ksd-pd

Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick appears on Wednesday April 30 at the Portland TFAW from 6 to 9 p.m. to celebrate Pretty Deadly, her hit from Image Comics series co-created with Emma Ríos, Stop by the Pretty Deadly Volume 1 signing to purchase the first collected graphic novel and enjoy free food and beer (those 21+ with ID).

Kelly Sue DeConnick is one of the most prominent writers in comics today, with acclaimed runs on Avengers Assemble, Captain Marvel, and Ghost. Pretty Deadly, DeConnick’s fantasy western with artist Emma Ríos (Doctor Strange, Osborn), debuted in October 2013 to stellar reviews, and immediately sold out on release date.

Pretty Deadly Volume 1 presents the collected opening arc of Kelly Due DeConnick and Emma Ríos’ surprise-hit series, which marries the magical realism of Sandman with the western brutality of Preacher. Death’s daughter rides the wind on a horse made of smoke and her face bears the skull marks of her father. Her origin story is a tale of retribution as beautifully lush as it is unflinchingly savage!

Pretty Deadly Volume 1 will be available for purchase for just $9.99. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to meet one of the hottest writers in comics April 30 at the Portland TFAW!

Abstract: Comics can be defined in many ways. They are art works that create aesthetic experiences for their readers, cultural objects reflecting the time and place where they are produced, and commodities with a value on the market. But they are also social objects. They are made, read, and talked about by people who exist in a relatively stable set of institutions and relationships. This lecture addresses some of the possibilities and problems of a social-scientific approach to comics, placing them in the context not only of the “comics world” but also of a wider social world of geeks, nerds, and fans.
