Mike Mignola appears at Meltdown Comics on Saturday March 22nd at 2:00 pm to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of HELLBOY!
March 2014 marks the twentieth anniversary of Mike Mignola’s career-defining release of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1. After the character’s somewhat humble beginnings as an eight-page feature in Dark Horse’s San Diego Comic Con Comics special, Seed of Destruction would begin the long life of the beloved “beast of the apocalypse.”
To celebrate, Dark Horse Comics is proclaiming March 22, 2014 as “Hellboy Day,” with events happening in comic shops around the country! Dark Horse is inviting our retail partners to celebrate with us, by offering up exclusive promotional materials, as well as ordering discounts on all Hellboy and BPRD backlist titles.
Additionally, Dark Horse will produce an all-new sampler comic featuring two classic Mignola tales: “The Ghoul” and “Another Day at The Office,” as well as two new stories by Mignola, Fabio Moon, and R. Sikoryak!
Dark Horse is also pleased to announce that Meltdown Comics and Collectibles in West Hollywood, CA will be hosting Mike Mignola on March 22! Look for more details to come on the event.

CAPS TO LAUNCH ART AUCTION FEATURING ORIGINAL WORKS BY MATT GROENING, JACK DAVIS, MIKE MIGNOLA, J. SCOTT CAMPBELL, ADAM HUGHES AND HUNDREDS MORE TO BENEFIT FELLOW CARTOONIST STAN SAKAI AND FAMILY
On Thursday, March 6, 2014, Southern California’s CAPS, the Comic Art Professional Society, will launch an ongoing series of eBay auctions of original comic art. Its goal is to raise funds for medical care for Sharon Sakai, the wife of respected cartoonist and longtime CAPS member Stan Sakai, creator of the samurai rabbit USAGI YOJIMBO. Sharon has been battling a debilitating brain tumor for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is currently at home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicine that costs more than the Sakai’s insurance covers. 100% of the proceeds of these auctions will go directly to Stan and Sharon Sakai to help pay their ongoing medical expenses.
The CAPS auctions will be conducted through eBay.com beginning on Thursday, March 6, with a new set of auctions every following Thursday. Each auction, sold under the seller name of “CAPSauction”, will be ten days in length with twenty to forty items in each set of auctions. The donations of original artwork and collectibles (including newly created art unique to this event, vintage comic book pages, comic strips, illustrations, animation art, limited edition statues, and IDW Artist’s editions books) number over three hundred with new items arriving every day.
Contributors include: Adam Hughes, Alex Maleev, Arthur Adams, Batton Lash, Eric Powell, Jan Duursema, Jerry Ordway, Jordi Bernet, Matt Groening, Michael Allred, Mike Mignola, Paul Gulacy, Sanjuliàn, Scott Shaw!, Jim Steranko, Tim Sale, William Stout, Bill Sienkiewicz, Cameron Stewart, Dan Brereton, Daniel Parsons, Dave Gibbons, Dean Yeagle, Doug Sneyd, Dustin Nguyen, Bill Morrison, Tone Rodriguez, Sergio Aragonés, Fabio Moon, Francisco Francavilla, Gene Ha, Geof Darrow, Gilbert Hernandez, Jack Davis, James O’Barr, Kevin Eastman, Jeff Lemire, Jeff Smith, Kazu Kibuishi, Liam Sharp, Tom Richmond, Michael Jantze, Olivia, Oscar Martin, Paul Chadwick, Richard Corben, Tom Mandrake, Walter Simonson, Charles Vess, Dan Spiegle, J. Scott Campbell and many more.
Many of the pieces featuring Usagi Yojimbo will appear in a new oversized hardcover book from Dark Horse, THE SAKAI PROJECT: ARTISTS CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS OF USAGI YOJIMBO, which will be released on July 23, 2014. All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai. Much of the custom Usagi Yojimbo art created for this book will also be sold as a part of CAPS’ online auctions.
These fund-raising auctions will be promoted through ComicArtFans.com, and the CAPS – COMIC ART PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY Facebook page where you will be able to see updated information such as when certain pieces will be auctioned.

The most amazing artists in the world have come together to celebrate thirty years of Stan Sakai’s marvelous samurai rabbit saga, Usagi Yojimbo, in a new oversized hardcover benefit book: The Sakai Project: Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of “Usagi Yojimbo”!
“It has been an absolute pleasure publishing Stan’s work over the years, and recently collaborating with him directly on 47 Ronin,” said Dark Horse’s president and founder, Mike Richardson. “With the thirtieth anniversary of his most beloved creation, Usagi, and in a time of need for Stan and his family, we are honored to publish this tribute to Stan and his work. We are donating all of the proceeds to Stan and his wife, Sharon. We hope you will join us in honoring one of the comics industry’s shining lights.”
The participating artists bring their own interpretations and their own styles to the subject, making this book a one-of-a-kind treasure.
The Sakai Project is produced in association with the Comic Art Professional Society (CAPS). All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai.

Doors at 7:00pm, show at 7:30pm
Inspired by the Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic exhibition, the Modern School of Film (MSF) is thrilled to collaborate with EMP on the ongoing Film:Fantasy Series, imploring master artists to choose films that define fantasy as only cinema is able. The Modern School of Film (MSF) is a film training and study institute based in New York and Los Angeles that combines in-class instruction with film:master screenings with the belief that you don’t need to be in school to be a student.
Mike Mignola: Legendary comic-artist Mike Mignola opens the series with Moby Dick (1956) directed by John Huston (screenplay by Ray Bradbury). Based on Herman Melville’s novel, Huston’s Moby Dick is the story of the sole survivor of a lost whaling ship who relates the tale of his captain’s self-destructive obsession to hunt a giant creature from the ocean depths. Starring Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab and Richard Basehart as Ishmael.
Best-known as the award-winning creator/writer/artist of Hellboy, Mike Mignola was also visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on both Hellboy and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army films. He also co-authored (with Christopher Golden) two novels Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City. Mignola lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

Mike Mignola’s Hellboy, one of the best-loved comic creations of the past two decades, will be showcased in the acclaimed Artist’s Edition format from IDW! Mignola’s Hellboy, the star of comics and screen, will be a welcome addition to the rapidly growing Artist’s Edition library, IDW’s award-winning imprint. Featuring scans of original art in their rawest form, Artist’s Editions enable fans to experience the next best thing to owning a favorite artist’s originals.
”Since the beginning, I’ve been pretty much in awe of the Artist’s Edition series IDW has been doing,” said Mignola, “I’m thrilled (and actually a little honored) to have a Hellboy book appear in that series.”
Collecting the first five issues of Hellboy in Hell, where, after making the ultimate sacrifice, Hellboy must confront what Hell has in store for him. Alone, he faces the demons of his past as Mignola reveals the dark secrets that could define Hellboy’s legacy. Additionally, several shorter works will be included in this volume.
“I can’t thank Mike enough for allowing us to do this book,” said Artist’s Editions editor Scott Dunbier, “His stories are classics and it’s a joy to be able to pour over his art.”
Mignola’s enduring creation has established a devoted following through the Hellboy series and the related tie-ins B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, and Lobster Johnson, all published by Dark Horse Comics. Hellboy has been adapted into two successful major motion pictures by director Guillermo Del Toro and three animated features. Mike Mignola and Hellboy are staples of modern comics and IDW is ready to shake the Right Hand of Doom!
What is an Artist’s Edition?
AN ARTIST’S EDITION PRESENTS COMPLETE STORIES WITH EACH PAGE SCANNED FROM THE ACTUAL ORIGINAL ART.
While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.
IDW is an award-winning publisher of comic books, graphic novels and trade paperbacks, based in San Diego, California. Renowned for its diverse catalog of licensed and independent titles, IDW publishes some of the most successful and popular titles in the industry, including: Hasbro’s The TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE and MY LITTLE PONY; Paramount’s Star Trek; Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; 2000AD’s Judge Dredd; The Rocketeer; Toho’s Godzilla; Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons; HBO’s True Blood; and the Eisner-Award winning Locke & Key series, created by best-selling author Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez. IDW is also home to the Library of American Comics imprint, which publishes classic comic reprints, and Yoe! Books, a partnership with Yoe! Studio.
IDW’s critically- and fan-acclaimed series are continually moving into new mediums. Currently, Warner Brothers and Barry Sonnenfeld are attached to adapt LORE into a feature film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Disney are creating a feature film based on World War Robot, with Michael Bay‘s Platinum Dunes and Sony bringing Zombies vs. Robots to film.
