Jesse Eisenberg appears at Politics & Prose to sign his new book BREAM GIVES ME HICCUPS on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.
To accomplishments that include writing and acting in plays—most recently with Vanessa Redgrave—publishing in The New Yorker, and being nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Social Network, Eisenberg now adds a lively collection of short fiction. As likely to take place in a college dorm as in ancient Pompeii, the stories feature a diverse cast of characters and their miscommunications, from Alexander Graham Bell frustrated in reaching someone by phone, to a couple whose email exchange is hijacked by a relative obsessed with Bosnia.

Harvard Book Store welcomes JESSE EISENBERG—Academy Award-winning actor, playwright, and contributor for The New Yorker and McSweeney’s—for a presentation of his fiction debut, Bream Gives Me Hiccups.
Taking its title from a group of stories that begin the book, Bream Gives Me Hiccups moves from contemporary L.A. to the dorm rooms of an American college to ancient Pompeii, throwing the reader into a universe of social misfits, re-imagined scenes from history, and ridiculous overreactions. In one piece, a tense email exchange between a young man and his girlfriend is taken over by his sister, who is obsessed with the Bosnian genocide (The situation reminds me of a little historical blip called the Karadordevo agreement); in another, a college freshman forced to live with a roommate is stunned when one of her ramen packets goes missing (she didn’t have “one” of my ramens. She had a chicken ramen); in another piece, Alexander Graham Bell has teething problems with his invention (I’ve been calling Mabel all day, she doesn’t pick up! Yes, of course I dialed the right number – 2!).
United by Eisenberg’s gift for humor and character, and grouped into chapters that open with illustrations by award-winning cartoonist Jean Jullien, the witty pieces collected in Bream Gives Me Hiccups explore the various insanities of the modern world, and mark the arrival of a fantastically funny, self-ironic, and original voice.

Academy Award-nominated actress and musician Abigail Breslin is your best friend in her publishing debut, a collection of hilarious and heartfelt nonfiction essays on the subjects nearest and dearest to our hearts: love, loss, and Tumblr.
Growing up in film and the online era, Abigail knows better than anyone—it’s rough out there in love-land. And this generation is ill-prepared to handle it gracefully. Let’s be honest: if Cinderella had been on Twitter, she’d have ended up a crazy old cat lady like the rest of us. #realtalkSo when your “boyfriend” is liking different eligible young things’ selfies, what’s a modern ingenue to do? Put down the iPhone, step away from the hair dye, and ~chill~. Abbie is here with cautionary tales and solid advice on being a classy-ass lady in the digital age. Because, girls, we’re more than what meets the newsfeed. And this may sound crazy…But we’ve got this.
Plus, this book is gorgeous inside and out. With a foil cover and heavily designed interior, this collection will be the crowning jewel on any teen’s nightstand.
