The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is having a membership party to kick off Book Expo America, and we want you to be a part of it! Sponsored by IDW, the CBLDF Book Expo Welcome Mixer happens this Tuesday, May 24!

The CBLDF is inviting the book industry out for a welcome mixer on Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Publishing professionals, booksellers, librarians, and creators are all invited to kick off BEA. The party is free for all BEA attendees and NYC comics and book professionals and retailers!

CBLDF will be soliciting memberships and donations to support its current work protecting comics and graphic novels. Please join us, and invite your colleagues!

The attacks on books and comics are becoming more frequent and more insidious, so CBLDF needs your help to spread the word. Currently, comics and graphic novels are being targeted by customs agents in the US and Canada. Individuals are having their books and digital devices searched and seized. Meanwhile, CBLDF continues to fight laws that would affect the sale and display of comics in brick and mortar stores and online.

CBLDF is fighting to protect your content, creators, and readers in the face of these and other threats. We can’t do it without you! Come to the party and support the cause! Together, we can ensure that CBLDF protects the First Amendment rights we all depend upon to do business.

The Comix Galaxy Returns to Miami Book Fair International This November

A FULL SCHEDULE OF PROGRAMS CELEBRATING COMIC BOOKS & GRAPHIC NOVELS -
AUTHORS, EVENTS, EDUCATION WORKSHOPS, INTERACTIVE PRESENTATIONS & MORE!

MIAMI, September 14, 2010 –The 27th edition of the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by the Florida Center for the Literary Arts at Miami Dade College (MDC), will take place November 14-21, 2010, at the college’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami and will again feature the popular Comix Galaxy.

The New York Times hailed the Miami Book Fair as the model for all book festivals. The Fair again broke new ground two years ago when it launched The Comix Galaxy, a program that celebrates the place of comics and graphic novels in American literature with panels, sessions for educators, workshops for kids and teens, and more.

The Comix Galaxy invites teachers, librarians, parents, and comics and graphic novel creators to participate in the School of Comics, to be held on Thursday, November 18 and Friday, November 19.

The first day of the School of Comics will be a Day of Education for teachers, librarians and parents on how to expand the academic curricula with graphic novels, and will be held on Thursday, November 18. Programming will be keynoted by Dr. William Ayers, education theorist, professor of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and author of To Teach: The Journey, in Comics. Also on this program will be James “Bucky” Carter, professor of English at the University of Texas at El Paso and author of Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels, Chris Schweizer, professor of Sequential Art and Animation at Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta and author of Crogan’s March, and Adam Johnson, professor of Creative Writing at Stanford University and co-editor of the Stanford University Graphic Novel Project. Practical examples of how comics and graphic novels have been integrated into curriculum will be part of this event as well as lists of titles that work in the classroom environment. The Day of Education will be moderated by Carol Fitzgerald, publisher of the popular website site GraphicNovelReporter.com.

On Friday, November 19, a second day of School of Comics programming will address aspiring comics creators with an emphasis on established creators teaching their craft and talking about how to get published. Participating creators include Amy Ignatow (The Popularity Papers), Tracy White (How I Made It to Eighteen) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile).

For the past two years, the weekend portion of The Comix Galaxy has presented panels by diverse and exciting creators from all facets of the comics and graphic novel industry. This year promises to be just as inspiring with David Axe (War Is Boring), Barry Deutsch (Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword), Sid Jacobson (Anne Frank: The Anne Frank House Authorized Graphic Biography), Mat Johnson (Dark Rain: A New Orleans Story), Chip Kidd (Shazam! The Golden Age of the World’s Mightiest Mortal), Denis Kitchen (The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen), Inverna Lockpez and Dean Haspiel (Cuba: My Revolution), Lars Martinson (Tonoharu), Mark McKenna (Banana Tail), Vanessa Davis (Make Me a Woman), Jaime Hernandez (The Art of Jaime Hernandez: The Secrets of Life and Death), Joan Hilty (Senior Editor, DC Comics/ Vertigo), Joe Sacco (Footnotes in Gaza), Joshua Hale Fialkov (Tumor), Alex Simmons (Archie) and many others.

Original drawings and final page blowups from the graphic novel Cuba: My Revolution (DC Comics/ Vertigo) by DeanHaspiel and Inverna Lockpez will be on display throughout the week of the Fair and beyond, part of an exhibition at Miami Dade College’s Center Gallery. Another exhibition will tie in with the Fair’s celebration of Mexican culture. It will consist of pages from a 12-issue comic book series about the Mexican Revolution by artist Jose Luis Pescador, written by some of the greats of contemporary Mexican literature.

Another favorite, Kids’ Comic Con, returns from New York City with hands-on workshops and portfolio reviews! Last year’s crowd-pleasing activities got kids and teens drawing and writing alongside professional artists/teachers. Free and open to all over the three-day weekend Street Fair, November 19-21, Kids’ Comic Con is the place for every kid who dreams of creating the next Superman or Wimpy Kid.

The return of School of Comics and Kids’ Comic Con to Comix Galaxy 2010 is part of the Miami Book Fair’s continued celebration of comics and graphic novels. We look forward to sharing more names of participating graphic novelists and comic book artists in the weeks to come.

MCAF Announces Panel Schedule

The Maine Comics Arts Festival has announced its pre-convention panel schedule for Saturday, May 22nd hosted by the Portland Public Library (Main Branch, 5 Monument Square, Portland, ME)

Kids Cartooning Workshop – 10:00 AM

Children ages 7-12 are invited to try their hand at cartoon art. Using simple shapes, comic book artist Jay Piscopo will demonstrate how to build figures and perspective to create art that tells a story. Portland, Maine artist Jay Piscopo is the author and illustrator of The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli all-ages graphic novel series. Piscopo also co-created The Scrap City Pack Rats, art directed the award-winning Fizz and Martina Math Adventures, and was an animator for ABC TV’s Squigglevision.

This free presentation is for librarians and educators who are interested in the world of graphic novels and are looking for definitions, explanations, and advice on where to begin or expand your collection or how to effectively use graphic novels in the classroom. John conducts this workshop nationally with librarians and educators and is known for his interactive, conversational style. This is his first time presenting in Maine. You won’t want to miss this unique opportunity!

THE PRESENTER: John Shableski is sales manager at Diamond Book Distributors, the world’s largest distributor of English-language comic books, and one of the biggest distributors of graphic novels in the U.S. through its Diamond Book Distributors division. John has been a panelist at BookExpo America, a moderator for graphic novel panels at the New York Comic Con, a guest speaker at library events, regional book shows and a symposium coordinator. He’s currently collaborating on several graphic novel symposiums across the country. His focus is on the independent bookstore market, public and school libraries. 

Cartooning Styles – 12:30pm
A humorous presentation about art styles, featuring images of popular cartoon characters like Sponge Bob Squarepants and Mickey Mouse, and how different artists interpret them. We’ll talk about designing characters, and then give an interactive drawing demo, in which the audience will instruct Raina in creating characters and images.
Age range: 5 – 12

 
Center for Cartoon Studies Presents: Page Building Workshop – 1:30pm
This hands-on workshop will take a closer look at the basic building blocks of the comics page. Cartoonist and teacher Robyn Chapman will explain how to use page composition to control pacing and create effective stories. No matter how little experience you have, you will leave this workshop having composed a comics page!  All supplies will be provided.

 
Live Comics Reading: Smile & Astronaut Elementary – 2:30
Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman will read (and perform) chapters from their all-ages graphic novels, as the illustrated panels are projected onto a large screen for all to see. They’ll also ask for some volunteers from the audience to play some of the characters.
Age range: 5 and up. 
Featured Guest Discussion - 3:00pm

This panel discussion will cover the works of the festival’s featured guests and will include a question and answer session.

 
The Pros and Cons of Small Press Publishing – 4:00pm
When a writer or artist decides to pursue the comic book industry, the 21st century has provided them with several different options, one of them being small press publishing. But how does one decide the best route to take. Join the creator of Sky Pirates of Valendor, Everett Soares along with Promotions Consultant, Susan Soares as they discuss the Pros and Cons of small press publishing as they share their journey through the industry.

Norwalk, CT / Brooklyn, NY, August 12, 2009: The renowned Brooklyn Book Festival and New York Comic Con (NYCC) announce that the premiere pop culture convention and its stars will have a powerful presence at this year’s Brooklyn Book Festival, which the L.A. Times has called “the center of the literary universe.” NYCC will have its own colorful and exciting programming area at the free Festival, which draws nearly 30,000 visitors to experience readings and panels featuring international literary superstars, buzzworthy newcomers and more than 150 booksellers, publishers, independent presses and literary organizations in a bustling literary marketplace.

NYCC’s programming area at the Brooklyn Book Festival will include a performance tent, guest presentations, guest autographing sessions and a dedicated marketplace area. The next NYCC will take place October 8 – 10, 2010 at the Jacob K. Javits Center. Ranked by Crain’s New York Business as the second-largest annual event in NYC, it has grown from a convention that attracted 33,000 visitors when it was launched in 2006 to a show that will occupy the entire Javits Center and will attract well over 75,000 fans in 2010. For comics exhibitors and vendors, the NYCC programming area will provide a unique opportunity for them to not only have a home that attracts like-minded customers and fans, but to have a central location where new fans and readers can check out the latest in comics and pop culture entertainment. Comic book writer and editor Denny O’Neil, creator Phil Jimenez, and writer and editor Tom DeFalco are just a few of the many popular guests who will appear in the NYCC programming area. In addition to guest speakers, NYCC’s diverse Brooklyn Book Festival programming includes Hip Hop Hearts Anime, a live-performance featuring local DJs which focuses on the intermixing of American hip hop culture and Japanese anime. This year’s Brooklyn Book Festival will again feature a literary marketplace with more than 150 booksellers, publishers and literary organizations in Borough Hall Plaza as well as panel discussions and readings, a children’s authors stage and special programming for teens and exhibitors that will include bookstores, publishers and literary organizations. Readings are held at Brooklyn Borough Hall, in Borough Hall Plaza and Columbus Park, at St. Francis College and the Brooklyn Historical Society.
