NJ – Reading Without Walls Workshop

John Patrick Green and Sara Varon appear at Word Bookstore on Saturday, April 29th at 11:00 AM.

This event is part of Reading Without Walls, an annual nationwide reading program encouraging students to read books that they wouldn’t normally choose on their own. This means reading a broad variety of titles with different themes, diverse authors and content, formats, settings, characters, and subjects. This program is a challenge from the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Gene Luen Yang. To learn more about the program and how to participate, visit ReadingWithoutWalls.com.

John Patrick Green grew up on Long Island in New York and went to the School of Visual Arts for graphic design. He is the illustrator of the graphic novels Jax Epoch and the Quicken Forbidden and Teen Boat!, both with writer Dave Roman. He’s also worked on comics for Disney, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, Scholastic, and DC Comics. John lives in Brooklyn with zero cats and way too many LEGOs.

Sara Varon is a printmaker, graphic novelist, and children’s book author/illustrator living in Brooklyn. Her books include Odd Duck, Bake Sale, Robot Dreams, Chicken & Cat, and Chicken & Cat Clean Up. They have received many accolades–among others, Odd Duck was selected by Kirkus Reviews as one of the Best Children’s Books of 2013, Bake Sale was named a YALSA Great Graphic Novel for 2012, and Robot Dreams was on Oprah’s Kids’ Reading List in 2008. In 2013 Sara Varon was a recipient of the Maurice Sendak Fellowship.

Cecil Castellucci appears at Books of Wonder on Tuesday November 19, 2013 on 3:30 PM!

About The Program: STORYTIME WITH THE AUTHOR is a weekly storytime designed to connect young readers and listeners directly to the authors and artists who create the books they love. Each week we will invite an author or artist to read aloud from their books and other picture books that they love. They may also lead activities such as crafts or drawing.

Creating a bond between authors and readers is one of the most effective ways we know to build a lifelong love of reading. With that in mind, we are so excited to present this program, which we hope will provide a unique, inspiring, and stimulating experience for our youngest readers!

ABOUT OUR GUEST: Cecil Castellucci is an author of young adult novels, comic books, and the picture book, ODD DUCK.
