RETCon Hosts Inaugural Convention This Weekend

The inaugural RetCon will be held this weekend on August 12 and 13, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Bailey Auditorium in Chicago.

RetCon is a new Chicago comic book convention devoted to fantastic comics. While other comic conventions have shifted to focus on pop culture, RetCon brings the comic book back to the forefront. The comic book community is filled with diverse, up-and- coming writers and artists who are not currently featured in the mainstream comic industry. RetCon is committed to representing diverse creators.

This convention is perfect for comic book lovers who are interested in having meaningful conversations about the classics and want to learn more about the diverse voices entering the comic book space. The event will feature insightful panels, live entertainment, and a plethora of talented creators showcasing their latest work.

12:00PM – 1:30PM: Join us for a panel discussion on which comics are great reads for those new to comics and finding the best ways to dive in.

The State of Things
1:30PM – 3:00PM: Join DOOMROCKET founder Jarrod Jones, Molly Jane Kremer along with guests Gene Ha, Megan Hutchinson, Ashley A. Woods, and Oliver Sava as they discuss the current state of comics.

Acrobatica Infiniti
4:00PM – 4:30PM: Imagine if you will, a world where circus meets fandom; Cosplay meets acrobatics; and world-class performing artists bring to life your wildest fantasies. At AI Circus, entertainment and fantasy collide in mid-air.

Comic Book Trivia
4:30PM – 5:30PM: Are you ready to test your knowledge of comic books? We’ll see about that.

Sunday August 13th

Telling History Through Sequential Art
12:00PM – 1:15PM: Telling history through sequential requires multiple skillsets—all of which can be easily expressed in a fun environment.

Telling History Through Sequential Art 
1:15PM – 2:30pm: An epic journey through the history of comic book movies with your hosts James Thompson and Ruben Rosario, as they discuss Superman II.

Comic Book Trivia
2:30PM – 3:30PM: Are you ready to test your knowledge of comic books? We’ll see about that.

Art Baltazar, Jeff Balke, and Justin Castaneda sign on May 7, 2011 for Free Comic Book Day!

Art Baltazar – Artist and writer currently working for DC Comics who started with a self-published comic book called The Cray-Baby Adventures. His other work includes Gyro-Man, Captain Camel and the Space Chicken, Jimmy Dydo, Lunar Lizard, Meteor Mite, Patrick the Wolf Boy, a monthly comic strip called GORILLA GORILLA! in Disney Adventures Magazine and, his most recent work for Platinum Studios, the graphic novel Big Amoeba.

Now he works at DC Comics as artist and co-writer on the Eisner Award winning comic Tiny Titans, co-writer on Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam!, and also works on the comic book adaptation of the Young Justice TV series (which has an FCBD version this year) and Little Archie.

Jeff Balke – Currently coloring for Zenescope Entertainment (Grimm Fairy Tales, Tales from Wonderland, Charmed) will be signing for fans.

Justin Castaneda – Author of the When I was Little… book series will be doing sketches and signing for fans.
