Comments Off on Long Beach Comic Con 2013 Con Report!
On November 23-24th, 2013, the Long Beach Convention Center was home to the 5th annual Long Beach Comic and Horror Con! Usually held around Halloween, this show was pushed back to late November, making this one of the final comic cons of 2013! In addition to the date change, they also got rid of the Friday evening show and I believe it was the right call. Saturday was booming, with lines going out the door and a steady flow of patrons all day long! Sunday slowed down quite a bit and while still a lot of foot traffic, not enough spending.
With the usual talent of comic creators attending Long Beach, including mainstays of LBCC Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, Whilce Portacio, Tim Bradstreet, and Todd Nauck, joined by special guests Gene Ha, Carlos D’Anda, Marc Silvestri, Mark Texeira, Art Thibert, Andrew Robinson, Mark Waid, and several other awesome comic talent, LBCC did close out the 2013 con year nicely.
While Comic Cons seem to be growing every year, it seems harder and harder for each show to bring something new. I did love the fact that there was an awesome car display in the front of some of the most famous cars in pop culture, along with a lot of retailers in prominent display at the show. One thing also appreciated was that comics were far more emphasized than pop culture stars, and that’s one thing I always do appreciate at LBCC. Hopefully next year, they’ll bring over the bigger hitters in comics to really close the year with a bang. Star power does draw more crowds, and I for one would love to see LBCC thrive and succeed for the next 5 years and beyond. And now, onto some photos!
A line forms inside the convention hall on Saturday morning.
Artist Alley is bustling in the morning.
An awesome array of pop culture cars. But it’s not complete without…

And now, onto some cosplayers!
A new meaning to the term robot chicken.

Why so serious?
Black Cat crosses your path!
I asked why they were at LBCC, but they said I needed level 7 clearance.

This kid is making me go crazy!
I am worthy of Mjolnir!
Kid cosplayers are so darned cute!
Pull my finger.

Comments Off on CA – The Walking Dead 100 Exhibit
Sina Grace, Todd Nauck, and Jason Reeves appear at the Gusford Gallery on Friday May 31, 2013 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM!
Robert Kirkman’s Eisner Award-winning comic book series, The Walking Dead, celebrated its 100th issue last July and the issue became the top-selling comic book of 2012. Last year, Skybound and The Hero Initiative gave the comic industry’s leading artists and visionaries over 100 blank covered issues of The Walking Dead #100 to create a set of remarkable artwork originals to commemorate this special issue of the groundbreaking Skybound/Image Comics series. Regular The Walking Dead series artist Charlie Adlard is among the contributors and now, for the first and last time ever, all 106 of the original sketch covers will be on display together — but for one night only. All of the artists came together to benefit The Hero Initiative, the comic book industry’s non-profit corporation helping comic creators in need. While The Walking Dead continues to break records in every form of media, it all started with the comic book and that will be celebrated at this special gallery show and auction.
To enhance the experience for attendees, The Walking Dead #100 original sketch cover artists Sina Grace (Not My Bag), Todd Nauck (Invincible Universe), and Jason Reeves (F-OO Fighters) will be in attendance to answer questions about their covers.
On Friday, May 31 at GUSFORD | los angeles from 6:00 – 9:00 PM, 7016 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, all comic fans are welcome to witness history in the making and in some cases, take a piece of it home. In addition to the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing all The Walking Dead #100 original sketch covers together for the first time ever, four covers will also be auctioned to benefit the industry’s favorite charity at the same time. Two covers will be auctioned via eBay during the course of the event, and attendees can bid via their own mobile devices. Another cover will be auctioned live, on-site for attendees. And in an unprecedented move, a fourth cover will be created live that night by artist Todd Nauck for auction during the event. All attendees at the GUSFORD event can watch Nauck, a comic master, live at work during the event as he creates the final and 106th original sketch cover.
The remainder of the covers will be auctioned off via eBay starting June 4.
Amazingly enough, there is no cost to attend this comic lover’s dream event. It’s free and open to the public but if you feel like more celebrating, there will also be a cash bar in place and zombie-styled treats courtesy of event collaborator and neighboring shop, Golden Apple Comics. We want you to save your money to bid on the covers instead of an entrance fee. The event is a gift from GUSFORD | los angeles and Skybound to benefit The Hero Initiative and the fine work they do as the first-ever federally chartered non-profit corporation dedicated to helping comic legends in need and providing a safety net for them.
For information on the event and auction, please visit www.heroinitiative.org or call 626/676-6354. You can always find information for everything related to The Walking Dead at www.Skybound.com and www.TheWalkingDead.com

Lay, Snyder, Wheaton and Even More Guests Flock to WonderCon
WonderCon in Anaheim features increasingly stellar lineup
Anaheim, CA – WonderCon, part of Comic-Con International’s (CCI) family of nonprofit comics conventions, announced the latest additions to a guest list that already has fans buying passes at an unprecedented pace for the three-day celebration of comics and related popular art forms. The additions include fan favorites cartoonist Carol Lay (WayLay, The Simpsons), award-winning writer Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Swamp Thing), and actor/author Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory). WonderCon will be held March 16-18, 2012.
Passes and hotel accommodations for WonderCon became available on www.comic-con.org/wc/ in December. The event, traditionally held in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1987, relocated the Anaheim Convention Center for 2012 due to renovations at the usual venue. Organizers for the event are pleased to offer southern Californian fans a chance to attend WonderCon who otherwise may not have been able to make the trek to San Francisco. Fans from Orange County and the Los Angeles area have expressed delight in having an event akin to San Diego Comic-Con at their doorstep.
WonderCon’s format resembles the world-renowned Comic-Con albeit on a reduced scale. The 2011 WonderCon welcomed nearly 50,000 attendees, which is less than half of the 130,000 who attended the 2011 San Diego show.
Joining Lay, Snyder, and Wheaton among the newly announced special guests are Renae De Liz (artist/editor, Womanthology, The Last Unicorn), Rebekah Isaacs (artist, Angel & Faith, Magus), Todd Nauck (artist, Amazing Spider-Man, Young Justice), Humberto Ramos (artist, Amazing Spider-Man, Impulse, Crimson), and Ryan Sook (artist, The Spectre; cover artist, Justice League Dark, DCU Presents). For a complete list and bios of the previously announced special guests, who include award-winning comics writers and artists as well as novelists and screenwriters, visit www.comic-con.org/wc/wc_
“The guest list just keeps getting more impressive,” said David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for WonderCon and parent company, Comic-Con International. “That, along with rapid badge sales, indicates WonderCon will be just as exciting, if not more so, than the 2011 blockbuster show.”
WonderCon, one of the country’s best comics and popular arts conventions, is part of Comic-Con International (CCI), a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms. The organization achieves its mission primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. In addition to WonderCon each spring, CCI organizes San Diego Comic-Con each summer (the world’s largest comics convention of its kind) and San Francisco’s Alternative Press Expo (APE) each fall.
