Close Encounters of the Planet Kind: Academy Award-Winning Actor Richard Dreyfuss Coming to Planet Comicon Kansas City

Planet Comicon Kansas City, the region’s largest annual pop culture and comic book event, is set to return to the Kansas City Convention Center on March 17-19. This will be our 10th anniversary of moving to downtown Kansas City, another important moment in our pop culture-fueled mission that spans 24 years and counting. As we put the finishing touches on our incredible celebrity, creator, and cosplay guest lineup, we’re thrilled to welcome some amazing new additions to next month’s event.

Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss is coming to Planet Comicon Kansas City. Best known for his iconic roles in JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, AMERICAN GRAFFITI, and his Academy Award-winning role in THE GOODBYE GIRL, Dreyfuss becomes the first Oscar winner to attend the annual comic book and pop culture event, joining an impressive celebrity guest list that already includes William Shatner, Giancarlo Esposito, Jonathan Frakes, Diane Guerrero, Rachael Leigh Cook, William Daniels, and many others. Dreyfuss will be our guest for all three days.

We’re excited to welcome professional wrestler and actor Mercedes Varnado for Friday and Saturday only! Currently signed to New Japan Pro Wrestling, she’s known in the ring as Mercedes Moné. Outside the ring, she portrayed Koska Reeves in the second season of THE MANDALORIAN.

We’re also thrilled to welcome pop culture icon and author Cassandra Peterson for Friday and Saturday only! Best known as ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK, she is the original television horror hostess. Her 2021 memoir, YOURS CRUELLY, ELVIRA, became an instant New York Times bestseller and she recently appeared in Rob Zombie’s reboot of THE MUNSTERS.

Finally, we’re pleased to welcome Alex Kingston for all three days of Planet Comicon. Introduced to primetime American audiences in 1997 as Dr. Elizabeth Corday on NBC’s medical drama ER, Kingston’s later credits include the recurring role of River Song in DOCTOR WHO, Dinah Lance in the CW’s series ARROW, and Sarah Bishop in A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES.

We still have a little more than a month to go until our March event, so we might still have a surprise or two in store. Stay tuned, Planet peeps!
