Jeff Smith Returns for Baltimore Comic-Con 2011

The Bone 20th Anniversary Full Color One Volume Collector's Box Set

Press Release:

Jeff Smith Returns to the Baltimore Comic-Con!

Bone 20th Anniversary Collection Makes Its East Coast Debut in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – April 26, 2011 – The Baltimore Comic-Con is excited to announce the addition of renowned cartoonist Jeff Smith to the growing line-up of creators for this year’s show, taking place August 20-21, 2011. As a pioneer of self-publishing, the Harvey and Eisner Awards-winning Smith is best know for his classic all-ages fantasy epic, Bone, an award-winning adventure about three cartoon cousins lost in a world of myth and ancient mysteries, as well as his current science-fiction series, RASL.

Debuting in July 1991, Bone is now a New York Times bestselling series published by Scholastic Books. July 2011 marks the 20th Anniversary of Bone #1 and to celebrate this momentous achievement, Smith’s own Cartoon Books is releasing a limited edition slipcase collection. The Bone: 20th Anniversary Full Color One Volume Collector’s Box Set will make it’s East Coast debut right here in Baltimore.

In 2009, Smith was the subject of the Emmy Award-winning documentary, The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, Bone, and the Changing Face of Comics, and he is currently working on his creator-owned series, RASL, a sci-fi noir tale about an inter-dimensional art thief.

In addition, the Baltimore Comic-Con also welcomes Steve Hamaker, the artist responsible for supplying Smith’s 1344-page masterpiece with vibrant color. Hamaker joined Smith at Cartoon Books in 2000 and was tasked with the mission of bringing Bone from black and white to full-color for Scholastic Books. His work on the series has been nominated for the Harvey and Eisner Awards for Best Coloring.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Jeff Smith and Steve Hamaker here in Baltimore,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Jeff paved the way for self-publishing and practically conceived the modern American graphic novel. His work was made that much better by Steve’s amazing coloring.”

Other confirmed guests for the show including: Jason Aaron (Scalped, PunisherMAX); Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead); Cliff Chiang (Greendale); Frank Cho (Jungle Girl, Hulk); David Finch (Brightest Day, Batman: The Dark Knight); Ron Frenz (Spider-Girl); Mike Grell (Action Comics, The Pilgrim); Jamal Igle (Supergirl, Zatanna); J.G. Jones (Doc Savage, DC Universe Legacies); Barry Kitson (Secret Invasion, Amazing Spider-Man); David Petersen (Mouse Guard); Brandon Peterson (Ultimate Vision, Strange); Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo); and Nick Spencer (Morning Glories, Iron Man 2.0).

UPDATE – The official press release:

MIKE MIGNOLA TO APPEAR AT C2E2 AS GUEST OF HONOR

Noted Creator of Hellboy is Latest Guest Announcement … Many More Guests to be Revealed in Coming Weeks
Norwalk, CT, October 29, 2009: Organizers of the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) have today announced that Mike Mignola will be a Guest of Honor at the new pop culture convention which is being launched April 16 – 18, 2010 at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center. Mr. Mignola joins other previously announced high profile guests such as Alex Ross, who will be a Keystone Guest of Honor at the show, as well as Jackson Guice, Steve McNiven, Jeff Smith, and Ethan Van Sciver, all of whom will be Guests of Honor at C2E2. Show organizers are making it a priority to announce guests early and often to keep all fans fully informed of the dynamic talent from comics, graphic literature, and all corners of pop culture that will be on hand when the show debuts in April.

“Mike Mignola is a brilliant artist, creator, and writer, and I know that there are many fans in and around Chicago who are very eager to see him,” notes Lance Fensterman, Vice President and Show Manager for C2E2. “Mike’s been a big hit at New York Comic Con and the subject of a lot of fan requests for C2E2. We’re very happy to now reveal – as a Halloween treat – he’ll be joining us at McCormick Place!”

In commenting on his appearance at C2E2, Mike Mignola said: “I’m happy to return to the Midwest and I’m especially looking forward to being in the fantastic city of Chicago!”

Mike Mignola is best known as the award-winning creator/writer/artist of Hellboy, a comic series following an eponymous demon, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and their fight against various supernatural forces around the globe. The Hellboy saga, beginning publication in 1993, has crossed across comic books, animation, toys, video games, and – in 2004 – a live-action film starring Ron Perlman. Mignola served as a Visual Consultant for both the 2004 Hellboy motion picture as well as its 2008 sequel, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Outside of Hellboy, Mignola co-authored (with Christopher Golden) the novel BALTIMORE, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire. Mignola lives in southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

As noted, Mignola is the latest of several major guests who have already been announced for C2E2. Convention organizers will be announcing many more guests in the coming weeks and months in order to keep fans fully informed of the top tier talent which will be participating in the new show. Jeff Smith Named a Guest of Honor for C2E2

JEFF SMITH TO APPEAR IN CHICAGO AT C2E2

Noted Cartoonist, Graphic Novelist and Creator of BONE Joins Alex Ross as Guest of Honor

Norwalk, CT, July 9, 2009: Organizers of the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) have today announced that Jeff Smith will appear as a Guest of Honor at the new pop culture convention which is being launched April 16 – 18, 2010 at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center. This will be Mr. Smith’s first appearance in Chicago in ten years and C2E2 officials are pleased to confirm his participation just as the annual American Library Association (ALA) Conference, which is also taking place in Chicago, is set to begin on July 9th. Mr. Smith is highly regarded by the librarian community as graphic novels are an important and growing category for librarians as well as bookstores throughout the country. His BONE series, which has won 41 awards worldwide, including numerous Eisner Awards and Harvey Awards, was recognized by the ALA and Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) in 2002. The new color editions of BONE, which have recently been published by Scholastic, Inc., have sold more than 3 millions copies.

Mr. Smith is the second Guest of Honor to be announced by C2E2. Celebrated comic book painter and Chicago area resident Alex Ross will also appear at the show as its Keystone Guest of Honor. Show officials note that many more guests will be announced in the near future.

“We are incredibly happy that Jeff Smith has agreed to be a Guest of Honor at our show and this is a perfect moment to make this announcement,” notes Lance Fensterman, Vice President and Show Manager for C2E2. “One of our major objectives at ALA this year is to point out the significance of graphic novels in the world of books as well as the pop culture community. Jeff Smith is a standout in this regard. He is an American cartoonist who represents the quality and substance of the graphic novel medium. He has had an enormous influence in encouraging kids and teens to read books and we are very grateful that he’ll be joining us as a Guest of Honor in April.”

“I always have a great time whenever I visit Chicago,” said Smith. I’ve been away for a while, so I look forward to seeing old comics friends and readers, as well as the new generation that’s currently reading the color Scholastic edition of the stories.”

C2E2 is operated by the organizers of BookExpo America (BEA) and both events are sharing a booth (#2030) at ALA. Convention officials recently announced (July 2, 2009) that they are joining with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) to organize a high profile panel and a “meet and greet” brewery party at this year’s ALA Conference. The activities are designed to call attention to free speech and to celebrate graphic novels and their importance in developing young readers. The panel, Ban those @#$*%! Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Censorship, will take place on Monday, July 13, 1:30pm – 3:30pm (McCormick Convention Center, W-184). The brewery party, open to librarians and ALA attendees, will take place at the Piece Brewery (1927 W. North Ave.) on Monday, July 13, from 6pm – 8pm and will be directly followed by a fan meet up from 8pm – 9pm.
