UT – The Stone Heart Signing

Join Faith Erin Hicks (Adventures of Super-hero Girl, Friends with Boys) and Shannon Hale (Princess Academy, Books of Bayern) on Friday, April 7th at 7:00 PM for a discussion about Faith’s new graphic novel, The Stone Heart, book two in her Nameless City series.

Kaidu and Rat have only just recovered from the assassination attempt on the General of All Blades when more chaos breaks loose in the Nameless City: deep conflicts within the Dao nation are making it impossible to find a political solution for the disputed territory of the City itself.

To complicate things further, Kaidu is fairly certain he’s stumbled on a formula for the lost weapon of the mysterious founders of the City. . . . But sharing it with the Dao military would be a complete betrayal of his friendship with Rat. Can Kai find the right solution before the Dao find themselves at war?

Places in the signing line are reserved for those who purchase a copy of The Stone Heart from The King’s English.

000000000000000-mice2016

Press Release:

MICE is back! On October 29th and 30th independent graphic novelists and cartoonists will converge on University Hall at 1815 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge’s Porter Square. The event is free, family friendly, and offers a weekend of activities as the Boston area’s only show dedicated to independent and alternative comics.

MICE attendees are invited to discover their new favorite comic books from over 150 local comic creators. The exhibition area at MICE will present a wide range of art and books: hand-made mini-comics and zines, anthologies, graphic novels, art prints, and sketches. Panel discussions will provide insightful conversations about the world of contemporary comics and graphic novels. Artists will share techniques, tips, and tricks for creating your own comics in a variety of workshops for all ages and skill levels. Sunday’s “Kids Comics Day” workshops are especially geared toward younger readers and budding cartoonists.

000000000000000-faith-erin-hicksMICE has announced its first guest creator: FAITH ERIN HICKS! Faith is a prolific Canadian cartoonist who started making comics “for fun” in 1999 with her webcomic Demonology 101. The first book in her new fantasy graphic novel trilogy The Nameless City was published by First Second Books earlier this year. Faith was initially inspired to create comics by the real world situations and identifiable characters of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although she majored in animation, Faith loves comics because she can do all aspects of the production. She has a great enthusiasm for manga, which inspires the action scenes she draws.

Since her start Faith has created an large collection of graphic novels both as a sole creator and collaborating illustrator, including Zombies Calling, The War at Ellsmere, Brain Camp, Friends with Boys, and Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong. The Adventures of Superhero Girl won her an Eisner Award in 2014 for Best Publication for Kids. Currently she is working on the second book from The Nameless City series along with an original prose novel for Roaring Books called Comics Will Break Your Heart.

MICE will be held at Lesley University’s University Hall at 1815 Massachusetts Avenue in Porter Square. The hours of the show are Saturday, October 29th, 10 am – 6 pm, and Sunday, October 30th, 11 am – 5 pm. Admission is free. Details at the website: www.micexpo.org

DC – The Nameless City Signing

Cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks appears at Politics & Prose on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 10:30 AM!

In Hicks’s latest graphic novel, a sprawling metropolis is known only as The Nameless City to its denizens; its advantageous position in the only passage between the mountains and the ocean has subjected it to countless invasions over the years, and its name has changed with each one. Rat, an orphaned street child who has only known life within The Nameless City’s limits, is predisposed to hate Kaidu, a member of the Dao, the most recent people to rule the City. It turns out, however, that Kaidu is nothing like the other Dao who have come to the City for military training; preferring books to guns, he is almost as out of place among his own people as Rat herself is. As an unlikely friendship forms between them, they begin to envision a future in which their two worlds come together in a single, peaceful civilization.

Faith Erin Hicks is a writer and artist in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her graphic novels include Zombies Calling, The War at Ellsmere, Brain Camp (with Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan), Friends with Boys, Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong (with Prudence Shen), the Bigfoot Boy series (with J. Torres), The Last of Us: American Dreams (with Neil Druckmann), the Eisner Award-winning The Adventures of Superhero Girl, and the Nameless City series.
