FL – Ukiyo Signings

Local artist and author Cary Polkovitz presents his new Graphic Novel UKIYO on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at TATE’S Lauderhill from 1:00 – 3:00 PM and TATE’S Boynton Beach: 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

The word UKIYO conjures images of the lives of Japanese courtesans and the nobility, a life of excess and luxury. Or it can mean “sorrowful world.” A “transitory world.” An implication of a separate, illusory reality. A staging place for the afterlife. Author and illustrator Cary Polkovitz’s UKIYO centers on an existence based on varying perceptions. Hallucinatory visuals tell a tale inspired by the rapidly advancing technologies of today’s social media and global economic interconnectivity. UKIYO is a study in non-linear storytelling, drugs, online personas, and obsession.

About the Author
Creator Cary Polkovitz cut his teeth as writer and penciler for NeoTek Iconography’s NAU Headhunter during his college years at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then went on to illustrate “Miss Adventure” and “Kodiak” for Men’s Adventure and Penthouse Comix through the mid 90s. Taking a break to teach art and become a well-known painter in South Florida’s “low-brow” art scene, and to have two volumes of his short stories published, Cary has since come back to his roots in the comic book industry.

chuckpRepresenting work that spans several years, Make Something Up is a compilation of 21 stories and one novella (some previously published, some not) that will disturb and delight. The absurdity of both life and death are on full display; in “Zombies,” the best and brightest of a high school prep school become tragically addicted to the latest drug craze: electric shocks from cardiac defibrillators. In “Knock, Knock,” a son hopes to tell one last off-color joke to a father in his final moments, while in “Tunnel of Love,” a massage therapist runs the curious practice of providing ‘relief’ to dying clients. And in “Expedition,” fans will be thrilled to find to see a side of Tyler Durden never seen before in a precusor story to Fight Club. Funny, caustic, bizarre, poignant; these stories represent everything readers have come to love and expect from Chuck Palahniuk.

About the Author:

CHUCK PALAHNIUK is the author of fourteen novels—Beautiful You, Doomed, Damned, Tell-All, Pygmy, Snuff, Rant, Haunted, Diary, Lullaby, Choke, Invisible Monsters, Survivor, and Fight Club—which all have sold more than five million copies in the United States. vdrArtist Vanesa Del Rey appears at Tate’s Comics on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 2pm-4pm to celebrate the release of Boom Studio’s new mini-series “The Empty Man” with an in-store signing!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Cullen Bunn (THE SIXTH GUN, VENOM) and Vanesa R. Del Rey (HIT) are two of the most exciting talents in the industry, and perfectly in sync on this haunting new crime procedural.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, “empty” state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.”
