Hero Initiative Partners with The Walking Dead for First-Ever Image Comics “100 Project”

Press Release:

The Hero Initiative, the charity dedicated to helping comic creators in medical and financial need, has drawn great acclaim for its “100 Projects” in recent years, in which 100 artists draw an original cover on a special anniversary issue.

Now, after running projects with Marvel Comics, DC and Archie, Hero Initiative proudly announces that its latest and greatest “100 Project” will feature the best-selling comic of 2012—The Walking Dead #100. This marks the first time Hero has partnered in such a way with Image Comics and Skybound.

Artists including The Walking Dead illustrator, Charlie Adlard, will contribute original covers, as will other top talents such as Dan Brereton, Ian Churchill, Kevin Eastman, Joe Jusko, Dale Keown, and Whilce Portacio. And yes, even The Walking Dead creator/writer and Image Comics partner Robert Kirkman will contribute. (He can draw a little!)

The Walking Dead would have never become the success it’s become without the trailblazers who put in the hard work to make this industry live on into the future,” said Kirkman. “Doing things like this for The Hero Initiative, which helps creators who have fallen on hard times, is a way for Charlie Adlard and I to give back to the community that has provided us with countless hours of entertainment and also a pretty cushy living. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do.”

“They say charity begins at home. Well, I can’t think of one closer to that than the Hero Initiative,” said Adlard. “It’s great to be able to give back to the creators who inspired me.”

A public viewing of all 100 covers will be scheduled for winter of 2012-13, along with auctions of all the original covers. A book collecting all the art will be available in 2013.

Baltimore Comic-Con Welcomes the Creators of the New DCU in 2011

Press Release:

With September’s relaunch of 52 titles from DC Comics, the Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the addition of three creators heading up those titles – Scott Snyder, Paul Levitz, and Ron Marz - to the line-up for this year’s show.

Scott Snyder, who will be writing DC’s Batman and Swamp Thing, made a huge impact on the comic industry of the last year with his work on the New York Times bestselling series, American Vampire and his critically-acclaimed run on Detective Comics. Snyder is currently writing the Flashpoint tie-in miniseries, Project Superman. Snyder has been nominated for two Harvey Award this year in the categories of Best New Series and Most Promising New Talent for his work on American Vampire.

Paul Levitz, who will continue his run as writer on Legion of Super-Heroes in September, is a mainstay in the comic industry. For over 35 years, Levitz has served as a writer, editor, and executive at DC Comics. His work on the Legion throughout the late-’70s and ’80s is widely-regarded as some of the most quintessential stories in the DCU. In addition to writing Legion, it has just been announced that Levitz will be writing the 6-issue mini-series, The Huntress, beginning in October. This year, he received a Harvey Award nomination in the category of Best Biographical, Historical or Journalistic Presentation for his work on 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Myth-Making.

Ron Marz, who will usher Wildstorm’s Voodoo into the DCU in September, has been writing comics professionally since the early-’90s, having worked for such companies as Marvel, Dark Horse, CrossGen, Devil’s Due, Valiant, and DC. Well-known as one the creators who helped to revitalize both the Green Lantern franchise in the late-’90s and Top Cow’s Witchblade in 2004, Marz is currently working on the Top Cow series, Artifacts.

“DC’s announcement about the relaunch of their entire super-hero line rocked the comic industry and will redefined their characters for years to come,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “We’re so excited to have some of the A-crop creators behind this momentous move join us for this year’s show!”
