CA – Love, Hate & Comics–The Friendship That Would Not Die

Matt Groening and Lynda Barry appear on Saturday, October 7 at 8:00 PM to reminisce about 40 years of friendship and creativity, aided by a homey and hilarious slideshow of photos and comics. An audience Q&A follows their talk. Tickets available at the link…

Matt Groening and Lynda Barry met at The Evergreen State College when he was editing the school paper and she was an aspiring comic artist. A lifetime later, the creator of The Simpsons, the animated sitcom that is now the longest-running scripted show in TV history, is still best buds with his “biggest inspiration,” the respected cartoonist and author of Ernie Pook’s Comeek fame.

PA – Picture This Signing

Lynda Barry signs on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 7:30PM.

Cartoonist, novelist, and playwright Lynda Barry writes and draws the nationally syndicated comic strip Ernie Pook’s Comeek, featuring pre-teen characters Marlys and Freddie as they navigate the emotional traumas of growing up. Barry is also the author of the Alex Award-winning book, One Hundred Demons, and The Good Times are Killing Me, which was adapted as an off-Broadway musical. Winner of a 2009 Eisner Award, her bestselling graphic memoir and how-to book What It Is offered writers gentle creative guidance. Barry offers the same guidance to artists in Picture This—encouraging us to draw and exploring why we start drawing and why we stop. Like What It Is, her new book is an extension of Barry’s popular traveling workshop, “Writing the Unthinkable.”

Join us for Happy Hour at the Free Library! Mix and mingle with other Lynda Barry fans and enjoy light drinks and refreshments before Lynda takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. in the Montgomery Auditorium. Happy Hour runs from 6:30 – 7:15 in Room 108.

Lynda Barry singlehandedly created a literary genre all her own, the graphic-memoir-how-to, otherwise known as the bestselling, the acclaimed, but most importantly, the adored and the inspirational What It Is. The R.R. Donelley and Eisner Award-winning book posed, explored and answered the question “Do you think you can write”? Now with Picture This, Barry asks “Why do we stop drawing?” and “Why do we start?” It is an inspirational, take home extension of Barry’s traveling, continually sold out, and sought after workshop, Writing The Unthinkable.
