Chris Foss signs Hardware, the definitive collection of his SF art, at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR, on Thursday 21st July from 6 – 7pm.
Exploding into prominence in the early 70s, Foss’s aesthetic became the defining template for how we pictured the hardware of tomorrow. Dramatically raising the bar for realism and invention, his trademark battle-weary spacecraft, dramatic alien landscapes, blisteringly bright explosions and crumbling architecture irrevocably changed the aesthetic of science fiction art and cinema.
Featuring work for books by Isaac Asimov, E. E. ‘Doc’ Smith, Arthur C. Clarke, Douglas Adams and Philip K. Dick, and film design for Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick, Hardware brings together many rare and classic images.
Chris Foss’s innovative work revolutionised science fiction paperback art in the 70s and 80s. He has illustrated hundreds of books, including The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Bicentennial Man, and the original black and white edition of The Joy of Sex. He produced the UK paperback covers for Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy, worked with Moebius on concepts for the unrealised Jodorowsky Dune movie, with H.R. Geiger on Alien, as well as on Superman.
