From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., he will give a talk about how he developed his craft and discuss his career in the comics industry. That session will conclude with a question-and-answer period. Then from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. he will be signing in the museum’s gift shop, Geppi’s Comic World. Admission for the talk is free with paid admission for non-museum members and free for museum members, however, reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Admission for the signing in the store is free to all.
Martinbrough’s work, as well as that of many other creators, is currently on display at GEM as part of the widely lauded exhibit Milestones: African Americans in Comics, Pop Culture and Beyond, which runs through December 31, 2014. Among numerous projects, he has garnered praise for his Detective Comics work with Rucka, during which he co-created characters that were featured in the Batman: Gotham Knights animated DVD as a companion to director Christopher Nolan’s trilogy of Batman films.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Shawn Martinbrough back to GEM and to offer our community the chance to get to know this exciting creator in such an intimate setting,” said Melissa Bowersox, President of Geppi’s Entertainment Museum.
Martinbrough’s other recent comic book work includes Luke Cage Noir and Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive for Marvel Comics. He also illustrated Captain America: The First Avenger, a promotional comic book created exclusively for the U.S. Army & Air Force Exchange Service, which runs the on-base stores on military posts. It had a million copy print run and was released in conjunction with the feature film of the same name.
For more than the last two years, Martinbrough has served as artist on the Image Comics series Thief of Thieves. Produced by Robert Kirkman, the creator of both the comic book and the hit AMC television series The Walking Dead, Thief of Thieves is in development as a television series as well. Martinbrough is also the co-creator and co-author of The REN, an upcoming 200-page graphic novel set during the Harlem Renaissance. It will be published by First Second Books. His art instruction book, How To Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling, is published by Random House and has been reprinted in several languages.
His work has been covered by The Hollywood Reporter, The New York Daily News, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, AOL, AintItCoolNews.com, Architecture Magazine, Publisher’s Weekly, The Washington Times, National Public Radio, SIRIUS/XM Radio, Ebony, Essence, Vibe, The Source and others, and he has lectured at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, The University of Michigan, The Savannah College of Art and Design, Prince George’s Community College, BEA/Book Expo of America and The 100 Black Men of America Conference.

AMC JOINS FORCES WITH SKYBOUND AND RUCKUS SPORTS FOR THE WALKING DEAD ESCAPE
ONE-OF-A-KIND ZOMBIE OBSTACLE COURSE BASED ON THE NETWORK’S DRAMA SERIES AND ROBERT KIRKMAN’S COMIC BOOK SERIES COMES TO SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2013
(BOSTON, MA) – July 2, 2013 – AMC announced today it has joined forces with Skybound, Robert Kirkman’s imprint at Image Comics, and Ruckus Sports for the second annual The Walking Dead Escape (www.thewalkingdeadescape.com), a zombie obstacle course at Petco Park during Comic-Con weekend in San Diego, July 19th and 20th. Last year, Skybound and Ruckus Sports brought the first The Walking Dead Escape to San Diego during the 2012 Comic-Con weekend. The Walking Dead Escape allows fans to live out the events from the groundbreaking, Emmy-award winning and top-rated AMC series, which is based on Robert Kirkman’s Eisner Award-winning best selling The Walking Dead graphic novels.
The course is open July 19 & 20 from 5:00 – 10:00 pm where Survivors can climb, crawl and slide as part of the adventure and to also avoid confrontation by hordes of Walkers. The Walking Dead Escape is not a race and Survivors are not timed. The goal is for the Survivors to reach the decontamination zone where their level of infection – if any – is determined by a confidential military scan. Walkers are transformed into the undead by professional makeup teams and released on the course to haunt the living. In addition, participants and spectators alike can immerse themselves in The Walking Dead Fan Festival, an interactive “after party” featuring games, food, and merchandise from all facets of The Walking Dead universe.
“After overwhelming positive feedback from those who experienced ‘The Walking Dead Escape: San Diego’ last summer, we wanted to bring our fans an even bigger and better experience for 2013. As promised, we will be upping the ante as we bring on board celebrated and renowned new partner, AMC,” said Liam Brenner, founder of The Walking Dead Escape and Ruckus Sports. “With AMC’s creative prowess, we are confident that this year’s ‘Escape’ will be the most action-packed and thrilling event yet. We know fan expectations are high and hope to deliver beyond their wildest imaginations.”
“The fan reaction to ‘The Walking Dead” on AMC has been truly remarkable and exceeded our wildest expectations. It is the number one show on television among adults 18-49, and this live experience allows these passionate and dedicated fans to actually enter the zombie apocalypse that provides the backdrop for the series,” said Theresa Beyer, VP of activation and promotion at AMC. “Whether acting as survivors, walkers or spectators, this perilous and immersive attraction allows fans of the show to put themselves in the world that they can’t get enough of.”
This year The Walking Dead Escape is elevated with new props, scenes and full Walking Dead experiences. Fans may choose among three ways to participate in this epic adventure; as a “Survivor” racing through the zombie-infested evacuation zone with familiar scenes and props from the show and comic book series; as a “Walker” in the undead horde or as a “Spectator” watching the apocalypse from sidelines at the Escape Party.
For more information or to register for the event, please visit www.thewalkingdeadescape.com. To view video and photos from last summer’s event in San Diego go to https://www.facebook.com/TheWalkingDeadEscape. To receive updates about the Zombie Apocalypse, be sure to follow @TDWEscape on Twitter! Early registration is strongly recommended, as walk-ups may not be available on event day.

Comments Off on CA – The Walking Dead 100 Exhibit
Sina Grace, Todd Nauck, and Jason Reeves appear at the Gusford Gallery on Friday May 31, 2013 from 6:00 – 9:00 PM!
Robert Kirkman’s Eisner Award-winning comic book series, The Walking Dead, celebrated its 100th issue last July and the issue became the top-selling comic book of 2012. Last year, Skybound and The Hero Initiative gave the comic industry’s leading artists and visionaries over 100 blank covered issues of The Walking Dead #100 to create a set of remarkable artwork originals to commemorate this special issue of the groundbreaking Skybound/Image Comics series. Regular The Walking Dead series artist Charlie Adlard is among the contributors and now, for the first and last time ever, all 106 of the original sketch covers will be on display together — but for one night only. All of the artists came together to benefit The Hero Initiative, the comic book industry’s non-profit corporation helping comic creators in need. While The Walking Dead continues to break records in every form of media, it all started with the comic book and that will be celebrated at this special gallery show and auction.
To enhance the experience for attendees, The Walking Dead #100 original sketch cover artists Sina Grace (Not My Bag), Todd Nauck (Invincible Universe), and Jason Reeves (F-OO Fighters) will be in attendance to answer questions about their covers.
On Friday, May 31 at GUSFORD | los angeles from 6:00 – 9:00 PM, 7016 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, all comic fans are welcome to witness history in the making and in some cases, take a piece of it home. In addition to the once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing all The Walking Dead #100 original sketch covers together for the first time ever, four covers will also be auctioned to benefit the industry’s favorite charity at the same time. Two covers will be auctioned via eBay during the course of the event, and attendees can bid via their own mobile devices. Another cover will be auctioned live, on-site for attendees. And in an unprecedented move, a fourth cover will be created live that night by artist Todd Nauck for auction during the event. All attendees at the GUSFORD event can watch Nauck, a comic master, live at work during the event as he creates the final and 106th original sketch cover.
The remainder of the covers will be auctioned off via eBay starting June 4.
Amazingly enough, there is no cost to attend this comic lover’s dream event. It’s free and open to the public but if you feel like more celebrating, there will also be a cash bar in place and zombie-styled treats courtesy of event collaborator and neighboring shop, Golden Apple Comics. We want you to save your money to bid on the covers instead of an entrance fee. The event is a gift from GUSFORD | los angeles and Skybound to benefit The Hero Initiative and the fine work they do as the first-ever federally chartered non-profit corporation dedicated to helping comic legends in need and providing a safety net for them.
