You may have watched hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons and Futurama without ever realising that they contain enough maths to form an entire university course. This is a unique opportunity to meet ex-computer scientist David X. Cohen and ex-physicist Simon Singh and to ask them about the mathematics hidden in two of the world’s favourite TV shows. Find out about Mersenne primes, Euler’s equation, Fermat’s Last Theorem and the unsolved riddle of P vs. NP, or just ask them about your favourite plots and characters from The Simpsons and Futurama.
Simon Singh received his PhD in particle physics from the University of Cambridge. A former BBC producer, he directed a BAFTA award-winning documentary on Fermat’s Last Theorem, and his book on the same subject became a No. 1 bestseller. Singh presented a Channel 4 series based on his second book, a bestseller entitled The Code Book. His latest book is The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets.
David X. Cohen holds a Masters degree in Theoretical Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley, as well as a Bachelors degree in Physics from Harvard University. His main contribution to mathematics has been world-class research in the area of pancake sorting. He is Executive Producer of the critically-acclaimed animated series Futurama, and also spent five years as a writer for The Simpsons. He has won four Emmy Awards and four Annie Awards.

“Ugly Americans,” a new original animated comedy series, with two million total viewers, returns with new episodes on October 6 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. The series follows Mark Lilly (voiced by Matt Oberg), a social worker at the “Department of Integration,” as he helps new citizens, both human and “other,” adapt to hectic life in New York City. There are easier tasks than weaning vampires off blood, socializing land-whales and housebreaking werewolves, but Mark is up to the challenge. Between his stressful job, a zombie roommate and a demon girlfriend, Mark’s lucky if he can sneak in a few minutes of sleep.
