CA – Revenge of the Nerd Signing

Actor Curtis Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds, American Dad, Better Off Dead) signs his new book at Vroman’s Bookstore on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 7:00pm.

Risky Business. Revenge of the Nerds. Better Off Dead. Moonlighting. Supernatural. American Dad. New Girl. What do all of these movies and television shows have in common? Curtis Armstrong.

A legendary comedic second banana to a litany of major stars, Curtis is forever cemented in the public imagination as Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. A classically trained actor, Curtis began his incredible 40-year career on stage but progressed rapidly to film and television. He was typecast early and it proved to be the best thing that could have happened. But there’s more to Curtis’ story than that.

Born and bred a nerd, he spent his early years between Detroit, a city so nerdy that the word was coined there in 1951, and, improbably, Geneva, Switzerland. His adolescence and early adulthood was spent primarily between the covers of a book and indulging his nerdy obsessions. It was only when he found his true calling, as an actor and unintentional nerd icon, that he found true happiness. With whip-smart, self-effacing humor, Armstrong takes us on a most unlikely journey–one nerd’s hilarious, often touching rise to the middle. He started his life as an outcast and matured into…well, an older, slightly paunchier, hopefully wiser outcast. In Hollywood, as in life, that counts as winning the game.

OR – Revenge of the Nerd Signing

Actor Curtis Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds, American Dad, Better Off Dead) signs his new book at Powell’s Books on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 7:30pm.

A legendary comedic second banana, Curtis is forever cemented in the public imagination as Booger from Revenge of the Nerds – but there’s more to Curtis’ story than that. With whip-smart, self-effacing humor, Armstrong takes us on a most unlikely journey―one nerd’s hilarious, often touching rise to the middle.

CURTIS ARMSTRONG was born in Michigan in 1953. He divided his early years between Detroit—a town apparently so nerdy that the word “nerd” was coined there in 1949—and Geneva, Switzerland, which by comparison, wasn’t nerdy at all. Following a childhood spent mainly between the covers of books, Armstrong discovered the theatre. He studied at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rochester, Michigan, which led to a forty-plus year acting career that shows no signs of slowing. After eight years of stage work in New York and around the country, Armstrong was cast in his first film, Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise. It was the beginning of a string of classic comedy films and television shows, including Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, TV’s Moonlighting and, most significantly, Revenge of the Nerds, in which he played the iconic role of Booger.Since then Armstrong, a nerd icon himself has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows including, recently, Supernatural and New Girl. He co-created and co-hosted the hit comedy-reality show King of the Nerds, which brought his nerd narrative full circle. He is married to writer Elaine Aronson, and has one daughter, Lily.

ABOUT THE BOOK
What would you take? Imagine you were leaving for a new country, and could bring along only what would fit in a small suitcase. Which things would you choose to say to the world, “Hi there, this is me!”

New York Times bestselling author and award-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis, working with her longtime illustrator Laura Cornell, brings her whimsical verse to the subject of immigration and identity. In this picture book, various children—inspired by their remarkable teacher—talk about what they’d bring with them if they could only take one suitcase to their new home: photographs, a favorite book, grandfather’s beret. Which things do they love most? What best expresses who they are? At the end, the question is posed to the reader: “What would you take? Which things would say to the world, this is me!” The book ends with a pop-up suitcase, which the child can then fill with his or her favorite things. It opens with a teacher reading to her class… “My great-grandmother came from a far, distant place. She came on a boat with just this small case.” And ends with an exercise where the child reading would decide what of his or her own items would be packed into the provided suitcase if faced with needing to make that decision. The last spread is a pop up suitcase that can be filled!
