DC Entertainment announced a new identity and logo for its iconic DC brand. The new DC logo is a mark that leverages over 80 years of heritage with an eye toward the future.
“While comics continue to be the heart and soul of DC, the brand has evolved to now stand for powerful storytelling across so many different forms of media. DC is home to the greatest Super Heroes and Super-Villains, and the new logo has the character and strength to stand proudly alongside DC’s iconic symbols,” stated Amit Desai, DC Entertainment Senior Vice President of Marketing and Global Franchise Management.
“The launch of the new logo is the perfect tribute to DC’s legacy, exciting future and most importantly, our fans.”
The new logo will debut on the cover of the highly-anticipated DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH SPECIAL #1 comic book written by Geoff Johns releasing May 25 and available in comic book shops and digitally. REBIRTH represents the next chapter in the ongoing saga of the DC Universe, mixing traditional values and a modern aesthetic.
“I’m very proud that REBIRTH will be the first comic book published with the new DC logo.” stated Geoff Johns, DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer. “To me, REBIRTH and the new DC logo are built on what’s come before while looking to what will come tomorrow. One of the many benefits of the new logo design is its versatility to showcase DC’s iconic and timeless characters and stories across all media. SPOILERS: I do get into spoiler-territory here, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to skip this part.
I have to say… I have very mixed feelings about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I go way back with Star Wars… all the way back to 1977. Because my cousin wanted to see it, our whole family went to our local theater and saw the original. I was hooked. Naturally, I’ve seen every Star Wars movie since. But… like a lot of fans, I found the prequels a little wanting and felt that they tarnished Star Wars’s reputation. I was eager to see what Director J.J. Abrams and the folks at Disney had cooked up to take the bad taste of the prequels out of our mouths. For months as the trailers rolled out, I crossed my fingers and said, “Let it be good… let it be good… let it be good.” Having seen it, though, I came away disappointed. While I loved the new characters, especially Daisy Ridley’s Rey, I felt like the original characters really got the short end of the stick. All these years later, and either everything is the same or changed for the negative. Han and Leia broken up? Say it ain’t so! Stormtroopers running around…still?! Han back to being a smuggler…. really?! After becoming a military leader? And the movie robs us of the chance to see Han, Leia, and Luke all sharing the screen again.
So as far as the older characters go, I almost wish they had just set it farther into the future and just said the originals died happy deaths. Despite all my misgivings, I am still looking forward to Episode VIII. Hopefully, the next movie will be more about charging forward and less about looking back. I want to see the next chapter of Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren, and I want to see Luke Skywalker kick some butt!
Although I did not love the new movie, I still jumped at the chance to receive a copy of the Blu-ray Combo Pack to review. Deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes stuff, it’s packed with goodies!

In an effort to find new and aspiring comic book talent, DC Entertainment has launched Talent Development Workshops for both writers and artists, led by bestselling and acclaimed comic talent including Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder, Klaus Janson, and Andy Kubert. The series of workshops are designed to give access and a voice to new and prospective talent, providing an opportunity to showcase their work following intensive DC workshop sessions.
Online applications for DC’s Artists Workshop will be accepted April 1-30, 2016 while applications for the Writers Workshop will be accepted May 1-31, 2016. DC’s new Talent Development website offers extensive tips, advice and recommended reading to help potential applicants navigate the submission process. Both workshops will take place in fall 2016.

About the Artists Workshop

Competitive candidates will have an established portfolio of sequential art and illustrations. For the artists selected via the online submission process, the Workshop will provide the knowledge and exposure required to cross the threshold into the competitive world of comic book publishing. Chosen artists will be asked to complete art assignments that will be critiqued by several top DC Artists. If the artists achieve the level of work required for the course they will then be invited to a two-week, intensive workshop at DCE’s Burbank offices.
About the Writers Workshop
The 2016 Writers Workshop was developed by DC with bestselling writer Scott Snyder and follows a successful three-month pilot program. For selected candidates, the first part of the 2016–2017 DC Comics Writers Workshop will run October 2016–January 2017 as an online real-time, weekly interactive seminar, for thirteen consecutive weeks. Each seminar will teach a new skill essential for surviving and excelling in this highly competitive field. Following the initial Workshop, a smaller hand-selected group of those participants will be invited to DCE offices in Burbank for an intensive writing experience, featuring guest speakers currently working in comic books, including a mix of editors, writers, artists and the Talent Development staff.
Upon completion of the Master Class program, DCE’s Talent Development group will ensure successful participants are considered for positions on current DC titles.
AMC released today a teaser image of “The Walking Dead” character Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, along with his weapon of choice, “Lucille,” a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire. The iconic villain from Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel is set to make his debut in the show’s highly-anticipated season six finale this Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
Indy is coming back!
Disney just announced that Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford will return to one of their most famous franchises as Indiana Jones 5 opens on July 19, 2019.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios, in a news release. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

I was recently given the opportunity to review the movie Bridge of Spies, and, having missed it when it was in theaters, jumped at the chance.
Set during the Cold War, Bridge of Spies features Tom Hanks as lawyer James Donovan, who finds himself representing a Russian spy. Although Donovan is only supposed to go through the motions and provide a token defense of his client, he takes his role seriously and does everything he can to win the case and see that the legal proceeding are handled properly. Later in the film, he finds himself thrust by the CIA into negotiating the trade of his client for famed pilot Gary Powers, whom is being held by the Russians. Things are further complicated by the arrest of an American grad student by the East German government, in the midst of the building of the Berlin Wall. As Donovan does not work for the U.S. government, he risks his own health and safety in negotiating with the foreign powers.
I don’t know when was the last time I actually saw a Tom Hanks movie, but he is fine form here. Hanks is the central character in this movie and carries the weight of it. Except for two other minor subplots going on, Hanks is in every scene. All of the acting in the movie is top notch, and it was nice to see Alan Alda in a nice, albeit small, role.
I loved this movie, really. It looked great, the acting was great, and Steven Spielberg did a tremendous job of directing it. I must admit I was still expecting a third act twist to happen, but as this was based on true events, things unfolded the way they were supposed to.
The movie racked up six 2016 Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture, Actor in A Supporting Role (Mark Rylance), Original Score, Production Design, Sound Mixing and Original Screenplay.
