Cartoonists Simon Hanselmann and Katie Skelly appear at the Strand Book Store on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 7 PM – 10 PM!
Simon Hanselmann’s comics don’t spare the bawdy, broke, bad-tempered extremes of its Saturday-morning cartoon characters. Megg and Mogg in Amsterdam takes the titular weed-addled witch and her feline partner out of the suburban home they’ve made in his previous work in Megahex, at VICE, and in mini-comics aplenty, all the way to the stoner capital of Europe. Taking the gang out of their familiar down-under backwater doesn’t lift them from their singular miasma of bleak moods, dire hijinx, and unclear boundaries–join Simon at Strand for a wild night of the same.
Joining Simon in conversation will be fellow cartoonist Katie Skelly, Brooklynite creator of Nurse Nurse, Operation Margarine, the ongoing My Pretty Vampire, as well as comics for the sex-positive website Slutist. She’s also written and lectured about comics for outlets such as The Comics Journal, Fantagraphics, Japan Society, The Center for Cartoon Studies, Fordham University and The New School, and co-hosts the Trash Twins podcast with fellow cartoonist Sarah Horrocks.

This new mini-comic series chronicles the morbidly hilarious, subtly perverted, often demeaning lifestyle of the chronically ill. “No Visitors” draws heavily on Gronewold’s personal experience living with the incurable, life threatening illness Cystic Fibrosis. His work has been featured in Vice, It’s Nice That, and The Lifted Brow.

Simon Hanselmann appears at Floating World Comics on Thursday April 7, 2016 from 6:00 – 10:00 PM for the Megg & Mogg In Amsterdam and Other Stories release party, art exhibit & musical performance.
Born in mini-comix and made popular by Tumblr, Simon Hanselmann’s comics embody the angst of being an aging 20-something. In the wake of the New York Times Best-Seller Megahex, Megg & Mogg in Amsterdam follows Megg the witch, Mogg the cat, their roommate Owl, and Werewolf Jones as they all struggle unsuccessfully with their depression, drug dependency, sexuality, poverty, lack of ambition, and their complex feelings about each other.
Debuting this April 7th at Floating World, Megg & Mogg in Amsterdam is the graphic novel anthem for people who are trying to find their place in the world. Collecting all of Hanselmann’s contributions to Vice.com, the Ignatz Award-nominated short story “St. Owl’s Bay,” and other surprises, Megg & Mogg in Amsterdam will add additional color and background for fans of Megahex. We will have original art from the book on display all month and Simon has prepared a special musical performance for the release party.
