CA – The Wolf Launch Party

Tom Neely signs on Friday, July 8th from 8pm – 10pm at Secret Headquarters!

The Wolf is a new graphic novel by Los Angeles-based painter-cartoonist Tom Neely. The book tells a simple love story, but one woven with surrealist horror, werewolf lore and its own brand of nightmare logic. With The Wolf, Neely progresses from the traditional cartooning style he showed off in his previous books, The Blot and Brilliantly Ham-Fisted, to a form that blends comics-style storytelling with a fine arts approach to imagery. The ultimate effect is equal parts touching and chilling.

CA – Level Up Signing

GENE YANG & THIEN PHAM sign at Secret Headquarters on Friday, June 17th from 7pm – 9pm!

Join us in celebrating the release of “American Born Chinese” writer Gene Yang and artist Thien Pham’s new graphic novel, “Level Up”. Stop by this Friday to have a drink and get your book signed!

A rundown of the new book:

“Smackdown! Video Games vs. Medical School!

Which will win the battle for our hero’s attention in Gene Luen Yang’s new graphic novel?

Dennis Ouyang lives in the shadow of his parents’ high expectations. They want him to go to med school and become a doctor. Dennis just wants to play video games—and he might actually be good enough to do it professionally. But four adorable, bossy, and occasionally terrifying angels arrive just in time to lead Dennis back onto the straight and narrow: the path to gastroenterology. It’s all part of the plan, they tell him. But is it?

This powerful piece of magical realism brings into sharp relief the conflict many teens face between pursuing their dreams and living their parents’. Partnered with the deceptively simple, cute art of newcomer Thien Pham, Gene Yang has returned to the subject he revolutionized with American Born Chinese. Whimsical and serious by turns, Level Up is a new look at the tale that Yang has made his own: coming of age as an Asian American.”

CA – Octopus Pie Signing

MEREDITH GRAN and several friends sign THIS Thursday July 15th from 7pm – 9pm at Secret Headquarters.

Meredith Gran’s OCTOPUS PIE debuted in 2007 and quickly developed a large fan base, making it one of the most popular comics on the Internet. The webcomic follows the adventures of nerdy and acerbic Eve Ning, who lives with her long-lost childhood friend (and perpetual happy stoner), Hanna, in Brooklyn. Initially published three times a week, and now posted in collected “episodes,” the stories and world of OCTOPUS PIE have developed over hundreds of strips. Now the first two years of the comic are collected in the beautiful Villard trade paperback OCTOPUS PIE: There Are No Stars In Brooklyn.

In the twilight zone between college and the adult world lies the sardonic, witty, maddening and sometimes melancholy terrain that Gran’s addictive comic OCTOPUS PIE maps with devastating, drop-dead-funny accuracy. Crazed childhood rivals, art world hipsters, Eve’s meddlesome mom, and boyfriends past and present crowd their lives. These alternately hilarious and thoughtful vignettes of twenty-something life will ring true to any reader, and sharp situational humor and crazy characters give OCTOPUS PIE a unique charm that’s hard to resist.

A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Gran is influenced by her experiences in Brooklyn, where she lived until she moved to Portland, Oregon (in a neighborhood that reminds her of her old home). She’s also made a name for herself within the webcomics community, organizing the first-ever webcomics convention of its kind, Webcomics Weekend in New England. The second annual convention takes place this November.

Join your favorite webcartoonists – including LA locals and visitors from afar – for a night of fun on Sunset Boulevard!

Featuring appearances by:

Jorge Cham (Piled Higher and Deeper)
Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie)
Dave Kellett (Sheldon)
David Malki (Wondermark)
R. Stevens (Diesel Sweeties)
Zach Weiner (Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal)

Come for the fine drinks and stay for the even finer conversation! Get things signed! Make startling confessions!
