NYC – LGBTQ Representation in Comics Panel

Phil Jimenez, Jennifer Camper, Ramzi Fawaz, and Margaret Galvan appear at Strand Book Store on Wednesday, March 22nd at 7:00 PM.

Press Release:

Join a panel of brilliant artists, writers, and academics for a discussion of the changing landscape of comics, including the influence of LGBTQ creators in the medium and the increasing interest in queer comics scholarship. From the radical imaginations that posited new identities and alliances across difference in mainstream superhero comics like The X-Men and The New Mutants, to the underground comix gurus who printed zines that shaped a generation of punks and pioneers, we’ll trace the intersections of LGBTQ culture, queer theory and comics history. Along the way, we’ll consider the creative evolution and outlooks of LGBTQ comics creators themselves. Panelists Ramzi Fawaz (Assistant Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison), Phil Jimenez (pioneering artist and writer at DC Comics), Margaret Galvan (scholar of contemporary women’s visual print culture) and Jennifer Camper (cartoonist and founding director of the biennial Queers & Comics Conference) will dive into all this and more for a high-flying and energetic discussion of comics’ queer history and the future of the medium.

Ramzi Fawaz is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in queer theory, American cultural studies, and contemporary literature. He recieved his Ph.D. in American Studies at George Washington University. His first book The New Mutants: Superheros and the Radical Imagination of American Comics (NYU Press, 2016) recieved the 2012 Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies Fellowship Award for Best First Book Manuscript in LGBT Studies. His writing has been published in a number of academic journals including American Literature, Calalloo, and GLQ. Along with Damon Young (UC Berkeley), he is a co-organizer of the Sexual Politics/Sexual Poetics Collective (SPSP), a working group of early career queer studies scholars developing new directions in the field. He is also currently co-editing a special issue of American Literature with Darieck Scott titled “Queer About Comics,” which will be the first issue the journal has ever dedicated to the comics medium since its inception in 1929.

Margaret Galvan is a scholar of contemporary women’s visual print culture at work on In Visible Archives of the 1980s: Feminist Politics and Queer Platforms, a book and digital project under contract with the University of Minnesota Press‘s Manifold Scholarship Series. This project traces a genealogy of queer theory in 1980s American feminism through representations of sexuality in visual culture. Margaret’s research spans over a dozen archives where she analyzes comics, captioned photographs, drawings, transparencies, and other image-text media produced by women, including Gloria Anzaldúa, Alison Bechdel, Nan Goldin, Roberta Gregory, and Lee Marrs. She has received nine grants over five years to fund this work, most recently including grants from Duke University and Smith College. She has also recently received an award from NYCDH to develop a digital humanities project out of a portion of her archival research. For this project, she is creating digital networks and maps of Alison Bechdel’s participation in 1980s grassroots periodicals.

Jennifer Camper is a cartoonist and graphic artist. Her books include “Rude Girls and Dangerous Women” and “subGURLZ”, and she edited two “Juicy Mother” comics anthologies. Her work appears in numerous publications, comic books, and anthologies, and has been exhibited internationally. She is the founding director of the biennial Queers & Comics Conference.

Phil Jimenez is a comic book artist and writer, known for his work as writer/artist on Wonder Woman, as a penciler of the miniseries Infinite Crisis, and for his collaborations with writer Grant Morrison on New X-Men and The Invisibles.

UK – Miracleman/The Discipline Signing

000000-MiraclemanMark Buckingham and Peter Milligan at Forbidden Planet on Wednesday, 2nd March, 2016 at 6:00 PM!

Press Release:

Join MARK BUCKINGHAM signing MIRACLEMAN VOL. 1 THE GOLDEN AGE and PETER MILLIGAN signing SOONER OR LATER and THE DISCIPLINE #1 at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Wednesday 2nd March from from 6 – 7pm!

Atop Olympus, Mark Buckingham’s MIRACLEMAN presides over a brave new world forged from London’s destruction. It is a world free of war, of famine, of poverty. A world of countless wonders. A world where pilgrims scale Olympus’s peak to petition their living god while, miles below, the dead return in fantastic android bodies. It is an Age of Miracles — but is humankind ready for it? Do we even want it? Is there a place for humanity in a world of gods? Gaiman and Buckingham delve into the lives of lonely idealists, rebellious schoolchildren and fracturing families, exploring the human constant in a changing world of gods and miracles.

000000-DisciplineIn Peter Milligan’s SOONER OR LATER, we find ourselves in Thatcher’s Britain – and Micky Swift is still on the dole. Disillusioned with his dour existence in dreary Camden, Micky’s life is suddenly turned inside out when he is plucked dragged into the 30th century as the property of one Mr & Mrs Katsbreath – a case of mistaken identity. Unwanted, trapped in the future and still unemployable, if Micky wants to return home (time travel isn’t cheap you know!), he will need to find a job!

And in DISCIPLINE #1, Melissa fall in lust with a stranger who’s an awful lot more than he seems. What appears to be a simple seduction is revealed as something much darker and more dangerous. This controversial and erotically-charged tale of sex, death, and metamorphosis begins with an explosion of carnality and weirdness.
