Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez sign at the Philadelphia Free Library on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 7:30PM.
Limit of 5 signed books per person
Co-creators of the comic art series Love and Rockets, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez have been likened in the Times of London and elsewhere as “the graphic equivalent to the fabulism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the Nobel laureate.” A decades-spanning oeuvre, Love and Rockets virtually defined the subversive alt-comic voice of the 1980s and has won a string of Harvey and Kirby Awards. The pair has also collaborated with their brother, Mario Hernandez, in addition to releasing several solo projects. Jaime’s comics include Locas, Penny Century, and Whoa, Nellie!, and Gilbert’s work includes New Love, Luba, New Tales of Old Palomar, and the graphic novel The Troublemakers. In 2009, the Hernandez brothers were named in Time’s “Top 100 Next Wave Storytellers,” and they continue to release new work more than 30 years after the original publication of their influential series.

Lynda Barry signs on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 7:30PM.
Cartoonist, novelist, and playwright Lynda Barry writes and draws the nationally syndicated comic strip Ernie Pook’s Comeek, featuring pre-teen characters Marlys and Freddie as they navigate the emotional traumas of growing up. Barry is also the author of the Alex Award-winning book, One Hundred Demons, and The Good Times are Killing Me, which was adapted as an off-Broadway musical. Winner of a 2009 Eisner Award, her bestselling graphic memoir and how-to book What It Is offered writers gentle creative guidance. Barry offers the same guidance to artists in Picture This—encouraging us to draw and exploring why we start drawing and why we stop. Like What It Is, her new book is an extension of Barry’s popular traveling workshop, “Writing the Unthinkable.”
Join us for Happy Hour at the Free Library! Mix and mingle with other Lynda Barry fans and enjoy light drinks and refreshments before Lynda takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. in the Montgomery Auditorium. Happy Hour runs from 6:30 – 7:15 in Room 108.
