OR – Tongues Signing

Award-winning comics artist Anders Nilsen will officially unveil his new book Tongues at Floating World Comics in Portland on Thursday, September 7th from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Original artwork from the book will be on display in conjunction with Portland’s First Thursdays Art Walk, and Nilsen will give a short talk about the book and the process of putting it together.

Set in Modern Central Asia Tongues follows the intertwined stories of an imprisoned god, an East African orphan on an errand of murder and a young American man with a teddy bear, lost on the tattered fringes of the human world. It is a story of adventure and revenge and a meditation on human nature in this fraught present moment.

The full-color, large-format Tongues is Nilsen’s most ambitious work to date and marks a return to something a bit closer to the more traditional comics form he last explored in his multiple award winning Big Questions (Drawn and Quarterly, 2011). The artist is serializing the book in large-format, full-color comics to be self-published and distributed in conjunction with No Miracles Press over the next few years until the story is complete.

About the author: Anders Nilsen is the author of nine books including Big Questions, The End, and Poetry is Useless. His comics have appeared in the New York Times, Kramer’s Ergot, Medium and elsewhere. His work has been translated widely, and exhibited internationally. He lives in Portland, Oregon.

Anders Nilsen (Poetry is Useless, Big Questions) presents A Walk in Eden from Drawn + Quarterly on Saturday November 12, 2016 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM!

Press Release:

A keen observer of the natural world and the mystical treasures contained within, Anders Nilsen uses lush, inky lines to craft an enchanting, meditative journey for your coloring tools. A Walk in Eden is a fantastical view of primeval creation, with an exquisite mix of sprawling landscapes and close-up examinations of plants, fungi, and minerals—think giant crystal formations emerging out of pools surrounded by lush vegetation and flowers the size of small trees. Though this is a world void of humans, here and there are small reminders of our presence.

Informed by the designs of Ernst Haeckel and other early scientific and botanical illustration, Nilsen’s world is intricate, playful, and inspired, waiting for you to make it your own. With 80+ full-page drawings, Nilsen invites you to join in the fun and bring the adult- and kid-friendly world of A Walk in Eden to life.

There will be original art by Nilsen on display, and Floating World Comics will be in attendance selling books. Snacks will be provided by Stumptown and Poplandia, and the event will even include complimentary art supplies from Blick. We’ll be giving away select prizes for outstanding work as well.

Press Release:

Acclaimed cartoonists Marc Bell (Stroppy,) and Anders Nilsen (Poetry is Useless) will be at Floating World Comics on Tuesday July 14th, from 6-8pm reading from and signing their new Drawn & Quarterly books!

Marc Bell will be discussing his first full-length graphic novella, Stroppy, which paints a strange and wordplay-loving world in which the titular hero hopes to win big in a songwriting contest organized by the All-Star Schnauzer Band. Mishap and hilarity ensue as Bell explodes the divide between fine art, doodling, and comics. Anders Nilsen will talk about Poetry is Useless, an expansive, beautifully-packaged collection of his sketchbooks. Poetry is Useless is part travelogue, part commentary on politics and culture, and part conversational ping-pong match.

Marc Bell was born in London, Ontario, and has befuddled and bemused his readers for almost twenty years. He is the author of Hot Potatoe, Pure Pajamas, and Shrimpy and Paul and Friends. His comics have appeared in many Canadian weeklies, Vice, and LA Weekly. He is a twin.

Anders Nilsen is an award-winning cartoonist and visual artist. He is the author of several books, including Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow, Rage of Poseidon, and the magnum opus Big Questions, for which he was awarded the 2012 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize by the Pennsylvania Center for the Book and was nominated for the top prize at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Nilsen has exhibited his drawing and painting internationally. He lives and works in Minneapolis.
