NYC – Black is the Color Signing

bicGraphic novelist Julia Gfrörer signs at The Strand on January 15th from 7:00PM – 8:00PM!

Join us for an exclusive evening with Julia Gfrörer, author and artist of the soul-darkening, seafaring, ridiculously awesome new graphic novel Black is the Color, out with Fantagraphics! Called “moving” by The Comics Journal, Black is the Color is the sorrowful tale of an unfortunate sailor’s abandonment, and his melancholy meeting of a mermaid named Eulalia.

Filled with cutting humor and poignant, artful images, Black is the Color is sure to become a 2014 favorite. Currently based in Portland, Julia’s work has appeared in Thickness, Arthur Magazine, Study Group Magazine, and Best American Comics.

As Julia’s biography on her personal site thorazos.net espouses, “her last name rhymes with despair, and her heart is black as jet.” Come escape a bleak winter chill in our cozy rare book rooms for a night of comic shop talk!

Buy a copy of Black is the Color or a $15 Strand gift card in order to attend this event. All options admit one person. Please note that payment is required for all online event orders at the time of checkout. The event will be located in the Strand’s 3rd floor Rare Book Room at our store at 828 Broadway at 12th Street.

Julia Gfrörer appears at Floating World Comics on Thursday, September 6th from 6-10pm

Press Release:

This September we are proud to host an art exhibit and book release party with one of our favorite local artists, Julia Gfrörer. The month long art exhibit will include Julia’s original comic pages and illustrations.

Julia will also debut her latest comic, the first chapter of Black Is The Color, recently nominated for an Ignatz award. This new book is about cruelty, sarcasm, loneliness, gay sailors, lactating mermaids, and salty fluids of all kinds. You could read it for free at www.studygroupcomics.com, but probably not in the bathtub (which is the best place to read it).

This book will be published by Thuban Press in September 2012, and it is 32 pages long and measures 5.5″x8.5″. It contains intense imagery and is intended for mature readers only.

Bio info:

Julia Gfrörer is a letterpress printer and Ignatz-nominated artist who was born at 1:10 am on Sunday, September 12, 1982 in Concord, NH. She has a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, and currently lives in a haunted apartment in Portland, Oregon. She is a splendid young woman equipped with sharp teeth, roughly 463 freckles on her left hand and an imposing tangle of shining bright orange hair. When not obsessively drawing she also enjoys listening to hip hop, reading aloud, and researching things to be sad about. Her latest comic, Black is the Color, is updated every Wednesday on the Study Group Comics site.
