Award-winning comic book publisher BOOM! Studios and its imprints, KaBOOM!, BOOM! Box, and Archaia, announced today it will return to exhibit at Comic-Con International in San Diego (San Diego Comic-Con, as it’s commonly called, or SDCC), to be held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California July 23-27, 2014.

Splash Page Comic Art would like to welcome Joe Quinones to our family of talented artists!

Joe Quinones is a relative newcomer to the industry, having first been published by DC Comics for their now defunct Teen Titans GO series in 2007. He is probably best known for his collaboration with writer Kurt Busiek on the Green Lantern serial for Mark Chiarello’s Eisner Award-winning Wednesday Comics. Since then, Joe has illustrated a number of covers and short stories for DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse, with a current cover run on Captain Marvel. Joe also has some unannounced interior work on the horizon, as well as a Zatanna/Black Canary graphic novel, written by Paul Dini, due out at the end of 2013.

Comic-Con has come and gone! While this year’s convention was bigger and more crowded than ever before, I still had the best time I’ve ever had in San Diego. Planning ahead is definitely a pre-requisite more than ever as the convention gets bigger and brings in more and more celebrities. The big signings were required to ticket which caused many fans to be left out and unless you camped out for the panel rooms you were out of luck.

One of the biggest highlights this year was getting to go to Dos Equis’s “Most Interesting Party” thanks to booth-mate Mark Hay of Splash Page Comic Art and his client Charlie Adlard, artist of The Walking Dead. Celebrity chef Craig Thornton of Wolvesmouth in Los Angeles was there to serve up a six course meal, each of which was amazing but the kicker was the dessert, shortcake topped with whipped cream infused with pop rocks! It was a very swanky event and we got to rub elbows with celebrities like professional nerd Chris Hardwick, collage artist Michael Anderson, and NFL linebacker Dhani Jones. Big thanks to Bjorn, Andrea, Melinda, and the rest of the Dos Equis team for hosting! Be sure to check out Dos Equis’s upcoming Most Interesting Academy, an initative to encourage people to follow their passions.

Then on Friday night Team CAF made a trip to Petco Park which had been overrun by the Walking Dead! We spent about 45 minutes running through the stadium, climbing over obstacles, and dodging zombies at every turn. I was caught on many occasions and quarantined as “infected” by the medical staff awaiting us at the end of the course. The zombies were quite dedicated and only broke character once when I turned and hugged one chasing me with outstretched arms to the laughs and applause of the surrounding zombies and on-looking staff.

I need to thank the many friends and complete strangers who helped me out over the course of the convention, proving that it’s always necessary to practice good karma. Special thanks go out to Bill Cox and Chris Haggard of Comic Art Fans, Ben & Jeni DeFeo, and my roommate “DrunkN” Randy House.

The Beguiling’s Peter Birkemoe will be on hand and exhibiting in a small corner of booth #1629, owned by venerable Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly, from Preview Night, Wednesday July 11th, through Sunday, July 15th.

The Beguiling represents original art by some of art comics’ greatest names at their online art store, including D&Q cartoonists Kevin Huizenga (Gloriana), Anders Nilsen (Big Questions), and Seth (Palookaville), and comics superstars Jeff Lemire (Essex County), Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba (Casanova), and Bryan Lee O’Malley (Scott Pilgrim). The Beguiling will have over 400 pieces of original art on hand by 26 different artists at San Diego this year. Previews of most pages available online now at http://www.beguilingoriginalart.com/.

Highlights of this year’s mix of comics art and illustration include:

- The Beguiling proudly announces that it will begin selling original art work from creators Pascal Girard, Matt Kindt, and Shintaro Kago! Girard is the author of the recently released graphic novel The Reunion from Drawn & Quarterly, and pages from that work and other illustrations will be on hand. Matt Kindt is the author of the graphic novels Super Spy, The Tooth, and 3:Story. His current series is MIND MGMT, an ongoing comic from Dark Horse, and art will be on hand from these and other series’! Kago is a renowned Ero-guro manga artist in Japan, and his work includes truly unique formalist experiments (and some very disturbing imagery), and has been praised by sources as diverse as Scott McCloud and Vice Magazine.

- A selection of pages from recent Drawn & Quarterly graphic novel releases, including pages from Kevin Huizenga’s Gloriana HC and The Wild Kingdom HC, Brian Ralph’s Cave-In, and Anders Nilsen’s Eisner Award nominated graphic novel Big Questions.

- Dozens of new, never-before offered pages by artist Farel Dalrymple. Including new pages from Dalrymple’s work on the series’ Prophet, Fantastic Four, Omega The Unknown, Vice Magazine, and more! So new these aren’t even on our website yet!

- Dozens of new pages by Norwegian artist Jason, from across his many popular graphic novels.

Comic-Concert: The 2012 After Party, a fan created event that focuses on the musical aspect of pop culture, returns for its Fourth Annual installment, now being held at the Whiskey Girl (located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and G Street in Downtown San Diego) on Sunday, July 15th at 6pm. Over the past few years, the “Geek Rock” genre has grown significantly in size, and this special event allows Comic-Con and local San Diegans the opportunity to experience a different side of the Popular Arts. Sponsored in part by Youmacon and ComicsOnline.com, the evening will feature a special performance by San Diego’s Musical Comedy Band: Random Gibberish!

Attendees are encouraged to arrive in costume from Comic-Con for our annual Costume Contest! For the 2012 event, Shout! Factory has been kind enough to provide several prizes for best costume! Contest will be judged by ComicsOnline’s Editor-In-Chief, Kevin Gaussoin, and some special guests.

There is no cover charge to enter this event, but attendees are kindly requested to make a $5 donation at the door to support this program. You do not need to have a Comic-Con pass to attend this performance. Must be 21+ to enter.

Random Gibberish has been channeling their love of pop culture and general insanity into music since 2003. In 2009, they won ABC’s “Official LOST Theme Competition” at Comic-Con. They rock out and make people laugh with songs inspired by comic books, video games, movies and TV.
