Comments Off on CA – Penny Dora and The Wishing Box Signing
Michael Stock, Sina Grace, and Hope Larson sign Penny Dora and The Wishing Box on Wednesday, November 5th at 7:00 PM.
Image Comics’ PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX – Once upon a time, “Part Time Punks” DJ and writer Michael Stock and artist Sina Grace (BURN THE ORPHANAGE, LI’L DEPRESSED BOY) conjured up a story about the ever-curious Penny Dora and the unexpected gift that arrives on her doorstep in PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX. This new fantasy adventure series will begin in November from Image Comics with a special 28-page first issue.
One day, a young girl named Penny Dora discovers a mysterious box on her front doorstep. It is a magic box with the power to grant wishes…but what she’s about to unwrap is the darker and creepier meaning behind the old adage, “be careful what you wish for.”
Stock cited his daughter for first inspiring him to write about Penny Dora’s adventures. “Penny Dora is actually based on a story my daughter Nico wrote when she was 8 years old for her school paper. The first issue is basically an expansion of her original story. S
ince then the story has grown through talks we had in the car on the way to school in the mornings via a playful papa/daughter back and forth game of ‘what if.’ The cat in the book, Iggy, is based on our cat (also named Iggy, and also a great lover of ham).”
Grace added: “The minute I read Michael’s scripts for the series, I was absolutely enchanted by Penny Dora and her world. It’s been a dream to breathe life into the adventures of fantastic and charming characters. I can’t wait for the world to see!”
PENNY DORA & THE WISHING BOX is an whimsical retelling of the Pandora myth and an all-ages fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Ted Naifeh’s Courtney Crumrin. Eisner Award winning cartoonist Hope Larson (A Wrinkle In Time, Mercury) provides the alternate cover for the 1st issue and lettering for the series.

Comments Off on CA – Comics, DIY and the L.A. Effect
L.A.’s reputation for attracting “self-makers” isn’t always complimentary. However, in the comics and graphic novels world positives definitely apply. And taking a look at the current Angelenos behind Meltdown University, Uncanny X-Force, and A Wrinkle in Time illustrates who’s coming to L.A. and what they’re making here.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, join The Crawford Family Forum at Hollywood’s NerdMelt Showroom for “Comics, DIY, and the L.A. Effect.” KPCC’s Mike Roe and guest panelists will discuss what place DIY has taken in the comics industry and their own careers, how living in a city with such social, cultural, and even geographical quirks has affected their work; and where they see the L.A. comics/graphic novels scene going in the future.
Sam Humphries is a comic book writer living in Los Angeles. His work includes Uncanny X-Force and The Ultimates (Marvel Comics), and the self-published Sacrifice and Our Love Is Real.
Hope Larson is a cartoonist and comics writer who got her start making mini-comics and selling them at conventions, and posting comics online. Her first graphic novels include Salamander Dream, A Wrinkle in Time, and Who Is AC? (forthcoming).
Jim Higgins is Meltdown University’s founding director/principal instructor, a CalArts and Otis College of Art and Design instructor, and editor/publisher of New Thing (an international short comic stories anthology). He was a DC Comics editor, and worked on the graphic novels A History of Violence, Road to Perdition, and Stuck Rubber Baby.
Mike Roe, KPCC’s pop culture blogger for “Without A Net,” is our resident comics (and comedy) aficionado. He also hosts the Geek Pilgrims podcast and spends most of his free time either performing improv or tweeting.

Comments Off on UK – Scott Pilgrim vs London
Bryan Lee O’Malley and Hope Larson sign at Gosh! Comics on Friday December 7, 2012 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm!
The last time we had Bryan Lee O’Malley in our shop was just before he got all gussied up for the red carpet premiere of Scott Pilgrim. That was two years ago so it’s about time we had him back — he still hasn’t seen our fancy new shop! This time he’s joined at the signing table by his phenomenally talented wife, Hope Larson, so you’re getting two great creators for the price of one signing line. It’s all happening on Friday the 7th of December, from 5pm to 7pm and you are invited. Find out who borrowed your Scott Pilgrims, ring them up and demand them back. You need to bring these tea-spattered and much-loved volumes along to Gosh! Comics and you can tell them we said so. But! If you’re new to the world of Larson and O’Malley and have no need to make demanding phonecalls, perhaps you would like to purchase some of these on the day instead:
From the Larson shelf you can have Gray Horses, her first book after the web-syndicated Salamander Dream (which is sadly unavailable), Chiggers, and it’s spiritual successor Mercury. Her latest book is a comics adaptaion of Madeline L’Engle‘s 1962 science-fiction novel, A Wrinkle in Time.
And from O’Malley you can have Lost at Sea, a road trip story from 2003, and all six Scott Pilgrim volumes. And! If you already own all the Scott Pilgrim volumes you might also be tempted at the last minute when you see the new colour hardcover editions — volumes 1 and 2 for £18.99 a pop.
If you can’t make it on the day and would like to request a signed book then send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll sort it out for you.

Hope Larson signs at Chapel Hill Comics on Sunday October 7, 2012 from 2:00 – 7:00 pm.
Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce our next big signing event: On Sunday, October 7, from 2pm until 4pm, cartoonist Hope Larson will sign her new graphic novel adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time!
The world already knows Meg and Charles Wallace Murry, Calvin O’Keefe, and the three Mrs-Who, Whatsit, and Which-the memorable and wonderful characters who fight off a dark force and save our universe in the Newbery award-winning classic A Wrinkle in Time. But in 50 years of publication, the book has never been illustrated. Now, Hope Larson takes the classic story to a new level with her vividly imagined interpretations of tessering and favorite characters like the Happy Medium and Aunt Beast. Perfect for old fans and winning over new ones, this graphic novel adaptation is a must-read.
Hope Larson is the author of four graphic novels, including Mercury and Chiggers. Her short comics have been featured on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times and in several anthologies, notably the Flight series and Image Comics’ Tori Amos-inspired Comic Book Tattoo.
Hope has been nominated for cartooning awards in the US, Canada and Europe, and is the recipient of a 2006 Ignatz Award and a 2007 Eisner Award. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Come meet Hope and pick up a copy of the graphic novel! It should be a blast!
Note: This signing takes place during Chapel Hill’s annual downtown festival, Festifall. There will be a lot going on, and it’ll be tons of fun, but you should plan your visit to the store accordingly!
