MD – Free Comic Book Day 2015

sfruit-fcbdPress Release:

Free Comic Book Day 2015 is this Saturday at Cards, Comics & Collectibles – Baltimore County’s Premiere Comic Book Store and the Official News Source of the Baltimore Comic-Con! You don’t want to miss our amazing guests, giveaways, events, and FREE COMICS!

The full-day event kicks off with an awesome line-up of creators appearing at the store! Mark Waid, J.G. Jones, and Steve Conley will be all signing autographs at the store throughout the day.

The multiple Harvey and Eisner Award-winning Mark Waid has been the voice behind numerous issues, mini-series, and title runs that have resonated throughout comics fandom and the creative community alike. His acclaimed runs and series include DC Comics’ The Flash, Kingdom Come, The Kingdom, JLA: Year One, JLA, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Superman: Birthright, Marvel Comics’ Captain America, Fantastic Four, Amazing Spider-Man, The Indestructible Hulk, Princess Leia, and Daredevil, BOOM! Studios’ Incorruptible and Irredeemable, Archie Comics’ The Fox, and Empire, originally published by Gorilla Comics and later by DC Comics. He also went on to become Editor-in-Chief and then Chief Creative Officer at BOOM! Studios, while continuing to work on freelance assignments for other publishers. Waid is one of the principals behind Thrillbent Comics, a digital comics initiative, where he also publishes titles such as In the Pi of the Beholder, Luther, Cthulhu Calls, If You’re So Smart, and Insufferable. He is also featured in the 2015 FCBD title Dark Circle Comics from Archie.

Accomplished penciller, painter, and writer J.G. Jones has contributed his deft touch to a broad variety of titles and publishers. From Black Widow and Marvel Boy at Marvel Comics to Final Crisis and Wonder Woman: The Hiketeia and all covers for 52 at DC Comics, as well as Wanted at Top Cow, his work stands out among his peers.

Bloop by ConleyAward-winning designer, illustrator, and cartoonist Steve Conley has worked on such notable comics as Star Trek: Year Four (IDW), Michael Chabon’s Amazing Adventures of the Escapist (Dark Horse Comics), and JLA-Z (DC Comics). Conley, who is also the creator of Astounding Space Thrills and the all-ages series Bloop (www.bloopstree.com), will be signing and sketching all day.

Jones and Waid will be releasing Strange Fruit, a fully painted title, in July of 2015 from BOOM! Studios, and Cards, Comics & Collectibles is amazingly fortunate to be able to offer a limited edition print from BOOM! Studios available only at our store to the first 500 people.

“Free Comic Book Day has grown to become such an important event – not just for retailers, creators, and fans – but for the comics industry as a whole,” said Marc Nathan, owner of Cards, Comics & Collectibles. “We are delighted to have Mark, J.G., and Steve signing here! Add another fantastic slate of free comics, and this year is going to be our biggest yet!

Besides giving away free comic books, the store will have free Baltimore Comic-Con t-shirts to give away as well, and will offer 50% off modern back issues, trade paperbacks, and hardcovers.

When the powerful Darkseid and his massive, relentless forces invade Earth, several previously unaligned superheroes—misunderstood and, in some cases, hunted by the authorities—discover that the only way to fend off the attack will be to work together as a cohesive unit. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Shazam, and, in his origin story, Cyborg combine their talents in an all-out battle to save the planet. Based on the 2012 graphic novel Justice League: Origin by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee, Justice League: War provides a glimpse into the world before the Justice League was created, and offers the initial animated incarnation of DC Entertainment’s “The New 52.”

The cast features Jason O’Mara (Terra Nova, Life on Mars) as Batman, Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs) as Flash, Justin Kirk (Weeds) as Green Lantern, Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds) as Cyborg, Michelle Monaghan (Mission Impossible III, Gone Baby Gone) as Wonder Woman, Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory, Dollhouse, Serenity) as Superman, Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) as Shazam, and Rocky Carroll (NCIS) as Silas Stone. On the villainous side, Steve Blum (Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox) provides the voice of Darkseid, and Bruce Thomas (Legally Blonde, Army of Darkness) gives voice to Desaad.

NYC – Dare2Draw w/ Phil Jimenez

Artist Phil Jimenez appears at Society of Illustrators on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 6:00pm until 9:30pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

About Phil Jimenez:

At an early age, Phil Jimenez learned of the world of comics through his love of Star Wars, leading him into Marvel Comics series based on the film. In addition, he was a big fan of the Super Friends and Wonder Woman TV show (soon to become a big fan of her comic version, thanks to George Perez’s post-crisis re-launch).

Attending Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts, Phil developed the skills he needed to become a comic book artist, being picked by Neal Pozner to draw a two-part Cyborg story in Showcase Œ93. A few of Phil’s more well known works are Fairest, Team Titans, Tempest, Guy Gardner: Warrior, Robin, Invisibles, New X-Men, and is very well known for his work on Wonder Woman, JLA/Titans: Technis Imperative, and his many pin-ups (notably: numerous Secret Files and Origins) and group splashes including the Justice League, Legion of Super-Heroes, and DC One-Million. Jimenez is currently at work on a creator-owned DC title for their Vertigo line called “Otherworld.”

Phil would also act as the stand-in for Tobey Maguire during the costume-designing scene in the 2002 Spider-Man feature film. But, in addition to his excellent talent for visual art, Phil is an accomplished writer as well thanks in large part to the man who not only hired him, but also taught him to write, draw, and love passionately, Neal Pozner. Unfortunately, Neal passed away in 1994 after contracting the HIV virus.
