NYC – Flying Machines Signing

Press Release:

Join graphic novelists Alison Wilgus and Molly Brooks at the Astoria Bookshop Saturday June 3rd at 3:00 PM as they chat about and illustrate the famous flying machines designed by the Wright Brothers. Perfect for curious minds ages 8-12, learn about the first airplane models then try your hand at designing your own!

Flying Machines follows the Wright Brothers from their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, to the fields of North Carolina where they were to make their famous flights. In an era of dirigibles and hot air balloons, the Wright Brothers were among the first innovators of heavier than air flight. But in the hotly competitive international race toward flight, Orville and Wilbur were up against a lot more than bad weather. Mechanical failures, lack of information, and even other aviators complicated the Wright Brothers’ journey. Though they weren’t as wealthy as their European counterparts, their impressive achievements demanded attention on the international stage. Thanks to their carefully recorded experiments and a healthy dash of bravery, the Wright Brothers’ flying machines took off.

Called “inspirational reading for budding middle grade inventors and engineers” by the School Library Journal, Flying Machines is an original take on science for kids and makes for an event you do not want to miss!

Mandvi

Aasif Mandvi appears in conversation with Reza Aslan on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 7:30 pm! Reserve free tickets at the link…

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Presented as part of Book Soup at the Skirball, comedian Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) discusses his new memoir, No Land’s Man, with writer and scholar Reza Aslan.

If you’re an Indo-Muslim-British-American actor who has spent more time in bars than mosques over the past few decades, turns out it’s a little tough to explain who you are or where you are from. In No Land’s Man Mandvi explores this and other conundrums through humorous stories about his family, ambition, desire, and culture that range from dealing with his brunch-obsessed father to his high school career as a Michael Jackson impersonator to joining a Bible study group in order to seduce a nice Christian girl to improbably becoming America’s favorite Muslim/Indian/Arab/brown/doctor correspondent on The Daily Show.

Mandvi’s hilarious and passionate description of his journey will resonate with anyone who has had to navigate the murky space between lands. Or anyone who really loves brunch.

A book signing follows the program.
