Press Release:

Isotope proudly presents award-winning cartoonist Sonny Liew visiting us for the first time all the way from Singapore on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 7:00 PM!

We’re massive fans of Sonny’s gorgeous work, and love his creative team-ups with Gene Yang on THE SHADOW HERO, with Paul Levitz on DOCTOR FATE, with Mike Carey on MY FAITH IN FRANKIE, with Tommy Kovac on WONDERLAND, on the fantastic series of FLIGHT anthologies, and especially his solo MALINKY ROBOT and… the book that we think will be dominating the Best of the Year lists for 2016… THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE.

THE ART OF CHARLIE CHAN HOCK CHYE is a brilliant (and totally fictional) historical biography detailing the life of an famous (faux) cartoonist as told through (falsified) excerpts of work from throughout the artist’s ‘career.’ Featuring a variety of styles from vintage newspaper strips to commercial art jobs, articles and found objects, pages of Chye’s various sketchbooks, intertwined with a glimpse of the actual history comics and also the island city-state of Singapore. Sonny’s work here is a true tour de force and already making huge ripples in the art world as well as being considered so controversial in Liew’s homeland that it has been cited for its “potential to undermine the authority and legitimacy of the Republic of Singapore government.”

The reviews for this eagerly awaited book from Sonny are universally glowing, positively gushing, and rightfully efficacious. We agree, this is definitely not to be missed!

The Isotope is honored to get to be part of Sonny’s exclusive ten-stop tour of North America for this remarkable book. Come join us for a very special celebration of one of comics best, and most unique, creators.

Dr. Fate Vol. 1 TP
Writer: Paul Levitz – Artist: Sonny Liew

You thought global warming was bad? Anubis, the Egyptian Lord of Dead, is preparing the flood to wash the world away. Standing in his way? An overwhelmed Brooklyn med student who’s been handed the helmet of Fate, without an instruction manual. This title collects the first seven issues of the acclaimed new series, plus the eight-page sneak peek story from CONVERGENCE: AQUAMAN #2!

Art Of Charlie Chan Hock Chye HC Regular Edition
Writer/Artist: Sonny Liew

Meet Charlie Chan Hock Chye, the greatest comic book artist you’ve probably never heard of. When he started making comics in Singapore as a boy of 16 in 1954, Chan expected fame and fortune to quickly follow. But just as Singapore’s road to independence would be full of twists and turns, so too would Chan’s own journey as an artist. Splicing together a dizzying array of art styles, genres and forms, Sonny Liew’s multilayered graphic novel is a celebration of life, comics and storytelling. The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is an innovative work that challenges the possibilities of the comics medium, creating a double-edged history.

They will be delivered by an international suite of Lucasfilm artists who will give a rare insight into the highly-regarded expertise and artistry synonymous with Lucasfilm Singapore.

This year’s STGCC will have a total of 37 product launches, including comics, limited-edition toys and merchandise, and features over 100 exhibitors and 50 upcoming artists from 12 countries.

“Putting together a convention like STGCC which brings artists, writers, illustrators, and designers of such high calibre to Asia has been an exceptional experience. And I believe our fans will feel the same way over the next three days as they come up close and personal with the very people who breathe life into our favourite comics and toys. We also made sure there are lots of coveted collectibles for our fans to take home and enjoy,” says Project Director of STGCC 2010 Ms Yeow Hui Leng.

The first-time ticketed event is expected to draw 45,000 visitors including toy designers, comic creators, illustrators, game developers, publishers and fans from Asia. STGCC 2010 is co-produced by Reed Exhibitions Singapore and US-based ReedPOP, the team behind international events including the New York Comic Con, New York Anime Festival, and Star Wars Celebration.

The show is open to the public from Friday, 10 Dec to Sunday, 12 Dec. (Please refer to fact sheet for opening hours) Tickets are priced at $15.00 for a 1-Day pass and $25.00 for a 3-Day pass (inclusive of 7% GST and handling fees). For more information on STGCC, visit www.singaporetgcc.com.

Panel Description:

Four Color Reality: Making Comics Relevant to Readers Across Cultures. Comic book stories have become the core of American pop culture—is there a big-budget spectacular that doesn’t in some fashion owe its existence to comic book roots these days? But sales of traditional-format comic books themselves have been in decline for years. This panel explores one reason for this shrinking market: the divergence between the identities of mainstream comic icons—who are typically straight, white, male and American—and the demographic makeup of a new generation of readers. How can the comic book industry connect with changing audiences—not just of diverse races and backgrounds, but of different cultural and national origins as well?
