**UPDATE: Dave Gibbons will not be able to take part in this year’s event.**
The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the next group of confirmed guest for the 2013 show, taking place the weekend of September 7-8, 2013. Mark Buckingham, Dave Gibbons, Adam Hughes, Paul Levitz, George Perez, Walter Simonson, Louise Simonson, and Allison Sohn will all be attending our 14th Annual show !
Mark Buckingham, who is best-known and most-celebrated for his work on the long-running Vertigo title Fables, began his career in 1990 working with Neil Gaiman on Miracleman from Eclipse Comics. Working on such titles as 2000 AD, Hellblazer, and Shade, the Changing Man, he became a mainstay at DC Comics after taking over art duties on Fables with issue #6. His run on the popular imprint title has earned him four Eisner Awards, including Best New Series in 2003, Best Serialized Story in 2005 and 2006, and Best Artist/Penciler/Inker in 2007.
Legendary artist Dave Gibbons is best known for his collaboration with Alan Moore on the seminal mini-series,Watchmen. With a career that spans more than four decades, Gibbons has provided artowrk for 2000 AD, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Dark Horse Comics, and has worked with such characters as Judge Dredd, Captain America, Superman and Batman. He is currently working on The Secret Service with Mark Millar though Marvel’s Icon imprint.
As far as cover artists working in comics today, Adam Hughes is among the very best. A 12-year veteran of Gaijin Studios, Hughes is most widely recognized for his pin-up style renditions of female characters, especially over the course of his long runs as cover artist on Wonder Woman and Catwoman. His most recent work includes the Before Watchmen mini-series, Dr. Manhattan. Hughes won the Harvey Award for Best Cover Artist in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
Paul Levitz has been a mainstay at DCComics since 1972, serving as a writer, editor, and President (2002 – 2009) over the tenure of his career. His name is synonymous with the Legion of Super-Heroes, which he wrote from 1977-1979 and 1981-1989, and he created such notable characters as the Stalker, the Earth-2 Huntress, and Lucien the Librarian. Levitz has since returned to writing the Legion of Super-Heroes for the New 52, as well as the Earth-2 centric book, World’s Finest.
Writer/artist George Perez established himself as a fan-favorite creator during his lengthy runs on Marvel Comics’ Avengers, and DC Comics’ Teen Titans and Wonder Woman. Over the course of his 40-year career, Perez has drawn nearly every character in both the Marvel and DC Universes, and has worked on such ground breaking events as the Infinity Gauntlet, JLA/Avengers, and Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds. In 2011, he reunited with long-time collaborator Marv Wolfman to publish the long-awaited New Teen Titans: Games graphic novel. Currently, he is working as the artist for DC’s World’s Finest with Paul Levitz.
Walter Simonson is best known for his run on The Mighty Thor throughout the 1980s. His classic run was recently collected by Marvel in The Mighty Thor Omnibus by Walter Simonson, a massive tome which featured issues #337-355, #357-369, and #371-382, as well as the mini-series, Balder the Brave #1-4. In addition to his work on Thor, Simonson has worked on such titles as Detective Comics, Avengers, and Marvel’s Star Wars comics. In 2010, Simonson received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented at the Harvey Awards.
Louise Simonson began her career in as an editor in 1974 before moving on to writing for Marvel Comics in 1984. She is best known for her work on Power Pack, X-Factor, New Mutants, and Superman: The Man of Steel. In addition to comics, Simonson is an accomplished novelist, having published 14 books between 1993 and 2009.
Sketch card artist Allison Sohn’s work has been showcased in several trading card sets, including: Star Wars Galaxy Series 4 and 5 and the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection; Women of Marvel; Indiana Jones Heritage; Lord of the Rings Masterpieces, Series 1 and 2; and the Red Sonja 35th Anniversary. In addition, she provided the exclusive artwork for both Star Wars Celebration IV and V. In 2011, Sohn was the feature of a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con International called Comic-Con How-To: Sketching with Allison Sohn, in which she demonstrated her craft using Copic markers.
“We are so excited to able to announce these great guests for next year’s show,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “It’s not even 2013 yet, and with Mark, Dave, Adam, Paul, George, Walter, Louise, and Allison joining the list of guests, the level of top-tier talent for the show is just getting better and better!”

Walter Simonson, Louise Simonson, Bob Wiacek, Chris Sotomayor, John Workman, and Danny Fingeroth appear at the Society of Illustrators on Saturday, January 28th, 2012.
Comic books (and their cousins, graphic novels) are something we’re all familiar with from childhood on. But if you’re not involved in making them, how they come to be can seem a little mysterious and intimidating. Now, the curtain is pulled back as comics editor and writer DANNY FINGEROTH, in collaboration with THE SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS presents:
COMICS OUT LOUD
In a manner similar to the Society’s acclaimed ART OUT LOUD events, COMICS OUT LOUD will feature top comic book creators—one from each discipline of the medium—demonstrating and discussing their work processes as attendees circulate around the room and watch the process of “sequential art” (as the great Will Eisner dubbed it) being made.
You’ll get to watch writer LOUISE SIMONSON, penciler WALT SIMONSON, inker BOB WIACEK, colorist CHRIS SOTOMAYOR, and letterer JOHN WORKMAN as they ply their crafts. Each creator will be working on a current assignment, so that attendees will get a sense of how team-created comics come to be. Event organizer, and longtime comics editor, DANNY FINGEROTH, will be on hand to discuss and demonstrate the role of the editor in the comic book making process.
COMICS OUT LOUD will be a rare opportunity to see top creators doing—and speaking about—their work. You will have the chance to find out everything you always wanted to know about making comics, but were afraid—or didn’t even know—to ask!
$50 non-members, $40 members, $20 students
Food will be available for an additional $5.
Purchase tickets here!
ABOUT THE CREATORS:
LOUISE SIMONSON [writer] has written and edited comic books for many years, including those in the superhero, science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres. Her Marvel work includes the award-winning Power Pack; best selling X-Factor and New Mutants; Wolverine: Meltdown, co-written with her husband, Walter ; and Web of Spider-Man. Her DC Comics work includes Superman: Man of Steel, featuring the Death and Return of Superman storylines; Steel; and World of Warcraft. She has also written 23 books for kids and adults. She is currently writing a Young Adult dark urban fantasy novel and a Rocketeer story for IDW.
WALT SIMONSON [penciler] is a triple-threat talent, lauded for his work as writer, penciler, and inker. His first professional artwork appeared in 1973 in DC’s Weird War Tales. He gained prominence with his collaboration with Archie Goodwin on the Manhunter feature, and from there went on to many triumphs, including landmark runs on The Mighty Thor, The Fantastic Four (both of which he wrote, penciled and inked), and Michael Moorcock’s Elric.
BOB WIACEK [inker], one of the industry’s top embellishers, has inked over such pencilers as Carmine Infantino on Star Wars, John Romita Jr. on The Uncanny X-Men, June Brigman on Power Pack, John Byrne on Sensational She-Hulk, Walter Simonson on X-Factor, and George Pérez on The Brave and the Bold, volume 2.
CHRIS SOTOMAYOR [colorist] has the reputation of being one of the best—and fastest—color artists in the comics business, and has been a mainstay at Marvel Comics since 1996. He’s proven himself time and again, having worked on their top properties, including Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil, Captain America, Hulk, and many others, as well as working on titles for DC, Image and Humanoids.
JOHN WORKMAN [letterer] was born in the mid-twentieth century. He discovered comics at an early age and was struck by the uniqueness of the medium. His plans to be a lawyer flew out the window, and he began to experiment with all the elements that make up the creation of comics stories. His favorite time spent in comics over the last 44 years was the period (1977-1984) during which he was the Art Director for Heavy Metal magazine. He edited, wrote, penciled, inked, colored, lettered, and handled production on thousands of comics pages, all the time attempting to boost sales of the publication and to present comics material to a large worldwide audience. In the years since the HM days, he has become known primarily for his lettering, though he continues to do everything else that it takes to come up with a comics story.
DANNY FINGEROTH [curator] is Sr. VP of Education at SoHo’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA), where he co-curated exhibitions of the work of Al Jaffee and Will Eisner. He was Group Editor of Marvel’s Spider-Man line and has written many comics featuring Spider-Man and other icons. He is co-author of How to Create Comics from Script to Print; author of Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society; and co-editor of the recent The Stan Lee Universe, a compendium of rarities from and about the co-creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and so many others, published by TwoMorrows.

Walter Simonson, legendary comics writer and artist of an overwhelmingly impressive catalog of books, appears at the IDW booth every day during the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, signing copies of WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION. In addition to the regular edition available in July at comic stores, IDW will offer a limited Comic-Con exclusive edition featuring a variant cover, only available through IDW at the convention. Readers can now pre-order both editions direct from IDW Publishing for pick up at Comic-Con. “I wrote and drew The Mighty Thor for Marvel more 25 years ago now, at a time when it was the fate of old comics to be deployed to the back issue bins in comic shops and at conventions. No one had any expectations of reprints or trade collections. Now, it’s a new day,” said Simonson. “I’m pleased that IDW and Marvel have seen fit to go back and revisit this work as they have. I couldn’t be more delighted to know Thor, Beta Ray Bill, and all their friends turned out to have a much longer shelf-life than I would ever have imagined.”
An oversized, hardcover collection, WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will present Thor 337-340, Simonson’s first classic story arc, which introduced Beta Ray Bill, and Thor 360-362, Simonson’s choice for the second arc in the book. All the pages in the ARTIST’S EDITION have been scanned from Simonson’s personal original art to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.
“Walter’s run on The Mighty Thor is one of the best ever in comics—period,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “and to be able to see it now as an Artist’s Edition, printed the same size as drawn, and scanned from all the originals… well, I just can’t wait to get my paws on it!”
This will be Simonson’s first visit to San Diego Comic-Con since 2004. Joining Simonson will be his wife, Louise “Weezie” Simonson, a noted comic book editor and writer. WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will be the first in a series of Artist’s Editions featuring legendary creators and comics from Marvel.
