The Crow Creator James O’Barr To Appear at Grand Rapids Comic-Con on November 21-23, 2014
James O’Barr, the artist who is best known as the creator of the comic book series The Crow and the 1994 film of the same name, will be appearing at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con on November 21-23.
In 1978, O’Barr’s fiancée, Beverly, was killed by a drunk driver, and he joined the Marines in an effort to cope with the loss. He was stationed in Germany and illustrated combat manuals for the military. While living in Berlin in 1981, O’Barr began work on The Crow as a means of dealing with his personal tragedy. O’Barr was further inspired by a Detroit newspaper account of the murder of a young couple over a $20 engagement ring. After his discharge from the Marines, O’Barr continued his painting and illustration as well as doing lots of odd jobs, including working for a Detroit body shop. The Crow sat on a shelf for seven years, but at last someone wanted to publish it: Gary Reed of Caliber Press. In The Crow, the protagonist and his fiancée are murdered by a gang of criminals. He then returns from the dead to hunt their killers.
O’Barr’s own hope that his project would result in a personal catharsis went unfulfilled, he told an interviewer in 1994, saying, “[A]s I drew each page, it made me more self-destructive, if anything….There is pure anger on each page”. The Crow has sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide.
The book was adapted into a successful film in 1994, but it resulted in further tragedy. Brandon Lee, who played the main character, was accidentally shot and killed during filming.
The Crow is currently being rebooted by Hollywood, which will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before The Fall) and star Chris Evans (Fast And Furious 6, The Immortals). James has been named as a consultant on the reboot.
“It is great to have James at our little shindig,” said co-event coordinator Mark Hodges. “James has created a truly revolutionary series that has touched many kids and is embraced by certain cultures in society. He has created a work that has touched people in a way that is rare, and we are pleased to bring him to Grand Rapids.”
The Grand Rapids Comic-Con is a popular arts and comic book convention that will be held at the DeltaPlex Arena and Conference Center on November 21-23. For more information check out www.grcomiccon.com.
CAPS TO LAUNCH ART AUCTION FEATURING ORIGINAL WORKS BY MATT GROENING, JACK DAVIS, MIKE MIGNOLA, J. SCOTT CAMPBELL, ADAM HUGHES AND HUNDREDS MORE TO BENEFIT FELLOW CARTOONIST STAN SAKAI AND FAMILY
On Thursday, March 6, 2014, Southern California’s CAPS, the Comic Art Professional Society, will launch an ongoing series of eBay auctions of original comic art. Its goal is to raise funds for medical care for Sharon Sakai, the wife of respected cartoonist and longtime CAPS member Stan Sakai, creator of the samurai rabbit USAGI YOJIMBO. Sharon has been battling a debilitating brain tumor for some time; after an extended hospital stay and convalescence, she is currently at home, but her condition requires 24-hour care and medicine that costs more than the Sakai’s insurance covers. 100% of the proceeds of these auctions will go directly to Stan and Sharon Sakai to help pay their ongoing medical expenses.
The CAPS auctions will be conducted through eBay.com beginning on Thursday, March 6, with a new set of auctions every following Thursday. Each auction, sold under the seller name of “CAPSauction”, will be ten days in length with twenty to forty items in each set of auctions. The donations of original artwork and collectibles (including newly created art unique to this event, vintage comic book pages, comic strips, illustrations, animation art, limited edition statues, and IDW Artist’s editions books) number over three hundred with new items arriving every day.
Contributors include: Adam Hughes, Alex Maleev, Arthur Adams, Batton Lash, Eric Powell, Jan Duursema, Jerry Ordway, Jordi Bernet, Matt Groening, Michael Allred, Mike Mignola, Paul Gulacy, Sanjuliàn, Scott Shaw!, Jim Steranko, Tim Sale, William Stout, Bill Sienkiewicz, Cameron Stewart, Dan Brereton, Daniel Parsons, Dave Gibbons, Dean Yeagle, Doug Sneyd, Dustin Nguyen, Bill Morrison, Tone Rodriguez, Sergio Aragonés, Fabio Moon, Francisco Francavilla, Gene Ha, Geof Darrow, Gilbert Hernandez, Jack Davis, James O’Barr, Kevin Eastman, Jeff Lemire, Jeff Smith, Kazu Kibuishi, Liam Sharp, Tom Richmond, Michael Jantze, Olivia, Oscar Martin, Paul Chadwick, Richard Corben, Tom Mandrake, Walter Simonson, Charles Vess, Dan Spiegle, J. Many of the pieces featuring Usagi Yojimbo will appear in a new oversized hardcover book from Dark Horse, THE SAKAI PROJECT: ARTISTS CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS OF USAGI YOJIMBO, which will be released on July 23, 2014. All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai. Much of the custom Usagi Yojimbo art created for this book will also be sold as a part of CAPS’ online auctions.
These fund-raising auctions will be promoted through ComicArtFans.com, and the CAPS – COMIC ART PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY Facebook page where you will be able to see updated information such as when certain pieces will be auctioned.

The great Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose is just around the corner. Again this year, I’ll be holding one of my very rare art classes where I’ll teach drawing the female figure- veeeery sexy female figures. (This is a felony in some southern states, I believe.) Again this year, the lovely and culo-rrific Ivy Doomkitty will model for me at the live figure drawing class. She’ll be dressed as Dejah Thoris and belly dance for us. (She’s a professional belly-dancer. I kid you not.)
The wonderful thing about Big Wow Comic Fest is that it focuses on the art of drawing and painting comic books. There will be various free art workshops at the convention for the fans, including a costume making workshop for cos-players and acrylic/oil painting classes for fine art lovers. The fans can just watch or draw along with the artists, or just get your comic books autographed – because Big Wow Comic Fest is still a comic book convention.
Don’t forget, This year’s stellar guest list includes the great Jim Lee, Juanjo “Blacksad” Guarnido, Bernie Wrightson, Travis Charest, Kevin Nowlan, Joe Jusko, Bill Morrison, Tim Sale, Brandon Peterson, James O’Barr, Michael Golden, Mike Choi, Tim Vigil, and many many more.

Bill Sienkiewicz and Bernie Wrightson join some of Sci-Fi’s hottest at the DFW SCI-FI EXPO, Feb 11-12
Two comic book legends, Bill Sienkiewicz (ELEKTRA ASSASSIN) and Bernie Wrightson (SWAMP THING), headline the impressive artist lineup at the February 11-12 Sci-Fi Expo. Produced by the men behind the Dallas Comic Con, this year’s Sci-Fi Expo brings in a wide variety of television and movie actors, along with several comic book luminaries including Joe Jusko and Marvel artist Mark Brooks. This is Sienkiewicz’s first trip back to the Big D area after previously appearing at the 2009 Dallas Comic Con – his art recently graced the packaging of the new GODZILLA Blu-ray. Bernie Wrightson has become a favorite guest of the Dallas-based shows, and will be making one of his first major 2012 convention appearances there. Mark Brooks is making time from his busy Marvel schedule to return to Dallas for the first time in many years as well, and Joe Jusko is coming straight to the show from a big trip to Paris! Other comic book personalities attending include James O’Barr (creator of THE CROW), Joe Eisma (artist of MORNING GLORIES), Kerry Gammill (former SUPERMAN artist) and Ben Dunn (creator and artist of NINJA HIGH SCHOOL).
Sci-Fi fans will be thrilled to meet the sexy star of BUFFY and DOLLHOUSE, Eliza Dushku, who is attending the show on Saturday only. Other media personalities include Alexis Cruz (STARGATE), Noah Hathaway (THE NEVERENDING STORY), Angie Bolling (all three ROBOCOP movies) and James Hampton (TEEN WOLF). Event Manager Mark Walters notes, “We pride ourselves in putting together conventions that feature something for everyone, and all with a family-friendly atmosphere. This particular Sci-Fi Expo is our most-ambitious yet, with an incredible mix of talent… we expect the fans will be thrilled.”
