David Petersen Keynotes Inaugural Ringo Awards, Tickets Available Now

August 24, 2017 by
Filed under Comic Books, Convention News, Maryland

Press Release:

The inaugural Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards will be presented on the evening of Saturday, September 23, 2017 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, the Baltimore Comic-Con. A limited number of tickets are now available for purchase by the public.

Ringo Awards tickets include a full cocktail hour (cash bar), a full service dinner (featuring a Baltimore crab cake), the awards ceremony, and a gift bag, and are now available for $125. Please visit our website to purchase with credit card: baltimorecomiccon.com/tickets

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is pleased to announce David Petersen as the inaugural Keynote Speaker. David Petersen is best known as the creator of Mouse Guard. He enjoys fantasy, folklore, myth, and legend. Even more than that, he loves to draw and write about it. A steady diet of cartoons, comics, and tree-climbing fed his imagination and is what still inspires his work today. David won the 2007 Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 2008, David won the Eisners for Best Publication for Kids (Mouse Guard Fall 1152 & Winter 1152) and Best Graphic Album – Reprint (Mouse Guard Fall 1152 Hardcover). He won the Harvey Award for Best Graphic Album of Previously Published Work in both 2014 and 2015.

David is a cartoonist and children’s book illustrator who began his career in 2004 with the release of Voices, a self-published anthology from ComiXpress. Possessing a distinctive art style reminiscent of A.A. Milne (creator of Winnie the Pooh), Petersen has worked on such comics as The Dark CrystalSnowy Valentine, and Muppets & Fairytales from Archaia, as well as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series from IDW. His artwork also graced the cover for the 2012 Baltimore Comic-Con program, as well as the show-exclusive t-shirt.

David and his wife Julia reside in Michigan with their 2 dogs, Bronwyn and Coco.

“David is the perfect guy to help us kick off the first annual Ringo Awards,” said Marc Nathan, Baltimore Comic-Con promoter. “He’s one of the brightest people you’ll meet, he’s amazingly creative, his artwork is gorgeous, and he writes Game of Thrones with mice! I’m really excited to hear what he has to say, and I think the room is going to love him.”

Voting on the 2017 Final Ballot was restricted to the comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally. As with the nomination process, comics pros came out in force to support the Ringo Awards and to register their votes. Don’t miss the presentation of final ballot winners, Fan-Only Favorites, Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement and Dick Giordano Humanitarian Awards, and the Mike Wieringo Spirit Award on the evening of Saturday, September 23rd, 2017!

SF – The Muppet Holidays with Dave Goelz

000_gonzo-dave-goelzMuppeteer Dave Goelz (The Great Gonzo) appears at the Walt Disney Family Museum on Monday, December 12, 2016.

Press Release:

In the spirit of holiday traditions, join us for a special screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol. In this highly-acclaimed film, The Muppets tell their delightfully charming version of the classic holiday tale written by 19th century novelist Charles Dickens. Following the screening, take part in a discussion with Dave Goelz, who starred in the film as Gonzo the Great performing as Charles Dickens.

The film will be screened at 6:30pm prior to the program. Admission to the film screening is included with the program ticket. Tickets available at the link…

About Dave Goelz
Dave Goelz has been a principal puppeteer with The Muppets for forty-three years. His characters include The Great Gonzo, Bunsen Honeydew, Zoot, Beauregard, and Waldorf from The Muppet Show; Boober Fraggle, Traveling Matt, and Philo the Rodentia from Fraggle Rock; Digit from The Jim Henson Hour; Rugby and Ditz from Jim Henson’s Secret Life of Toys; Stinky the Skunk from Jim Henson’s Animal Show with Stinky and Jake; and Randy the Stupid Pig and Gary Cahuenga the Vent Dummy from Muppets Tonight!

Goelz first started working for Henson Associates in 1973 as a puppet designer and builder and periodically had the opportunity to perform. The first highly-successful characters that he built were Animal, Zoot, and Floyd Pepper. Despite the fact that he had no formal training for puppeteering, he went on to perform as Zoot, the blue-haired saxophone player from The Muppet Show’s house band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. He eventually stopped building puppets and worked exclusively as a performer.

UK – Goblins! Signing

000Goblins

BRIAN FROUD signs GOBLINS! at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Thursday 3rd December from 6:00 – 7:00 PM!

The bestselling team of artist Brian Froud and scholar Ari Berk have continued their exploration of the goblin realm, with a new and noxious version of the world-famous Goblins. For the uninformed, goblins are those maleficent creatures who cause all manner of havoc in the human realm. Now, thanks largely to Froud’s and Berk’s continuing carelessness, the viscid and largely nonsensical NEW volume has been unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

Among its pages are new letters of apologies and disclaimers complete with new, never-before-seen goblin art; a list of Gargle’s new titles, grants, entitlements, and responsibilities; and, sadly, much more! Also included is an envelope containing a new talisman that is guaranteed to ward off goblins.

Brian Froud is an award-winning illustrator, author, and faery authority. With his wife, Wendy, he has written Brian Froud’s Faeries’ Tales and Trolls. He is also the author of The World of the Dark Crystal and The Goblins of Labyrinth. He lives in Devon, England.
