FIAF Montclair welcomes renowned Lebanese graphic novelist Joseph Kai on Wednesday, October 4th for an evening of conversation to celebrate the new English translation of his acclaimed first book, L’Intranquille (Casterman, 2021), now released as Restless (Street Noise, 2023).
The compelling story, inspired by the author’s life, takes place in contemporary Beirut—30 years after the country’s brutal civil war and months before the massive explosion of 2020—with powerful themes of art, sex, and political uprising explored through the eyes of a young, queer comic book artist named Samar. Restless, conveying Samar’s life experiences and memories with Kai’s preternatural color palette, reflects the author’s unease with Lebanon’s complexities and ever-shifting moods—a society where comic books can serve as a form of protest and a voice for change.
The evening will culminate in a Q&A, book signing, and reception. Wine, and Lebanese appetizers and desserts will be served. The book will be available for purchase at the event.
Presented in partnership with Out Montclair, Villa Albertine, and Watchung Booksellers.
Special thanks to Street Noise and Uncle Momo.
