CA – 75 Years of DC Comics

Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, Paul Levitz, and Patton Oswalt appear at the Hammer Museum on Tuesday December 14th at 7pm.

Within its short 75-year lifespan, DC Comics has created and destroyed entire cities, worlds, and universes with a cast of characters that includes the titans of the Superhero world. Comedian, actor, and writer Patton Oswalt will moderate a discussion among author Paul Levitz, DC Comics’ Jim Lee (Co-Publisher of DC Comics), and Geoff Johns (Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment), the creative and editorial superheroes behind the pages of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern, who will discuss the pulp origins of DC Comics’ story lines and characters, as well as the future of digital publishing.

The discussion will be followed by a booksigning of Paul Levitz’s recently published 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking. Published by TASCHEN, this single most comprehensive book on DC Comics (with 720 pages and weighing nearly 16 pounds) includes more than 2,000 images—covers and interiors, original illustrations, photographs, film stills, and collectibles—reproduced using the latest technology to bring the story lines, the characters, and their creators to life. The book includes year-by-year timelines that fold out to nearly four feet and biographies of the legends who built DC Comics, the largest English language publisher of comic books in the world.

Patton Oswalt is a comedian, writer, and actor, and author of the forthcoming Zombie Spaceship Wasteland. As a comedian, Oswalt has shot three TV specials and three critically acclaimed albums, and starred in the documentary The Comedians of Comedy. His Comedy Central One Hour Special My Weakness Is Strong received a Grammy nomination and in 2009 Oswalt won critical acclaim in the feature film Big Fan. Oswalt also provided the voice for Remy, the rat, in Pixar’s Oscar-winning Ratatouille. He tours regularly both nationally and internationally.

Paul Levitz is the author of 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking. Levitz is a comic-book fan who has worked as editor/publisher of The Comic Reader, editor of the Batman titles and others, writer of over 300 stories—including an acclaimed run on Legion of Super-Heroes—and a DC Comics executive, finishing his 38-year stint with the company as President and Publisher. He returned to writing in 2010 with a new series of Legion stories and other projects.

Jim Lee is the Co-Publisher of DC Comics with Dan DiDio. He has illustrated several titles including Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow, All Star Batman and Robin, The Boy Wonder, WildC.A.T.s, and the forthcoming Dark Knight: Boy Wonder. He has received a Harvey Award, an Inkpot Award, and three Wizard Fan Awards in recognition of his work.

Geoff Johns began his comics career writing Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and JSA for DC Comics. He has worked on several titles including The Flash, Green Lantern, Action Comics, Teen Titans, and 52, and wrote the bestselling graphic novel Superman: Brainiac. In 2010 he was appointed Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment.

Tron: Legacy Cast Headed to SDCC 2010 for “ComiTRON”

Press Release:

Convention’s Panel Presentation Features Filmmakers and Talent from the Highly Anticipated 3D High-tech Cultural Phenomenon

Walt Disney Pictures’ “TRON: Legacy” Opens in US Theaters in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX® 3D on December 17, 2010

BURBANK, Calif.– (BUSINESS WIRE) — Returning for an unprecedented third year to the fans and Convention that “started it all,” Walt Disney Pictures is pleased to present a very special, insider look at its upcoming “TRON: Legacy” at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International Convention. At 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, the panel presentation will be held in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. On the dais will be filmmakers and talent from the film, including director Joe Kosinski, producers Sean Bailey and Steven Lisberger as wells as cast members Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Michael Sheen and Bruce Boxleitner. The panel discussion, to be moderated by Patton Oswalt, is set to include exclusive glimpses of the film, as well as a Q & A involving all panel participants, along with special surprise guests.

It was at the 2008 Convention that the vision of a 21st century TRON was born. When VFX test footage was shown to a packed hall of incredibly surprised convention attendees, it was met with such an overwhelmingly positive response—becoming the “it” moment of the Convention—that the studio gave the film an enthusiastic green light. In 2009 “TRON: Legacy” returned to Comic-Con with an expanded presence and this year, the filmmakers and cast are back with never before seen visuals and “scoop” for the Convention fans who have been such an instrumental part of the story of “TRON: Legacy.”

Director Joe Kosinski comments: “When we made the teaser, we envisioned it as a sneak peek at the potential of this project. We set out to stay true to the characters, the vehicles, and the world established in the first film—then show its evolution. When it took off with the fans, we knew we were in the right place. Because they’ve been key to getting this story told, we’re back to keep them involved, and excited to finally present actual footage from the film to the audience that made it all possible.”

To add to the excitement of this extraordinary event, Disney will showcase an interactive TRON booth on the convention floor (located on aisle #3712), giving fans a first look at the all new “TRON: Legacy” inspired merchandise launching this fall. Capturing the action, light, and cool aesthetic style of the film, the display will include toys, electronics, collectibles, apparel, accessories, publishing and the “TRON: Evolution” video game from Disney Interactive Studios. Comic-Con exclusive products will also be on sale. Disney will also reveal exciting new mobile content at the event.

About “TRON: Legacy”

“TRON: Legacy” is a 3D action-packed adventure set in a digital world unlike anything captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Oscar® and Golden Globe® winner Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world’s leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the abandoned Flynn’s Arcade—that could have only come from his father—he finds himself pulled into a world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-or-death journey across a visually stunning universe—created by Kevin Himself—which has become far more advanced with never-before-imagined vehicles, weapons and landscapes, and a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.

Presented in Disney Digital 3Dâ„¢ and scored by Grammy Award®–winning electronic music duo Daft Punk, “TRON: Legacy” hits theaters on December 17, 2010.

JON STEWART RETURNS TO BEA STAGE WHERE HE WILL INTRODUCE CONDOLEEZZA RICE AND OTHERS!

Sarah Ferguson, John Grisham, Sara Gruen, and Christopher Hitchens are Among Authors Headlining Special Events
Norwalk, CT, March 4, 2010:  BookExpo America (BEA) has today announced that Jon Stewart will return to BEA in 2010 where he will be the Master of Ceremonies for the Author Breakfast on Thursday, May 27.  Mr. Stewart’s first appearance at BEA was in 2004 and his humor as well as his rapport with the audience is fondly remembered as a stand out moment at a BEA Author Breakfast.  Among other notable luminaries, Mr. Stewart will be introducing Condoleezza Rice who has written a family memoir which will be published in October, 2010.  The speaker program is a highlight of BEA activity and it brings considerable attention to new books by famous personalities and accomplished writers from the worlds of literature, film, politics, comedy and a range of other fields of endeavor.  The other speakers who will be featured in the special events program include Cory Doctorow, Sarah Ferguson, William Gibson, John Grisham, Sara Gruen, Christopher Hitchens, Patton Oswalt, Richard Peck, Mitali Perkins, and Mary Roach.

BEA will be taking place over two days this year, and it will occur in mid-week.  The dates for the Breakfasts and Lunch are: Children’s Author Breakfast, Wednesday, May  26; Adult Author Breakfast, Thursday, May 27; and Adult Author Lunch, Thursday, May 27.  Officials note that an Opening Night Reception is planned for Tuesday evening May 25 at 6pm, and the show’s traditional evening of entertainment (i.e. BEA’s “Saturday Night”) on behalf of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE) and the Association of American Publishers’ (AAP) Get Caught Reading Campaign, is also planned to take place on Tuesday, May 25.  It will occur at Town Hall at 9:00pm.  Details on these two events will be forthcoming in the near future.

“I am amazed by the exceptional array of talent and distinguished public figures who have made themselves available to speak at BEA,” notes Steven Rosato, Event Director for Book Expo America.  “We are incredibly fortunate to have these authors assembled at our show and I know that will be a great draw for BEA and will ensure that these events will sell out.  Above all, I am thankful to the publishers who support us, and who bring their authors to BEA so that we might all enjoy meeting them, and hearing what they have to say.   It’s a very unique and special opportunity for anyone who is part of the book industry and who attends BEA.”

Officials note that despite the fact that the convention will have one less Author Breakfast this year due to the shortened schedule, there will be more author programming than ever before.  After a successful debut last year, the Author Stages will return to the convention floor and a new stage has been added so that there will now be a Downtown Stage, an Uptown Stage and a Midtown Stage.  Programming for the Author Stages will be worked on and confirmed through the coming two months (March and April).  “Our focus remains on quality vs. quantity,” Rosato states.  “Certainly, the Author Breakfasts and Lunch are a reflection of the quality events that we can deliver based on the wealth of talent that is delivered to us from publishers.  The Author Stages proved to be a fantastic opportunity last year for showcasing authors from all walks of life in an intimate setting for booksellers and the media.  I know that we will have amazing content and dialogue on all three stages.  It will be jam packed!”
