Comic Con Revolution Announces Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award

Press Release:

Iconic comic book artist Joe Kubert—and his commitment to teaching the next generation of comic book creators—will be honored with a major new award and two scholarship programs announced today. The first ever Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award will be awarded at the second annual Comic Con Revolution, to be held May 19 & 20 at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, CA.

The Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award is designed to recognize outstanding comic book creators who exemplify both Joe Kubert’s artistic talent and his commitment to nurturing the comic book community. In addition, the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship is being established by Atomic Crush Events for first and second year students of The Kubert School, while the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will help graduates begin their career. The Kubert School will determine the recipient of the scholarship and jumpstart project based on merit and honors. The recipient of the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will be named by the school at this year’s graduation and the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship will go into effect next year, allowing students to apply for the scholarship. The award and scholarship program were announced by The Kubert School in tandem with Atomic Crush Events, which runs Comic Con Revolution and will host the annual Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award Ceremony.

“With the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller and Jumpstart Project, Atomic Crush Events has not only shown their commitment to building and investing in future creators for our industry but ultimately their love for the medium and their drive to have it not only succeed but thrive,” said Andy Kubert. “Thank you so much for this endeavor.”

“Joe Kubert was an incredible talent and his impact on the industry both on and off the page really can’t be overstated,” said Atomic Crush Events Partner and Co-Founder Mike Scigliano. “This annual award and scholarship program will honor Joe’s legacy and help nurture the next generation of comic book creators.” The award will be presented annually at Comic Con Revolution Ontario.

The recipient of the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship will receive a one-time scholarship. Funding for the first annual Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship is provided by matching contributions from Atomic Crush Events, GeekChic Promotions, Storm King Comics and Superfan Promotions. Interested individuals and companies can also contribute to the scholarship program. The scholarship recipients will be announced later this year.

The recipient of the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will receive an artist alley table at any of the Comic Con Revolution events for one year and credit with SGX Print to create a pop-up banner and a limited print run of comic or art books. Storm King Comics’ Sandy King Carpenter will review the winning graduates’ portfolio, and Superfan Promotions will consult the winner of the award on how to best promote their work.

“Mike Scigliano and Atomic Crush Events have come up with an amazing opportunity for our grads,” said Adam Kubert. “They really care about our industry and helping out young creators. I couldn’t think of a better or more creative way to jumpstart a young artist’s career than the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project. My Dad was the ultimate storyteller and I know the student that receives this award will work to be one as well.”

Widely beloved and acknowledged as one of the greatest comic book artists, Joe Kubert is most frequently associated with his work on Hawkman and Sgt Rock for DC Comics, his illustrations of Tarzan, and his gripping war stories. As The New York Times wrote after his death in 2012, “Mr. Kubert was often described as a war artist, but as he made clear in interviews and in his work, it was far more accurate to call him an antiwar artist. His distinctive visual style—raw, powerful and unstinting in emotional immediacy—was ideally suited to capturing the brutality of battle, and capture it he did, over more than a half-century.”

In 1976, Kubert and his wife Muriel established The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, NJ. Today, The Kubert School is the country’s only accredited trade school for comic-book artists, offering students a comprehensive three-year program. The first graduating class of 1978 included bestselling Swamp Thing artist Stephen R. Bissette, Tarzan artist Thomas Yeates, and Rick Vetch, creator of The One. Alumni include artists Kevin Colden, Amanda Conner, Shane Davis, Jan Duursema, Scott Kolins, Steve Lieber, Alex Maleev, Tom Mandrake, Rags Morales, Tom Raney, Bart Sears, Eric Shanower, and Timothy Truman; writer and inker Karl Kesel, Eisner award-nominated Jared K. Fletcher; acclaimed colorist Matt Hollingsworth; DC Comics VP of Manufacturing Administration Nick Napolitano, and Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito. Current faculty include his sons, the bestselling artists Adam and Andy Kubert, Mike Chen, Jan Duursema, and others.

The Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award event will be held at Comic Con Revolution on Saturday May 19 at 5:30 in Ballroom B in the Ontario Convention Center. More information about the award and the convention, visit and follow the convention on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.

Comments Off on Kevin Brogan’s Harvey Awards Speech on Joe Kubert at Baltimore Comic-Con 2012

Joe Kubert HI Award

Via Hero Initiative:

Many at the 2012 Harvey Awards ceremony at Baltimore Comic-Con were touched by the speech Hero Initiative volunteer Kevin Brogan gave to introduce the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award on September 8, 2012. Some were moved to tears. We’ve been asked by many to share the speech, and with Kevin’s kind permission, it’s presented here:

As many of you know, Hero Initiative is dedicated to helping creators in need of financial assistance or dealing with medical issues. At the Harveys, we honor outstanding creators with two awards: the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Dick Giordano Humanitarian Award. But if you can indulge me for a moment…

When I was young, I read a book titled A Day No Pigs Would Die. It was the story of a pig farmer and his 10-year-old son. It went on for 300 pages, but the title was an allusion to the father dying of a heart attack, and the day of his funeral. On that day, in this one-industry town, the slaughterhouse shut down, the packing district emptied out, and Cannery Row closed as seemingly everyone turned out for the father’s funeral. On that day, “No Pigs Would Die.” The boy learned the value of his father and what made him such a great man to his friends and peers.

I suspect that on August 12, when we heard the sad news of Joe Kubert’s passing, the pens and pencils were place silently down on the drawing boards. It became “A Day No Comic Books Were Created,” as we all reflected on the greatness of this artist and his legend.

I was truly looking forward to seeing him again this weekend. I will miss him.

May God bless his family. That’s my eulogy.

Jim McLauchlin reminds me that I am Irish, and I need to celebrate the life and not mourn the passing. So let’s get back to the awards.

I was working on my notes for the Giordano Humanitarian Award when I heard the sad news. I sent this introduction as condolence to Adam and Andy Kubert. I was asked to read it as I wrote.

I met Joe Kubert through the Hero Initiative back in our early days. He was very kind to this eager fan behind the booth.

It was such a treat for me to meet him. As a would-be artist, he is an inspiration to me. And the day he reviewed my art and told me that I had talent of telling a story validated my childhood passion. Through the years at conventions, I had the chance to work and speak with Joe often. And in 2007, I was honored to provide the introduction for Joe Kubert as he won the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award.

But today we honor him again for his humanitarian efforts.

For me, as a military man and sailor who has seen life throughout the world, Joe’s effort in telling the tale of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943 in his book Yossel, or the story of members of a special forces operation in Dong Xoia, Vietnam 1965, or the horror of genocide just a generation ago in Fax from Sarajevo all depict the compassion of a man and his commitment to the truth, using his medium to tell the tale the way only he can. What the reporters would not tell or news stations could not show, Joe captured in his art to let the world know the true reality of heroism.

I spoke with Mr. Kubert often of these books and my military experience. I am privileged to have conversed with him at such a personal level.

And tonight, Hero Initiative is honored to award Joe Kubert the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award, where Joe, through his true-to-life stories, is Changing Comics One Day at a Time.

Accepting on behalf of the Kubert Family, Paul Levitz…

Hero Awards Baltimore

Press Release:

Lifetime Achievement and Humanitarian Awards given out at 2012 Harvey Awards ceremony

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 9, 2012) – The Hero Initiative, the charitable organization dedicated to helping veteran comic creators in medical or financial need, has honored two of comics’ most beloved personalities with its 2012 awards. John Romita Jr. is the recipient of Hero Initiative’s Lifetime Achievement Award, while Joe Kubert was named the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year.

Romita celebrates 35 years as an artist at Marvel Comics this year. His Marvel debut was in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #11 in 1977. His incredible body of work includes long and well-remembered runs on Iron ManAmazing Spider-ManX-Men and more. Romita is also the co-creator of Kick-Ass, published by Marvel’s Icon imprint

Joe Kubert is the legendary artist known for his work on Sgt. RockHawkman, and much more. He’s also the founder of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic art in Dover, N.J. Kubert passed away on August 12, 2012, but the three-person panel that determines the recipient of the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award had already chosen Kubert as the recipient of the year’s award.

Romita Jr. joins his father, John Romita, as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. The senior Romita won the award in its inaugural year of 2006. “I had a feeling when John was only 13 years old back in 1969 and suggested the ‘Prowler’ character in Spider-Man that he might follow me into comics and art,” said John Romita. “He’s carried on the family name with a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence in his craft. I’m proud as only a father can be of what he’s accomplished.”

Joe Kubert won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He is the first man to win both Hero awards. “My Dad was an unusually gifted man in many senses,” said Adam Kubert, Joe’s son and a fellow comic artist. “He has touched the lives of many people both directly and through his work. It’s an honor that he has received this award.”

Andy Kubert, another of Joe’s sons and yet another legacy as a fellow artist added, “For a man as talented as my father was, both in the arts and as a person, it is truly an honor for him to receive this award. It’s the first award given to him since his passing a short time ago. For myself, my family, and I’m sure for my father’s many fans, it’s impactful.”

The Awards are given out as part of the Harvey Awards ceremony at the Baltimore Comic-Con each year. Past winners of the awards are:

2011: Mike Gold

2010: Jerry Robinson, Tim Sale

2011: Stan Lee

2010: Walt Simonson

About Joe Kubert:
Born in 1926, Joe Kubert began his career at the age of eleven as an apprentice for Harry “A” Chesler’s comic-book production house. He has worked in the field ever since, and in his more than seventy years with the medium he has produced countless stories for countless characters, including DC Comics’ Hawkman, Tarzan, Enemy Ace, Batman and the Flash as well as his own characters: the heroic caveman, Tor, and Abraham Stone. He also edited, wrote and illustrated the DC title Sgt Rock for thirty years.
In the 1950s, Kubert was a principal in the creation of the first 3-D comic book. During the 1960s, he illustrated Tales of the Green Beret for the Chicago-Tribune New York News Syndicate.
In 1976, Kubert and his wife Muriel founded the first and only accredited school devoted solely to the art of cartoon graphics. The Kubert School, Inc. in Dover, New Jersey, has since produced many of today’s leading cartoonists. Pursuing this educational path further, in 1998 Kubert established a series of correspondence courses under the banner of Joe Kubert’s World of Cartooning. At the same time, he established his website:
Kubert has remained busy throughout the years. The last fifteen years, he has created SGT ROCK: BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL (written by Brian Azzarello) as well as FAX FROM SARAJEVO, YOSSEL, JEW GANGSTER, SGT ROCK: THE PROPHECY, and TOR: A PREHISTORIC ODYSSEY, all written and drawn by Kubert. In addition to these works, he produces PS Magazine for the U.S. Army (as he has since 2000) and has most recently written and illustrated a new graphic novel about a special forces team in Vietnam for DC Comics. DONG XOAI, VIETNAM 1965 is scheduled to be published in May 2010.
Joe Kubert lives in New Jersey. Two of his five children, Adam and Andy, have achieved great notoriety as comic-book artists.

Boston Comic Con 2011 Report

Boston Comic Con 2011 was an unparalleled success!! With an enormous guest list and a new location it was a sink-or-swim moment for the growing convention. Thankfully, they came through and saw a 50% increase in attendance from the previous year and have received rave reviews from guests, fans, and retailers alike. The move to the Hynes Convention Center proved to be an invaluable decision as the venue is far more suited to the convention’s needs than previous sites and its central location in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay made access to food, drink, lodgings, and public transportation much easier.

A flurry of activity went on inside the Hynes that weekend between sketches drawn, comics signed, cosplay photographed, and panel questions asked. Highlights include:

Word is the “Women in Comics” panel held a fiesty debate about gender issues in the comics industry between panelists Stephanie Buscema, Allison Sohn, Ming Doyle (pictured at left), Sara Richard, and Marsha Cooke.

Another fun panel was Frank Cho’s “How to Draw Like a Bad-Ass” in which he solicited ideas from the audience and then raffled off tickets to win the piece drawn. Ultimately he drew a picture of the Avengers’ Tigra fighting off a horde of ninja on a subway train.

The biggest announcement of the convention was the unveiling of Teenage Satan, a multimedia enterprise created by Stephanie Buscema, Marsha Cooke, and Candis Cooke. It’s a webcomic, app, and video game all in one. They also held a swanky after-hours party with burlesque performances provided by the Boston Babydolls which were both titillating and haunting. Check out for more information!

This year’s costume contest was big hit with cosplayers breaking out their best capes and masks. The winner was a B.A. Baracus who pitied the fool who broke character. Another standout was the giant, working mecha suit built by a team of MIT students.

Tim Sale’s birthday was on the Sunday of the convention and he was surprised at his panel with a cake provided by the Riot Grrls.

DC Comics Editorial Director Mark Chiarello and Legendary Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Schreck were both on-hand to review artists portfolio and give advice and tips to the aspiring comic book creators of tomorrow.

Golden Age legend Joe Kubert was only scheduled to appear Sunday but decided to make a surprise appearance on Saturday to the delight of fans and organizers alike. He represented the Kubert School which is the finest institution teaching the craft of creating comics.

Several of the big name artists were much in demand for sketches and signatures including J. Scott Campbell, Frank Quitely, Arthur Adams, Dave Johnson, Matt Wagner, Tony Harris, and more. Sadly, this convention marked the last that superstar artist Adam Hughes will take a sketch request list as he found one of the three he finished in Boston already being sold on ebay mere hours after the show ended. In the future he will auction off sketch requests on ebay beforehand, one per each day of the convention he’s attending.

Finally Boston Comic Con has announced the dates of next year’s show will be April 21-22, 2012! After such a phenomenal convention this year they are also happy to say that they will be returning once again to the Hynes Convention Center! Some big name guests are already lined up and will be announced in the months to come. Follow their website ( as well as the Facebook page and Twitter feed to stay up-to-date on the latest information as it is released! RSVP on Facebook!
