist on the classic mystery thriller.

Comments Off on The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira Appears at Awesome Con 2014
Awesome Con welcomes DANAI GURIRA (Michonne on The Walking Dead) to their 2014 show! Danai will be appearing both Saturday and Sunday. She joins a lineup including fan favorites like Billie Piper, George Perez, Cary Elwes, Steve Niles, Sean Astin, Marc Hempel, Ron Glass, Jewel Staite, Timothy Zahn, and many more!
About Danai Gurira:
Actress and playwright Danai Gurira stars as one of the most popular characters in AMC’s critically-acclaimed original series “The Walking Dead.” Based on one of the most successful comic books of all time, “The Walking Dead” follows a group of survivors who are searching for a safe home after a zombie apocalypse. In the season two finale, Gurira’s heroine ‘Michonne’ bursts onto the scene as the mysterious sword-wielding zombie slayer. “The Walking Dead” wrapped its third season in style, logging a monster 11 million total viewers for the season, making it the first original cable series ever to end the broadcast television season as the number one show in delivery for adults 18-49.
Prior to joining “The Walking Dead,” Gurira finished production on the independent drama “Mother of George,” the story of an African woman’s struggle after arriving in the U.S. to honor her heritage while attempting to define her new marriage in modern terms. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by Oscilloscope Laboratories. “Mother of George” will premiere in New York on September 13, 2013 and will expand to Los Angeles and an additional 10-20 markets the following week. Zeba Blay, from Indiewire, said “…Gurira, eerily luminescent in every frame, perfectly captures a part of the African experience – the struggle to reconcile tradition and heritage with modern, Western point-of-view.”
Gurira also starred in the multiple-award winning film “The Visitor,” opposite Richard Jenkins, in which she played a Senegalese immigrant in New York trying to survive while her illegal immigrant boyfriend is detained by the U.S. government. Other film credits include “Three Backyards” and “Restless City.” Her television credits include roles on “Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” “Lie to Me” as well as a recurring role on the HBO David Simon series “Treme.”
An award-winning playwright, her most recent play “The Convert” (Stavis Award) is an historical drama set in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Part of a trilogy Gurira is writing about her native country’s coming of age, the play ran at Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C. from February 13 to March 10, 2013.
Gurira was born in the U.S. and raised in Zimbabwe. She earned an MFA in theatre from NYU after moving back to the U.S. Her initial success was as the co-lead of “In the Continuum” (a play she co-created and co-wrote while in the acting program at NYU.) The upbeat powerful story focused on two women: one, an upper class, educated newscaster in Africa; the other, an impoverished teenager in south central L.A., who discover that they are HIV positive, and learn to cope in the face of hatred, discrimination and ignorance. Gurira performed the play off-Broadway, in numerous theaters around the U.S., and in Africa. She received numerous accolades including an Obie, the Outer Circle Critics John Gassner Award, the Global Tolerance Award (Friends of the United Nations) and the Theater Hall of Fame Honors. Gurira also received the Helen Hayes Award (Woolly Mammoth).
She subsequently received a grant for research in Liberia and Sierra Leone which resulted in her second play “Eclipsed”—the story of women abductees trying to survive during that region’s devastating civil war. Gurira won Best Playwright at the NAACP Theater Awards and Best New Play at Helen Hayes Awards. And, on Broadway, Gurira starred Bartlett Sher’s award winning revival of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” She also earned the Actor’s Equity Callaway Award for her performance as Isabella in the 2011 Shakespeare in the Park production of “Measure for Measure.”
Gurira is also a Hodder Fellow at Princeton and a commissioned playwright with Yale Rep. She is co-founder of Almasi (Al-ma-see), a Zimbabwean American Dramatic Arts Collaborative Organization. Their mission is to instill professional values, skills and practices in the Zimbabwean Dramatic Arts through education and collaboration with professional American dramatic artists and artistic institutions.
Gurira divides her time between New York and Los Angeles.
Awesome Con DC will be on April 18-20, 2014 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Show hours are 3pm-8pm Friday, 10am-7pm Saturday, and 10am-5pm Sunday. Details at the website: www.awesomecondc.com
