Baltimore Comic-Con 2018 Announces Panel Programming

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – September 13, 2018 – The 19th annual Baltimore Comic-Con returns to the Baltimore Convention Center the weekend of September 28-30, 2018. Tickets are available now for General Admission, VIP, and Ringo Awards! Our Panel schedule is now set, and we’re excited to let you know what programming to look forward to at the show this year!
Friday features a look back at 40 years of Elfquest and 25 years of the team of Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett. You’ll also hear from some of the creators behind this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook and meet the Liberty Brigade.

Saturday, publisher panels include AHOY, Cave Pictures Publishing, and Valiant, spotlight panels on Jim Steranko, Frank Miller, Arthur Adams, and Jim Starlin. Meet media guests Katrina Law, Mike Colter, and Wil Wheaton. Plus, the comic adventures of Shazam! and a look at the connection between Music and Comics.

Sunday, check out panels from Valiant and AfterShock, and special panels with media guests Michael Copon, Erin Gray, Sherilyn Fenn, Tricia Helfer, and Zachary Levi. And don’t miss spotlight panels on Dan Slott, Brian Azzarello, P. Craig Russell, and Tony Isabella.

The Baltimore Comic-Con is pleased to host the debut of a new superhero team, The Liberty Brigade, featuring the return of various 1940s superheroes in a brand new WW II story. The Zero issue debuts here and a Kickstarter is currently running for an 80+ page graphic novel. Hear from the writer, Michael Finn and members of the Brigade team including: Mark Waid (editor), Barry Kitson (penciller), Mark Buckingham(contributor), Marty Baumann (logos and 1940 “fake” ads), Sean Chen (Baltimore Comic-Con program cover & t-shirt), and Caitlyn Reynolds (Assistant Editor – Production). They will tell you all about the team, the story, the Kickstarter, and the return of dozens of heroes from the Golden Age of Comics.

5:00-6:00 – The Terry Moore Universe Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook Panel

Characters from the work of Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise, Echo, Rachel Rising, Motor Girl) populate this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con Yearbook. Join Terry, designer/artist Thom Zahler and artists David Petersen, Katie Cook, and Jamal Igle for a look at this fantastic volume.

Jim Steranko is an innovator in comics with his work on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America, and The X-Men. In 1975, he created Red Tide, the First Modern Graphic Novel. He was also at the forefront of comics history with his two volume The History of Comics. Join Steranko and moderator John Workman as they look back at his astounding career as well as what the future holds.

12:15-1:15 – Batman’s Biggest Secret

In 1939, writer Bill Finger co-created a character that would become one of the most successful fictional icons in world history. In 1974, Bill died poor and unknown to the public. In 2015, defying longstanding odds, and after not one but three twists, his legacy was saved. This is the story of author Marc Tyler Nobleman‘s obsessive, unprecedented nine-year campaign to correct cultural history. It has inspired the book Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman, a TED Talk, and the feature documentary Batman & Bill, which has been called “the most important comic book movie ever made.”

Join artists from “Cartoonists Draw Blood” and National Cartoonists Society as they discuss our partnership with the American Red Cross. Since 2013, Carolyn Belefskihas organized several of the finest cartoonists in the Washington, DC area to devote their time and talents to sketch for blood donors annually. The reason is simple: it’s a great opportunity for cartoonists to serve their community while showcasing their art skills and encouraging blood donation – a single donation has the potential to save as many as three lives! The “Cartoonists Draw Blood” crew has expanded their activities beyond the drive by exhibiting work in gallery shows and producing anthology books. Learn about how they create their projects and how you have the potential to create comics for good.

Brian Azzarello is well known to comics fans for his work on 100 Bullets, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cage, and Moonshine. His newest book, Batman: Damned with artist Lee Bermejo, the first book in DC’s Black Label imprint, debuted recently. Join Azzarello for a lively discussion of his work.

The creator of Black Lightning has had a full career at Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and small presses, dabbling in prose, and hosting some of the coolest garage sales in America. The special guest chats about his career with moderator, and old pal, Robert Greenberger.

2:45-3:45 – Comics with a Point of View: Yours and MINE! 

Activism in comics has been a growing trend over the past few years, and the current political climate has created an immense need to champion causes. For that reason, ComicMix published Mine!, the Ringo-nominated comic anthology celebrating (and benefiting) the crucial work of Planned Parenthood. The editors, along with some of the contributors, will share why they support PP while exploring the creation of this anthology, and discuss how comics can support all sorts of causes, both yours and… well, you know. For five seasons, fans knew Zachary Levi as Chuck, and for years as Flynn Rider in the Disney movie Tangled and the television show Tangled: The Series. 2:00-3:00 – Superhero University with Chris Mariano and Adam Wallenta (OPEN TO FIRST 30 KIDS)

You won’t be able to fly and it won’t give you super powers, but you will learn all the ins and outs of superheroics from the industry’s top professors. PLUS you’ll have fun making your own cape and superhero mask! Come to this workshop as a kid, leave as a superhero!

3:00-4:00 – Imagination Aquarium with Jamar Nicholas

Ever find yourself stuck for cartoon ideas? Put on your wetsuit and dive into the IMAGINATION AQUARIUM, where cartoonist Jamar Nicholas will help you catch ideas in your net and create awesome cartoons!
