CA – Nick Nolte Signing

Actor Nick Nolte appears at the Skirball Cultural Center to present his new memoir REBEL on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 8:00 PM. Get tickets here…

Legendary actor Nick Nolte delivers his most revealing performance yet. This intimate memoir is a tale of art, passion, commitment, addiction, and the quest for personal enlightenment as intense and hypnotic as the man himself. In a career spanning five decades and hundreds of roles, Nick Nolte has become a true Hollywood icon. Rising from a difficult childhood in the rural Midwest to leading roles and a trio of Oscar nominations in the golden West, he has been both celebrated and vilified; survived marriages, divorces, and a string of romances; was named the “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine; and suffered public humiliation over his addiction issues, including a drug-fueled trip down the Pacific Coast Highway that resulted in his infamous arrest.

Despite these ups and downs, Nolte has remained true to the craft he loves, portraying a diverse range of characters with his trademark physicality and indelible gravelly voice. Already thirty-five when his performance in the 1976 mini-series Rich Man, Poor Man launched him to stardom, Nolte never learned to play by Hollywood’s rules. A rebel who defies expectations, a committed actor willing to go to extremes for a role, Nolte is motivated by personal, edgy projects, not box office success. Today, he has found peace on his own terms, yet is still driven, juggling projects while raising his young daughter.

Mandvi

Aasif Mandvi appears in conversation with Reza Aslan on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 7:30 pm! Reserve free tickets at the link…

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Presented as part of Book Soup at the Skirball, comedian Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) discusses his new memoir, No Land’s Man, with writer and scholar Reza Aslan.

If you’re an Indo-Muslim-British-American actor who has spent more time in bars than mosques over the past few decades, turns out it’s a little tough to explain who you are or where you are from. In No Land’s Man Mandvi explores this and other conundrums through humorous stories about his family, ambition, desire, and culture that range from dealing with his brunch-obsessed father to his high school career as a Michael Jackson impersonator to joining a Bible study group in order to seduce a nice Christian girl to improbably becoming America’s favorite Muslim/Indian/Arab/brown/doctor correspondent on The Daily Show.

Mandvi’s hilarious and passionate description of his journey will resonate with anyone who has had to navigate the murky space between lands. Or anyone who really loves brunch.

A book signing follows the program.

CA – Habibi Signing

Craig Thompson speaks and signs at the Skirball Cultural Center on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Press Release:

Award-winning graphic novelist Craig Thompson comes to the Skirball to discuss his latest and highly praised graphic novel Habibi in a slide-illustrated talk.

Sprawling across an epic landscape of desert harems and modern industrial clutter, Habibi tells the tale of Dodola and Zam, refugee child slaves bound to each other by chance, circumstance, and love. We follow them as their lives unfold together and apart and as they struggle to make a place for themselves in a world fueled by fear and greed.

At once contemporary and timeless, Habibi gives us a love story of astounding resonance. It is simultaneously a parable about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between first and third worlds, the common heritage of Christianity and Islam, and the magic of storytelling.

A Q&A and book signing will follow the program.
