Sam Humphries, Hope Larson, Jim Higgins, and moderator Mike Roe appear at Meltdown Comics on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 8:00 – 9:30 pm.
Press Release:
L.A.’s reputation for attracting “self-makers” isn’t always complimentary. However, in the comics and graphic novels world positives definitely apply. And taking a look at the current Angelenos behind Meltdown University, Uncanny X-Force, and A Wrinkle in Time illustrates who’s coming to L.A. and what they’re making here.
On Tuesday, April 2nd, join The Crawford Family Forum at Hollywood’s NerdMelt Showroom for “Comics, DIY, and the L.A. Effect.” KPCC’s Mike Roe and guest panelists will discuss what place DIY has taken in the comics industry and their own careers, how living in a city with such social, cultural, and even geographical quirks has affected their work; and where they see the L.A. comics/graphic novels scene going in the future.
Guests:
Sam Humphries is a comic book writer living in Los Angeles. His work includes Uncanny X-Force and The Ultimates (Marvel Comics), and the self-published Sacrifice and Our Love Is Real.
Hope Larson is a cartoonist and comics writer who got her start making mini-comics and selling them at conventions, and posting comics online. Her first graphic novels include Salamander Dream, A Wrinkle in Time, and Who Is AC? (forthcoming).
Jim Higgins is Meltdown University’s founding director/principal instructor, a CalArts and Otis College of Art and Design instructor, and editor/publisher of New Thing (an international short comic stories anthology). He was a DC Comics editor, and worked on the graphic novels A History of Violence, Road to Perdition, and Stuck Rubber Baby.
Moderator:
Mike Roe, KPCC’s pop culture blogger for “Without A Net,” is our resident comics (and comedy) aficionado. He also hosts the Geek Pilgrims podcast and spends most of his free time either performing improv or tweeting.
7:30pm – Doors Open
8:00pm – Program
Admission is FREE, but RSVPs are required.
