Harvard Book Store welcomes memoirist and Tony Award–winning actor ALAN CUMMING on Sunday, September 25th at 6:00 PM to discuss his latest book, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams: My Life in Stories and Pictures—a magical concoction of his mischievous, tender, whimsical, and debauched real-life adventures, told in his own words and pictures. Mr. Cumming will be joined in-conversation by WGBH’s JARED BOWEN.
About You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams:
Described by the New York Times as “a bawdy countercultural sprite” and named one of the most fun people in show business by Time magazine, Alan Cumming is a genuine quadruple threat—an internationally acclaimed, award-winning star of stage, television, and film, as well as a New York Times best-selling author whose real-life vivacity, wit, and charm shine through every page of his third book, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams. In these forty-five picture essays, Cumming recounts his real-life adventures (and often, misadventures), illustrated by his own equally entertaining photographs. From an awkward bonding session with Elizabeth Taylor to poignant stories about his family and friends to some harsh words of wisdom imparted by Oprah that make up the title of this collection, You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams is as eclectic, enchanting, and alive as its author.

In You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams, the light-hearted follow-up to his acclaimed Not My Father’s Son, Alan Cumming, a Tony and Olivier Award-winning actor, novelist, and activist, combines personal stories with his own photos to create a scrapbook of highlights from the off-stage portions of his life in show business. Told with wit and panache, these funny, insightful, and often self-deprecating tales of Cummings misadventures feature stars including Helen Mirren, Carrie Fisher, Oprah, and more.

Put David Sedaris and Glenn O’Brien in a blender and add a dash of New York and Hollywood gossip, and you wind up with Alan Cumming. In “You Gotta Get Bigger Dreams: And Other Stories,” Alan Cumming takes the reader on a wild journey of pithy and cheeky fun, presenting his real-life stories of debauchery during late night Hollywood parties, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and hilarious yet poignant memories of his life, family, and friends.
In this new book, he recounts hysterical and sometimes embarrassing encounters, from awkwardly entertaining Elizabeth Taylor at Carrie Fisher’s birthday party to being on a movie set with Helen Mirren and being mocked for wearing Croc sandals to making a friend’s day by chasing down Oprah at a glitzy gala for a prized photograph with her. These forty-five stories are humorous novellas, each featuring memorable photographs—many simply snapshots taken by Cumming—that document or illustrate the tale told.
