Corinna Parks always imagined writing a successful novel and leading the ideal life of an author. After graduation however, she moved to a big city and took a job at an advertising agency (to pay off her student loans). Somehow, now, she’s worked in the same office for five years, and the only thing she has written is copy. She longs for companionship other than her cat, she’s dissatisfied with her job, and she’s numbed by the monotony of a life experienced through a series of screens. Her only thrill, her way to feel more alive, comes whenever she shoplifts a magazine from the corner store near her apartment. She knows there must be something more to life, but the question is how to find it.
Michael Cho is an artist, designer and illustrator, well known for his inimitable Toronto cityscapes and offbeat superhero illustrations. One of his stories was included in The Best American Comics 2010 and his artwork is showcased in Rabindranath Maharaj’s The Amazing Absorbing Boy. Shoplifter is his first graphic novel. He lives in Toronto.

BATMAN BLACK & WHITE is the next iteration of the critically-acclaimed, highly-influential series of black and white stories featuring The Caped Crusader, and written and illustrated by some of the biggest names in contemporary comics. Michael Cho is a fantastic Toronto illustrator and comics creator. Michael Cho appears at Type Books on Wednesday May 23, 2012 from 6pm – 8pm.
After a day-one, sell out debut at TCAF, Michael Cho’s Back Alleys and Urban Landscapes gets its own book launch! The launch also features a small gallery show and sale of roughly a dozen paintings from the book.
Back Alleys and Urban Landscapes shines with lovingly rendered details, from expletive-filled graffiti splayed across backyard fences to the graceful twists of power lines over a bend in the road. Back Alleys and Urban Landscapes meanders through the city, functioning as a sort of caught-on-paper psychogeographical Jane’s Walk. With each season’s change, different color schemes become dominant, and a whole range of moods and moments are articulated. Cho lets the reader visit his city as a virtual flaneur, lingering equally over dilapidated sheds and well-groomed gardens in a dazzling tribute to the urban environs. Back Alley and Urban Landscapes is Cho’s first book and is published by Drawn & Quarterly.
