Press Release:
Trident Booksellers is excited to welcome Raúl “the Third” Gonzales and Diane Fraser on Monday, September 14th at 7:00 PM for a night of readings and discussion about their books Lowriders in Space and Growing Up Superheroes: The Extraordinary Adventures of Deihlia Nye.
Raúl “the Third” Gonzales, Illustrator, Lowriders In Space, and Diane Fraser, author, Growing Up Superheroes, The Extraordinary Adventures of Deihlia Nye, will conduct a panel discussion titled “Out of the Margins, Into the Center”. In this panel discussion, Raúl and Diane will discuss their experience developing books based around cultures and characters typically only depicted marginally in books and media. The subject of Lowriders in Space, an award winning graphic novel for children, is lowrider culture, set in a fantasy world that is based on Latino culture. Growing Up Superheroes is the author’s memoir about her niece, Deihlia Nye, a kick-ass girl with a disability who travels to France, Ecuador, and Hawaii in her wheelchair, who lives and works independently in Boston, has adventures every time she can, inspires everyone around her to take risks, and was a founder of Boston Social Nerds.
Latino culture, lowrider culture, and people with disabilities are rarely the subject and center of any mainstream book, TV show, or film. These books center around cultures and characters that haven’t been explored in mainstream media, offering rich, fresh perspectives and experiences for readers of all ages. Neither book hits readers over the head in its delivery of the subject, rather they’re both wildly entertaining, carrying the reader along on grand adventures.
