00000000-Rosalie-LightningTOM HART, graphic novelist and author of the gorgeous memoir ROSALIE LIGHTNING, signs at Inkwood Books on Sunday, April 10, 2016 from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

About Rosalie Lightning:
ROSALIE LIGHTNING is Eisner-nominated cartoonist Tom Hart’s #1 New York Times bestselling touching and beautiful graphic memoir about the untimely death of his young daughter, Rosalie. His heart-breaking and emotional illustrations strike readers to the core, and take them along his family’s journey through loss. Hart uses the graphic form to articulate his and his wife’s on-going search for meaning in the aftermath of Rosalie’s death, exploring themes of grief, hopelessness, rebirth, and eventually finding hope again. Hart creatively portrays the solace he discovers in nature, philosophy, great works of literature, and art across all mediums in this expressively honest and loving tribute to his baby girl. Rosalie Lighting is a graphic masterpiece chronicling a father’s undying love.

CAROL TYLER
Tyler will be reading from her masterpiece Soldier’s Heart.

SOLDIER’S HEART: The Campaign to Understand My WWII Veteran Father, A Daughter’s Story is a sophisticated graphic masterpiece by Carol Tyler. Soldier’s Heart explores the damaging effects of war and the toll it can take on families.

Many soldiers return home and never talk about what happened – especially those from the Greatest Generation. Thus was the case with S/Sgt. Charles W. Tyler, who late in life began to open up to his daughter Carol. By looking at him, you would never know that he was wounded in combat, but as she states at the beginning: “Not all scars are visible.”

The narrative unfolds over 360 pages of masterfully crafted drawings. Stunning ink and color washes weave through the decades: Tyler examines the past in sepia, confronts reality in stark black & white and uses rich color to convey the moods and fragility of the present. She overlays her father’s memories with her own, while struggling to understand her troubled life: a failed marriage, a teenage daughter on the edge, and an elderly father and mother. It’s literate, emotionally compelling, historically accurate, and took the artist a decade to complete. Winner of the Ohio Arts Council Excellence Award, nominated for 11 Eisners, 2 Harveys, 2 Ignatz awards, and named a finalist LA Times Book Prize, Soldier’s Heart is a magnificent achievement.
