NYC – Soonish Signing

Zach & Kelly Weinersmith appear at the Strand on Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 PM to sign SOONISH!

Press Release:

Technology is advancing more rapidly than ever before, and things once considered the stuff of science-fiction are now becoming more and more plausible. How soon can we expect space colonies? What will it take to get there? Will there be drawbacks?

Scientific researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith has partnered with cartoonist Zach Weinersmith to create Soonish, an intelligent and humorous preview of what lies on the horizon of scientific progress. Kelly and Zach tackle 10 up-and-coming fields of scientific study, dissect them, and analyze where all of these threads will lead. From fully automated robotic construction sites to celestial elevators, the Weinersmiths examine these concepts in great detail, showing how advancements develop, and pinpointing the elements that still impede us from making them a reality. Come for the theory, stay for the illustrations!

This event will be featured by CSPAN!

Admission Options: Buy a copy of Soonish or a $15 Strand gift card to attend. Please note that payment is required for all online event orders at the time of checkout. The event will be located in the Strand’s 3rd floor Rare Book Room at our store at 828 Broadway at 12th Street.

Katie Skelly appears alongside Gary Panter in conversation with Nicole Rudick at Strand Book Store on Thursday, July 27th at 7:00 PM.

Press Release:

Celebrate the release of Brooklyn’s own Katie Skelly’s brand-new comic, My Pretty Vampire, with a conversation about influence and its aftermath.

Clover the vampire yearns for the days before she became a creature of the night. She misses excitement, adventure, and the occasional stroll in the sun. Her brother, Marcel, forces her to be a shut-in, claiming that it is to keep her safe from those who would harm her in the outside world. However, just because Clover lacks a soul, doesn’t mean she’s lost her innate curiosity. After she plots her escape, she hopes to have a wild, marvelous and sensual journey befitting of adventurous nature.

Katie will be joined in conversation by fellow cartoonist Gary Panter, whose new book, Songy of Paradise, is a wild and wooly “cover” of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, starring a hillbilly on a vision quest. They’ll discuss growing into and out of your biggest influence with the Paris Review’s Nicole Rudick.

joe-hill-brattle-theatre-49

JOE HILL (Locke & Key, Horns) appears at the Strand on Wednesday, May 18th at 7:00 PM!

Press Release:

Joe Hill, award-winning author of NOS4A2, Horns, and other chilling bestsellers, returns with The Fireman, a gripping tale of a plague unlike anything we’ve seen before.

No one knows where it came from, but Dragonscale spreads like wildfire, tracing its victims’ flesh with blackened gold, then setting them ablaze. Harper Grayson, a dedicated nurse, discovers its mark on her own skin and resolves to stay alive long enough to give birth to her son, endangering her husband and everyone around them. As society collapses around them, the ranks close around her as angry Cremation Squads rove the streets, exterminating the afflicted.

A mysterious and compelling stranger Harper met at the hospital, a man in a dirty yellow fire fighter’s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he strolls the ruins of New Hampshire, a madman afflicted with Dragonscale who has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted . . . and as a weapon to avenge the wronged.

Don’t miss this evening with a modern master as Joe Hill presents his latest white-hot tale of perseverance in the face of a civilization in flames.

NYC – Megg & Mogg Signing

00000000_Megg-Mogg-nyc

Cartoonists Simon Hanselmann and Katie Skelly appear at the Strand Book Store on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 7 PM – 10 PM!

Press Release:

Simon Hanselmann’s comics don’t spare the bawdy, broke, bad-tempered extremes of its Saturday-morning cartoon characters. Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam takes the titular weed-addled witch and her feline partner out of the suburban home they’ve made in his previous work in Megahex, at VICE, and in mini-comics aplenty, all the way to the stoner capital of Europe. Taking the gang out of their familiar down-under backwater doesn’t lift them from their singular miasma of bleak moods, dire hijinx, and unclear boundaries–join Simon at Strand for a wild night of the same.

Joining Simon in conversation will be fellow cartoonist Katie Skelly, Brooklynite creator of Nurse Nurse, Operation Margarine, the ongoing My Pretty Vampire, as well as comics for the sex-positive website Slutist. She’s also written and lectured about comics for outlets such as The Comics Journal, Fantagraphics, Japan Society, The Center for Cartoon Studies, Fordham University and The New School, and co-hosts the Trash Twins podcast with fellow cartoonist Sarah Horrocks.
