Art Spiegelman is the acclaimed author of the hugely-influential autobiographical graphic novel Maus, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1992. A majorly influential force in the history of comics, Mouly co-founded RAW magazine, and continues the task of defining visual literacy through her new children’s graphic novel imprint Toon Books.

Best known for his work Tekkon Kinkreet (adapted into an animated film of the same name) Matsumoto has had a stunning career and has a strong list of works available in English, French, and, of course, Japanese. Matsumoto will debut his new series Sunny at TCAF, published by Viz Media. Alison Bechdel is coming back to Toronto this weekend! Not seen since debuting her fantastic memoir Are You My Mother? (the follow-up to the critically acclaimed/best-seller Fun Home) at TCAF this spring! Alison Bechdel is coming back to our fair city to be part of the inaugural Elisabeth Young-Bruehl Memorial Syposium on Childism. Luckily, she also has time in her schedule to swing by our shop for a quick presentation and signing!
On Sunday, December 2nd, at 5:30pm, Alison Bechdel will be giving a presentation on her work, as well as hanging out for a bit after to sign some books and meet with fans. Seating will be limited. Bechdel’s TCAF event was delivered to a packed and delighted house, so next weekend is an evening to surely not be missed!
Originally announced as “At The Beguiling”, this event will be taking place one block south of The Beguiling, at 720 Bathurst Street. It is at The Centre for Social Innovation, in the ING Direct Presentation Space. This will give us much more room to welcome Toronto’s Bechdel fans!
About the Author: Alison Bechdel began keeping a journal at the age of ten, and has been assiduously archiving her own life and times with words and pictures ever since. For twenty-five years she wrote and drew the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, a generational chronicle considered “one of the preeminent oeuvres in the comics genre, period.” (Ms.) Fun Home is currently taught on several syllabi across North America, including several courses at The University of Toronto. Alison Bechdel’s other various accomplishments include comics drawn for Slate, McSweeney’s, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Book Review, and Granta, and she recently guest-edited McSweeney’s Best American Comics 2011. Bechdel lives near Burlington, Vermont.

Adrian Tomine, Charles Burns, and Chris Ware appear at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema on Monday, November 12th, 2012 at 8:30 pm.
Prepare to welcome three of the most respected graphic novel creators in the world, as Charles Burns (Black Hole), Adrian Tomine (Optic Nerve), and Chris Ware (Acme Novelty Library) visit Toronto this November to debut their new books. These three contemporaries and friends will each show an all-new audio/visual presentation based on their new works, both interacting with one another and the audience. This is the centerpiece autumn event to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of venerable Toronto comics and alternative culture shop The Beguiling, at the nearby newly renovated Bloor Hot Docs Cinema (506 Bloor St. W.) in the heart of the Annex neighborhood.
Sure to be the talk of the literary world this fall and winter, these three new releases blur the lines between ‘traditional’ graphic novels, illustration, and the publishing avant-garde!
Charles Burns’ stunning follow-up to 2010’s bestselling X’ed Out is The Hive. It takes readers further into the recesses of the diseased world of X’ed Out, shattering the boundaries between comics and the people who read them.
Adrian Tomine’s New York Drawings collects over a decade of the comics, illustrations, and covers produced by the artist for publishing institution The New Yorker, alongside a number of other rare and uncollected pieces in a lavish oversized hard cover.
Chris Ware’s Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth has been hailed as a modern literary masterpiece, and Building Stories is Ware’s first and much-anticipated graphic novel length follow-up. Ware experiments further with form and medium: the story is a literal box. Beautifully presented as variously formatted and sized comics, graphic novels, newspapers and pamphlets, the ensemble creates a fascinating and compelling portrait of a seemingly ordinary young woman, and the building where she lives.
All three of these compelling arguments for the necessary survival of the printed word will be on sale at The Beguiling in advance of this event, each on different release dates (see below).
Admission to the 25th anniversary event is $10, but admissions tickets are free (while supplies last) with every advance purchase of any of the above new books at The Beguiling.

Illustrator Tomi Ungerer signs at Little Island Comics on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 2:00pm.
Tomi Ungerer is perhaps the most famous children’s book author you have never heard of. Just over 50 years ago, Ungerer landed in New York City with only $60 in his pocket and a suitcase full of drawings. A brilliant illustrator, he became an overnight sensation. Ungerer went on to publish an astonishing 80 books in ten years, including beloved classics Moon Man, Otto, and The Three Robbers.
The Beguiling and Little Island Comics are honoured to host Tomi Ungerer for a special signing event at Little Island Comics on Saturday, September 8th, at 2pm in Little Island Comics’ event space. Ungerer will be signing copies of all of his work, including his work for adults, and a wide selection of books will be available for sale at the event.
The Three Robbers in particular remains one of our favourite children’s books carried at the store, and its darkly humourous message and brilliant and evocative illustrations have made it a classic for generations of parents and children since its original publication in 1962.
Tomi Ungerer is in Toronto as part of the promotional tour for the new film Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, a documentary about his life and work screening as part of TIFF. While this film is definitely intended for an adult audience, Ungerer’s work has a broad appeal and this signing is intended for readers of all ages.
ABOUT TOMI UNGERER
Tomi Ungerer (b.1931) was born in Strasbourg, in the Alsace region of France. He moved to New York City in 1956 and instantly found success as a caricaturist, illustrator, and children’s book author. As graphic artist he created advertising campaigns for Willy Brandt and The New York Times. In 1998 he was awarded the Hans Christian Anderson Award for Illustration, which is the Nobel Prize of the world of children’s literature. He now divides his time between Strasbourg and Ireland.
ABOUT FAR OUT ISN’T FAR ENOUGH: THE TOMI UNGERER STORY
“Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story” is a brilliant, original and highly engrossing feature-length documentary depicting the life and times of the best-selling children’s author and illustrator Tomi Ungerer. This French artist’s wild, lifelong adventure of testing societal boundaries through his use of subversive art and biting social satire is fully explored in this entertaining, 98-minute film which will have its North American premiere at TIFF 2012. While you may not be familiar with Ungerer or his work, you will quickly be entranced by the force of nature that is Tomi Ungerer.
