THOMAS JANE AND BERKELEY BREATHED TO MAKE APPEARANCES AT LONG BEACH COMIC CON
Jane Hosting Premiere Screening Of His Latest Film “Give ‘Em Hell Malone”
Bloom County Creator, Berkeley Breathed Making First Ever Convention Guest Appearance
Baltimore, MD September 8, 2009 – Long Beach Comic Con is proud to announce two special additions to its already formidable lineup of stars making appearances, Thomas Jane, the lead actor on HBO’s latest hit Hung as well as the star of The Punisher and Berkeley Breathed, the legendary creator of Bloom County, one of the most popular comic strip series of all time. The inaugural Long Beach Comic Con is October 2-4 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.
Jane will host the premiere screening of his latest film Give’Em Hell Malone, an action flick starring co-starring Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible, Surrogates, Pulp Fiction). The feature is the story of a tough as nails private eye squaring off against the mob. Breathed, making his first ever convention appearance as a convention guest, will be introducing The Bloom County Library Volume One, the first chronological collection of the first two years of Bloom County comic strips in their entirety. Breathed will be hosting a discussion of Bloom County and signing copies of the book on Saturday only.
In addition to the Give‘Em Hell Malone premiere, Jane and his Raw Entertainment partner, Tim Bradstreet, will be on hand to promote their new comic properties Bad Planet and Alien Pig Farm. Bad Planet, a twelve issue mini-series that ended it’s first arc late last year, tells the story of a mysterious freighter that crashes to earth, unleashing horrible creeping alien spiders, and unlocking a hideous intergalactic secret. The first six issues have been collected as a limited edition black and white hard cover, available exclusively through LBCC. Alien Pig Farm, a completed four issue mini-series, set in Horton County, Kentucky, is about moonshine running brothers Johnny, Ray, and Elvis who run afoul of the law and encounter a spaceship full of pig eating aliens. The Trade Paper Back will also be exclusive to the Con at this time.
In making his first ever comic convention guest appearance, Breathed will be supporting IDW Publishing’s release of the first archival collection of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Bloom County. The Bloom County Library Volume One contains a series of “Context Pages” sprinkled throughout the volumes, providing perspective for the reader and presenting a variety of real-life events and personalities that were contemporary at the time of original publication. Breathed has also added his own commentary at points throughout the book.
Bloom County is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed newspaper strips of modern times. Created by Breathed, the strip premiered on December 8th, 1980 and featured the beloved and quirky denizens of Bloom County including Opus, Steve Dallas, Bill the Cat, Milo Bloom, Michael Binkley, and Cutter John. The strip was published in over 1,200 newspapers. The street date for the book is October 6, however, convention attendees will get chance to own it before anyone else.
“When we envisioned our inaugural Long Beach Comic Convention we saw an event that was going to be a crowd pleasing event for fans of all things pop culture. With Thomas Jane and an iconic creator like Berkeley Breathed, we continue to build on our vision for the show,” said event planner Martha Donato, President of MAD Event Management. “Having these popular, talented artists at our show, lets fans know that Long Beach Comic Con is here to stay.”
