A Special Appearance by Jim Steranko to Highlight the 2016 Inkwell Awards Ceremony at Heroes Con
(New Bedford, MA/USA—June 10, 2016) Results from the 9th annual Inkwell Awards will be presented at the inking advocacy group’s 6th live awards ceremony this June 17-19 at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. Eisner Hall of Fame award-winning creator Jim Steranko will be making a special appearance at the event.
“Graphic artist, comic book writer/artist, historian, magician, editor, publisher and film production illustrator….Jim is a modern Renaissance Man, globally recognized and respected in the sequential art medium for his epics and innovations in the field” said Bob Almond, the non-profit organization’s founder and director. “Having a legendary icon like him speaking on behalf of ink artists and the art form of inking is an immense honor.”
The Inkwells have five categories: Favorite Inker, the “Props” award for under-recognized professionals, the S.P.A.M.I., for Small Press And Mainstream-Independent work, Most-Adaptable Inker and the “All-in-One” for the artist who inks his/her own pencil art. Thousands of voters visited and voted from April 15-30 at the group’s website to show their support.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for Friday (not Saturday as in the past),June 17, 5:00 PM at the Charlotte Convention Center in room 209-210. In addition to Steranko, other speakers include host and presenter Almond, hostess Holly Black as spokesmodel Ms. Inkwell, legendary creator Mike Grell and award-winning author (and Inkwell special ambassador), J. David Spurlock. Announced with the award-winners will be the two recipients of the annual Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award and the second recipient of the Special Recognition Award.
Other attendees include Inkwell ambassadors Laura Martin and Mike McKone, plus contributor Enrica Jang. As an added bonus, the first 20 non-member attendees will receive a raffle ticket for an automatic door prize. After the event, every ticket holder will win a prize as explained at the ceremony.
Almond added, “Last year, with the change of day and the door prizes offered, we had our record-best attendance ever. We plan to repeat that winning combination, especially with Steranko’s appearance.”
The Inkwells will be set up in Artists Alley at table AA-521, offering for donations their new, fifth annual Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge book and plenty of other Inkwells merchandise to help raise much-needed funds. “We’re immensely grateful to promoter Shelton Drum and the Heroes Con staff for supporting the community and giving fans an opportunity to learn more about and appreciate this often overlooked industry craft.”
The Inkwell Awards (www.inkwellawards.com) is an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize the best ink artists and their work. Now in its ninth year, the organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and numerous contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

“The world famous Kubert School, a comic art school in Dover, NJ, will have its own space featuring the legendary artists of tomorrow. We will also have over 300 tables of the country’s best stores and vendors selling some sensational and affordable comic books, toys, artwork and pop culture collectibles. Not only that, we will have the Liberty Science Center presenting fun and interactive demonstrations on how Superhero and Sci-Fi gadgets work,” O’Hare said.
“Of course, you can buy comics at GSCF,” Zurzolo said, “but you can sell comics too. Forget the stock market; diversify your portfolio by investing in valuable collectibles. Youngsters can take a light saber fighting class or a drawing class. Aspiring artists can get advice from our published professionals. We will hold our 4th Garden State Cosplay Showdown, a costume contest for cosplayers (costume player) from all over the country, and we will have a special treat for cosplay fans with world renowned robotics cosplay specialist Thomas DePetrillo as the 9 foot tall HULKBUSTER. NorthEast Comic Con Brings The Original Batman to Shriners Auditorium
Northeast Comic Con brings comic book collectors, cosplay fans and families to Wilmington, Mass. on June 20
WILMINGTON,Mass. (February 17, 2015) – Back by popular demand, fans will meet up at one oft he largest celebrations of popular culture in New England, the Northeast Comic Con and Collectibles Extravaganza. This Father’s Day weekend event takes place Saturday June 20 and Sunday June 21, 2015 at the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass. (99 Fordham Road). Show hours are 10a-6p on Saturday and 10AM – 5PM until Sunday.
This year’s event features a 40,000 sq. ft. entertainment experience for all nerds and the people who love them. Highlights include cosplay for all ages with “Create-A-Hero/Villain/Character” contests and a Cosplay Death Match and Cosplay Dating Game, free-play video game arcade and tournaments, workshops for K!DZ, and celebrity autograph signings and panel sessions. Guests can shop at 150 vendors of vintage and modern toys, comic books, collectibles, art, jewelry, fashion and pop cultural artifacts. In between Father’s Day shopping, guests of all ages will enjoy music, contests and entertainment to marvel at between sessions and booths.
This summer show’s Guest of Honor is Adam West, best known as TV’s original Batman (1966-1968) on the 50th Bat-niversary of the filming of the first episodes, and he is now on Family Guy.
The summer show’s Artist Guest of Honor is Jim Steranko, best known for co-creating the 1960s superspy comic book Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel Comics’ Strange Tales, Captain America, Daredevil, The Avengers and others. Steranko is currently consulting on the current TV series, “Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” More celebrities, artists, authors, illustrators and panelists will be announced shortly.
Kids are invited to the NECC K!DZ area, with creative events and attractions just for young fans. Learn how to craft stories and sketch with Eplis Comics author and artist Emily Drouin, among other kids’ activities.
The Shriner’s Auditorium Fez Room restaurant/bar will come alive with delicious and affordable food and beverages, live entertainment, and pop culture trivia contests.

CAPS TO LAUNCH ART AUCTION FEATURING ORIGINAL WORKS BY MATT GROENING, JACK DAVIS, MIKE MIGNOLA, J. SCOTT CAMPBELL, ADAM HUGHES AND HUNDREDS MORE TO BENEFIT FELLOW CARTOONIST STAN SAKAI AND FAMILY
On Thursday, March 6, 2014, Southern California’s CAPS, the Comic Art Professional Society, will launch an ongoing series of eBay auctions of original comic art. Its goal is to raise funds for medical care for Sharon Sakai, the wife of respected cartoonist and longtime CAPS member Stan Sakai, creator of the samurai rabbit USAGI YOJIMBO. Sharon has been battling a debilitating brain tumor for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is currently at home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicine that costs more than the Sakai’s insurance covers. 100% of the proceeds of these auctions will go directly to Stan and Sharon Sakai to help pay their ongoing medical expenses.
The CAPS auctions will be conducted through eBay.com beginning on Thursday, March 6, with a new set of auctions every following Thursday. Each auction, sold under the seller name of “CAPSauction”, will be ten days in length with twenty to forty items in each set of auctions. The donations of original artwork and collectibles (including newly created art unique to this event, vintage comic book pages, comic strips, illustrations, animation art, limited edition statues, and IDW Artist’s editions books) number over three hundred with new items arriving every day.

Hero Initiative is traveling to the Big Apple to attend New York Comic Con at the Javits Center, October 10th-13th. Hero has a whole lot going on throughout the city to raise money for comic creators in medical and financial need.
Anchoring our booth throughout the weekend is artist Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead). Charlie is journeying all the way from the UK to herald the release of The Walking Dead 100 Project. Make sure you get to the Hero Initiative booth, #1759, to get your copy and signature from Charlie!
In addition, Hero is the ONLY place to find the legendary Golden Age Superman artist Al Plastino. Make sure you come by from 1-7 p.m. on Friday ONLY to meet the man himself!
Hero Initiative is working after hours both Friday and Saturday nights so YOU can party! On Friday October 11th, Image Comics and Multiversity Comics team up to bring you THE BIG NYCC Party to help raise money for Hero Initiative. A $10 cover gets you in to The Houndstooth Pub located on 8th Ave. between 36th and 37th, just a three-block walk from the Javits Center. Be there starting at 8 p.m. to party with some great Image Comics talent! And everyone through the door is automatically entered into a raffle to win a copy of all of Image’s exclusives for NYCC 2013!
On Saturday October 12th, get to JHU Comics at 32 East 32nd St. for the launch party for Jamal Igle’s Molly Danger, Book One! Molly is the world’s most powerful 10-year-old girl and protector of the city of Coopersville. Copies of the graphic novel will be on sale for $19.99, with 25% of the proceeds benefitting Hero Initiative. The party, sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama, Strathmore and Artograph, runs from 9 p.m ’til midnight, and writer/artist Jamal Igle will be on hand to sign copies! Another great way to spend your con weekend and help raise money for Hero!
Back at the convention center, hit the Titan Books booth anytime after noon Saturday to get your “Frogs” print signed and numbered by legendary artist Jim Steranko! Jim will sign and number 100 prints for Hero, available at $20 each, only at the Titan booth, #2142.
