DC’s Writers Workshop will begin accepting online applications on March 1, through March 31, 2017.

DC’s Talent Development Workshops are led by an all-star talent line-up including Jim Lee, Scott Snyder, Klaus Janson and Andy Kubert. The series of workshops are designed to give access and a voice to new and prospective talent, providing an opportunity to showcase their work following intensive DC workshop sessions.

DC’s Talent Development website offers extensive tips, advice and recommended reading to help potential applicants navigate the submission process. Both workshops will take place in fall 2017.

“Following a highly successful inaugural year that saw DC Workshop alum receiving numerous assignments on our books, we’re excited to embark upon a new search for up and coming talent with the 2017 Workshops,” stated DC Entertainment Vice President of Talent Development, Bobbie Chase.

About the Artists Workshop

For selected candidates, the 2017 DC Writers Workshop will run in the summer/fall as an online real-time, weekly interactive seminar, for thirteen consecutive weeks. 000-march-awards

Press Release:

The bestselling March graphic novel trilogy broke new records yesterday by winning four major awards in the American Library Association’s Youth Media Awards, more than any book in the awards’ history. March: Book Three, the concluding volume by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell, was announced as the winner of:

  • the Coretta Scott King Book Award (for outstanding African-American books for youth),
  • the Michael L. Printz Award (for excellence in young adult literature),
  • the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award (for most distinguished informational book for children),
  • and the YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults.

These honors for March: Book Three follow closely on the heels of the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature – Young Adult Category, making it the first book to win both the Printz and the National Book Award.

“I’m delighted and honored that America’s librarians are supporting March with these awards,” said Congressman Lewis. “I love books and I love librarians. When I was growing up I tried to read every single thing I could. I hope these awards will help inspire all of our young people — and some of us not so young — to read, to learn, and to act. March is a guidebook reminding us that we all must speak up and stand up for what is right, what is fair, and what is just.”

The March trilogy, which depicts Lewis’s firsthand account of the Civil Rights Movement, has previously won such honors as the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, the Eisner Award, two Harvey Awards, and a Coretta Scott King Author Honor. It is rapidly being adopted by universities and public school systems from New York to San Francisco, and recently spent six continuous weeks holding the top 3 spots on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Congressman Lewis accepted the YALSA Nonfiction Award on behalf of the three creators yesterday at the ALA Midwinter Conference in Atlanta. The King, Printz, and Sibert Awards will be handed out in ceremonies at the ALA Annual Conference in June.

Chris Evans Surprises Comic Fans at Local Shop

000 cevans comicazi

Some lucky fans got a big surprise when actor Chris Evans unexpectedly showed up at Comicazi, a comic shop in Somerville, MA, for a series of pranks which were captured on video (see below). The event was organized to advertise a contest Evans is currently running with Omaze in which participants contribute to charity for a chance to meet and participate in an escape room with him. Proceeds from the contest benefit Christopher’s Haven, a local nonprofit that provides support to kids fighting cancer.

Comicazi co-owner Mike Burke said they were contacted out of the blue by Omaze, whose team had previously scouted the store and found it ideal for their purposes. “Once everything was finalized, they had a crew set the cameras up the day before,” said Burke. “The next day Chris Evans came in to participate and get the whole thing going. He was a very nice guy.”

A Boston native, Evans has appeared in several comic book based movies most notably as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has previously benefited Christopher’s Haven at their fundraiser and two years ago famously visited their patients alongside actor Chris Pratt after winning a bet with the star of Guardians of the Galaxy that the New England Patriots would defeat the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Broken Vows

Broken Vows, a New Film by Lionsgate Available Oct 11, 2016.

Experience the intensity of the psychological thriller Broken Vows when it arrives on DVD (plus Digital), Digital HD and On Demand October 11 from Lionsgate.

Over the years, the story of a cheating husband being stalked by a crazed ex-mistress has become something of a cliche. With Lionsgate’s latest direct-to-audience film, Broken Vows, the writers do a decent job of flipping the script. In the movie, Jaimie Alexander stars as a woman who must find the strength to escape the grasp of a psychotic stalker before he destroys everything and everyone she loves. Here is a detailed description:

“In this chilling, sexy thriller, Tara (Jaimie Alexander, TV’s “Blindspot”) finds her life unraveling after hooking up with bartender Patrick (Wes Bentley, The Hunger Games) during her bachelorette party in New Orleans. Patrick becomes obsessed with Tara, not knowing she’s about to marry Michael (Cam Gigandet, The Twilight Saga franchise), and tracks her down to her quiet California home. As Patrick’s obsession turns violent, Tara stands to not only lose her marriage and her loved ones, but also her life.”

Though the plot is a tad formulaic, the cast does an honorable job of working with what they’ve been given. The been-there-done-that feel of the story is quickly forgotten given the gender role reversal of sorts. Having a strong female lead is a nice change of pace. Jaimie Alexander may not have the longest resume in the business, but she is definitely one to keep an eye on. I was already a fan of her work on the series Blindspot, and this film is a nice vehicle for her to put aside her action-hero notoriety and stretch her emotional chops. Alexandra Breckenridge, coming off of a memorable stint on the series The Walking Dead, does a fine job as well. This isn’t exactly Fatal Attraction, but Broken Vows is a thriller worthy of your time.

And, what made that time more enjoyable for me was Wes Bentley. I’ve always been a sucker for stalker movies; what can I say? They creep me out. But, couple that with Bentley’s smoldering gaze (it’s like he’s looking through you) and that’s enough to keep me glued to the television. Whether your familiarity with his work comes from American Horror Story or all the way back to American Beauty, there’s no mistaking his understated ability to crawl under your skin. His intensity, even in lighter roles, is frightening, and for some reason I find that attractive. I get that I should probably have felt sorry for the poor, betrayed husband-to-be, played by Cam Gigandet, but I didn’t. His character, Michael, had a smugness about him. I can’t put my finger on what it was, but I can see how it would be easy to lose yourself in Bentley’s bartender. (There’s something wrong with me).

While this psychological thriller is somewhat predictable, it was well shot and still held enough twists and turns (stick with it til the end) to make it worth the hour and a half you’ll spend yelling at your TV. If the typical array of October/Halloween horror movies are not your cup of tea, I would recommend an evening of Broken Vows. The Broken Vows DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $19.98.

Scene and Reviewed: 6 Plots

October 5, 2016 by
Filed under Everything Else, Horror, Movies

6-plots-dvd

I want to play a game. The game is to count how many classic horror films were mimicked in the making of the Australian thriller 6 Plots. Right on the DVD cover you see references to Saw and Buried. Another review mentioned Hostel. You could make arguments for Cube, Vile, and The Hills Have Eyes. But the greatest debt owed by this movie is to an older film, one that helped originate the slasher genre despite itself being a suspense thriller (and a nonpareil one at that): Halloween.

SPOILERS:

Seven students at Oak Bay High School plan a Friday night bash. There will be music. Booze. Sex. Hijinks. The party will take place in a “borrowed” (read: they broke in) house on the beach. We see the kids doing what kids do at parties, every jiffy of which they intend to livestream on the Internet because–well, you’ve seen American Pie. Anyway, everybody passes out, and when one of the kids, Brie, wakes up, she notices the others have skedaddled.

As Brie gathers her stuff to head home, she gets a phone message from this guy.

emoticon

The message tells her to play a game, no parents, no authorities. The game: find her friends. All are locked in boxes and stashed around town. All can communicate with her via their phones. She is also sent video updates of their predicaments via the cameras installed in each box. Inevitably, parents get involved, as do the cops, so a few kids have to die. One is burned (she kept saying she was “covered in petrol”). Another is buried alive. A saw mill blade provides the most gruesome killing. Brie and the cops manage to save the other three, and a few weeks later, they are all back at school, cracking wise and calling one other “bitches.” Then they run into a creepy guy we saw for five seconds at the beginning of the film who makes some cryptic remarks in a basso profundo voice and walks away with the above emoticon on his skateboard. I guess he was the bad guy.

Did you catch all the Halloween analogs?

  1. Teenagers plan a gathering.
  2. They lie to their parents about it (in one geek-gasmic scene, a guy’s father calls home to check on him, and his buddy sitting in a different house answers the home phone using his cell phone and an “automated Skype message faker”).
  3. They use someone else’s house without permission.
  4. The girl with no boyfriend (Brie) becomes the savior.
  5. One victim’s father is the police chief.
  6. The whole thing is broadcast online (as in Halloween: Resurrection).

Now let me tell you what is not like Halloween: there isn’t one bit of menace in this movie. When there is a movie involving a villain, that villain is the film’s strength. Michael Myers’s mix of childlike wonder and unholy force is established from the first moment of Halloween, and it twists through all the films in the series. You can’t take your eyes off him. Ditto for John Kramer (aka, Jigsaw), Fred Krueger, Dracula, and all the great horror villains. Their personalities–Kramer’s cold logic, Krueger’s impishness, Dracula’s smug ferocity–make them compelling, while their motives make them scary.

What of the villain in 6 Plots? Other reviews call him The Emoticon, but I don’t recall anyone saying that in the film, and for good reason: it sounds like a lame Charlton Comics superhero. So he’s nameless, and until the final scene, he’s invisible. This is another mistake by the filmmakers. It isn’t necessary for the protagonists to meet the villain until the end–the Die Hard movies have mastered this approach–but it is necessary for the audience. How can we be afraid of someone we can’t connect with? As for motive, think of John Kramer’s aim: “to test the fabric of human existence.” It’s an unusual goal, lofty and sinister. The guy behind The Emoticon? His motive seems dull as driftwood.

The opening credits of 6 Plots include the line “Based on a concept by Leigh Sheehan and Tim C. Patterson.” Because these are the film’s director and writer, I wondered why they were credited this way, since “concept” seems an integral part of writing and directing. The unfortunate answer is that concept is most of this movie’s appeal. The non-villain characters are relatable, and the actors are good–so good I wanted to see interviews with them in the making-of documentary that forms the DVD’s sole special feature (I was disappointed). It is an interesting concept, though maybe too ambitious. With six victims to keep up with, I found myself getting confused.

Maybe 6 Plots should have stuck to one plot this time around.
