On Saturday, April 14th, starting at noon SIX of this year’s seven Newbery & Caldecott medal winners and honorees will come together at Books of Wonder for a talent-filled event. You and your children are invited to an afternoon featuring everything from wordless picture books to wonderful middle grade books you will not want to put down. The American Library Associationeach year selects the finest picture books and novels published in America to receive the Caldecott and Newbery Medals and Honors. We are overjoyed and honored to be able to bring these celebrated and talented authors and artists together for you to experience the best in children’s books. Joining us will be author JACK GANTOS, winner of the Newbery medal for Dead End in Norvelt, the story of an entirely true and wildly fictional, endlessly surprising two months in 1962 with a kid named Jack Gantos. CHRIS RASCHKA winner of the Caldecott medal for A Ball For Daisy, a wordless picture book about a dog who loves her bright red ball and what happens when another dog accidentally pops it. Raschka’s brilliant ink, watercolor, and gouache illustrations convey this simple story as eloquently as any words could. Author, artist, and beloved cartoonist PATRICK McDONNELL will be here for Me…Jane his Caldecott Honor Book, which brings to the inspiring childhood of the little girl who would grow up to be beloved naturalist Jane Goodall. Author and artist JOHN ROCCO will share Blackout hisCaldecott Honor Book, detailing how a family comes together a hot summer night in the city when the power goes out! Told with spectacular illustrations and few words, Rocco captures the magic and mystery of a big city and the joys of family. Author and artist LANE SMITH will present Grandpa Green his Caldecott Honor Book, in which a young boy tells us all about his beloved, though sometimes forgetful great-grandfather, as he takes us through the garden where memories are handed down in the fanciful shape of topiary trees and imagination keeps alive those things that otherwise might be forgotten. And lastly, author and artist EUGENE YELCHIN will share his middle grade debut novel Breaking Stalin’s Nose, his Newbery Honor Book, about Sasha, a young boy growing up in the heart of Soviet Russia during the Cold War told in simple and masterful first person voice. Beginning at noon the authors and artists will share their acclaimed books, take questions from the audience and then sign copies of all their wonderful titles. Ages 3 and up. Saturday, April 14th, 12-2pm. We look forward to seeing all of you from the NYC area at this wonderful event.
