WonderCon Announces First Slate of Special Guests for 2012

Press Release:

WonderCon Announces First Slate of Special Guests

Popular Comics Convention Relocates to Anaheim, California for 2012

The Goon by Eric Powell and Mike MignolaANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 27, 2011 — WonderCon, part of the Comic-Con International (CCI) family of nonprofit comics conventions, today announced its first group of special guests. Sergio Aragones (cartoonist, Groo, MAD, Sergio Aragones Funnies), Matt Fraction (writer, Invincible Iron Man, Casanova, Fear Itself, Mighty Thor), Mike Mignola (writer/artist/creator, Hellboy, B.P.R.D.), and J. Michael Straczynski (writer, Superman: Earth One) are among the 11 newly announced special guests to appear at the 2012 event held in Anaheim, California, March 16-18.

Coming off its most successful year in 2011, WonderCon, traditionally held in San Francisco, is relocating to a new venue next year. Due to ongoing renovations at the event’s usual location, WonderCon organizers were forced to search for an alternate site for 2012.

“Because of its consistently stellar list of special guests, schedule of programs, and exhibitors WonderCon continues to be one of the most popular comics conventions in the country for fans of comic books, sci-fi, and fantasy,” commented David Glanzer, WonderCon spokesperson and director of marketing and public relations for parent company CCI. “We are confident the move to Anaheim will bring the same level of excitement, if not more enthusiasm, for one of the biggest and best genre-related shows in the country.”

Originally considered a regional show for Northern California, in recent years WonderCon has so closely resembled its sister show in San Diego in terms of guests and programming that it has become a full-fledged national show attracting attendees and media from all over the country and across the globe, so much so that this year some are calling it “Anaheim Comic-Con.”

Additional guests announced today include Art Adams (artist, Longshot, Monkeyman & O’Brien, Tom Strong, Hulk); Mark Evanier  (comics and TV writer, Blackhawk, The DNAgents, Crossfire the animated Garfield); Michael Golden (artist, The ‘Nam, Micronauts, Bucky O’Hare); Steve Niles (writer/creator, 30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre, Mystery Society); Eric Powell (writer/artist/creator, The Goon); Bob Schreck (editor-in-chief, Legendary Comics); and Fiona Staples (artist, Mystery Society, SAGA).

Steranko, Linsner, and Horn Added to Fan Days October 2011 Event

Jim Steranko

Press Release:

Jim Steranko, Joe Linsner, Greg Horn and more added to FAN DAYS
October 8-9, 2011

Hot off the heels of the highly successful Dallas Comic Con this past May, the same promoters have assembled another impressive guest list for the October 8-9 event called FAN DAYS.

Comic book legend Jim Steranko will make a rare appearance at the event, his first visit to the Dallas area in almost two decades.  Steranko is praised by comic book fans and creators for his surrealistic style incorporated in the Silver and Bronze Age with Marvel flagship characters like Nick Fury and Captain America.  He would later enter the publishing field with movie magazines like Prevue, and even designed characters and concepts for major films like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (yes, Jim designed Indiana Jones) and Francis Ford Coppola’s BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA.  This is a rare opportunity for fans to meet the groundbreaking creator in person.  He’s been added along with recent comic book creators Joe Linsner (creator and artist of DAWN) and Greg Horn (Marvel cover artist).

Other guests for the multi-faceted event already include media names like Billy Dee Williams (STAR WARS), George Takei (STAR TREK), Julie Benz (DEXTER), and Jaime King (SIN CITY), along with comic creators like Herb Trimpe, Michael Golden, Dave Dorman, Terry Moore, James O’Barr, Kerry Gammill and more.

FAN DAYS Event Manager Mark Walters was quoted to say “The Dallas Comic Con earlier this year was a way of getting our feet wet with the brand new Irving Convention Center, but Fan Days is going to be a somewhat definitively diverse event for the fan community – offering a wider selection of guests and events during and after the show, this will be one of the most incredible fan functions the DFW area has ever seen.”

All guests are attending both days (unless otherwise noted on the website), and some guests do charge fees for autographs. General Admission, Priority and VIP admission passes will be available.  For all the latest info check out http://fandays.com

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – May 10, 2011 - They say that a classic never goes out of style and that statement couldn’t be truer of the creators just added to the line-up of this year’s show! We are proud to announce the addition of Nick Cardy, Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez, Kevin Nowlan, and Michael Golden to the growing guest list for the 12th annual Baltimore Comic-Con, taking place August 20-21, 2011.

Finally, Michael Golden returns to the Baltimore Comic-Con for another year. Having worked on dozens of books in his 30+ year career, Golden is the co-creator of both Marvel Comics’ Rogue and Continuity Comics’ Bucky O’Hare.

“We are so excited to be adding these four creators to our guest list,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Their work in the world of comics inspired an entire generation of artists. They are legends in every sense of the word and truly put the ‘class’ in classic.”

Press Release:

Laisse les bon temps rouler!
Michael Golden Art Part of VIP Pack for Wizard New Orleans!

New Orleans–The Paris of the South, The Big Easy, The Crescent City! Vampire Central! –New Orleans is known by many names… so let’s add host city of Louisiana’s biggest comic-con to ‘em, as Wizard New Orleans makes a riotous debut in just a few weeks!

Michael GoldenTo make the event even more festive, renowned artist Michael Golden has been tapped by the folks at Wizard World to provide a limited VIP print for attendees at the show! Limited to 1,000 copies!

Michael first broke onto the comic scene working on such DC Comics titles as Mister Miracle and Batman Family. In 1978, he made a splash with his work on The Micronauts. He drew a number of Marvel series throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Doctor Strange, She-Hulk, the Howard the Duck black-and-white comics magazine, and the highly lauded, The ‘Nam, as well as G.I. Joe, ROM, Nomad, and The Saga of Crystar, Vigilante, Wonder Woman and far too much to mention here!

As a artist/writer/creator Michael Golden, is co-creator of the X-men’s Rogue character, Spartan X and Bucky O’Hare” and is known worldwide for his groundbreaking story work, and is counted as one of the best cover designers and storytellers in the business.

“….unless you can actually draw yourself, it is very difficult to understand the exact mind-blowing impossibility of what he does,” said writer/artist Larry Hama, of Golden’s work.

“Michael blithely puts down on paper exactly what he sees in his head. It’s like he’s got a cosmic opaque projector that shoots a laser beam from his brain through the kundalini eye in his forehead straight down onto the drawing surface where all he has to do is trace it,” continues Hama. “The result is hard-edged and fully realized in every way. No fuzzy impressions here. No using the side of the pencil. No squiggly space-filling lines blocked in on automatic pilot. To paraphrase Neal Adams (who was referring to Golden), there is not a single millimeter of line on the page that is not directed by conscious thought.”

Recent books covering the colorful life and amazing art of Michael Golden include a Manga version of the “Bucky O’Hare” series, created with Hama, as well as the top selling art retrospective “Excess: The Art of Michael Golden,” written by Renee Witterstaetter, which sold out and has gone into a second printing, as well as his recent sketchbook “Heroes and Villains,” and the just released NEW sketchbook, “MORE Heroes and Villains.” In addition, Woodcrest Productions/Eva Ink has also just released a two part candid DVD on Michael and his career, entitled “Creator Chronicles: Michael Golden,” featuring an extensive interview and tutorial with the creator.

Michael has served as an Editor at DC Comics as well as Senior Art Director at Marvel Comics, and has worked on scores of movie production projects, some currently in development. His art has been the focus of gallery shows in places as diverse as Gijon, Barcelona, New York, Antwerp and Brussels, while his class on storytelling has been conducted from Spain to Brussels to France to Canada to the United States… and most recently China.

Be looking for future projects as well, including the upcoming “Spartan X Trade paperback!” And Michael’s work on “Spawn 200.”As well as some secret projects for IDW and DC Comics.
