VA – Poe and The Crow: An Evening with James O’Barr

job-poe

James O’Barr, creator of The Crow, appears at the Poe Museum on Thursday September 11th at 6:30 PM!

Press Release:

Separated by 100 years of time and place, you might not at first see any connection between James O’Barr and Edgar Allan Poe…but it’s there. Even if you distill it down to just the fact that one created “The Raven,” the other created “The Crow.” Both iconic works using these avian symbols as metaphors for something far more deeper, darker and richer than one realizes until the stories take flight, transcending the mediums of their own times with creations that indeed took on a life of their own.

For one night in Richmond, Virginia, these two creators– will converge– Poe in spirit, and Mr. O’Barr in the flesh– with “Poe and The Crow: An Evening with James O’Barr,” beginning at 6:30 in the evening with a signing and Q and A, and ending with a screening of “The Crow” starring Brandon Lee– An appropriate look back, with a new Crow movie currently in pre-produciton.

O’Barr’s visit to the Poe Museum coincides nicely with the facilities current exhibition, “The Living Poe,” which deals with Poe in popular culture. In recent months, they have had a series of speakers on the topic of Poe’s continuing influence on today’s arts and culture, and his influence on the modern horror genre. In October, they’ll host Vincent Price’s daughter Victoria Price, who will share her experiences with her father and his love of Poe. And while O’Barr and Mr. Poe are vastly different in their approaches and influences, this evening continues an homage from other creators, be they writers, actors or authors, who strive in the creative process and respect the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

In addition to creating one of the best selling graphic novels of all time, James O’Barr is also the writer of several current hit series, including “Curare,” “Skinning the Wolves” and “Pestilence.” While also serving as a consultant on the upcoming Crow movie. His recent artbook “James O’Barr Uncoffined” has already sold out, and new book is in the works. During the evening at the museum, James will be signing prints, available at the venue, and talking before the screening of “The Crow.”

UK – O’Barr & Golden Signing

golden_obarr_1s

Press Release:

Orbital Comics is very pleased to announce James O’Barr (creator of The Crow), legendary Marvel artist Michael Golden (Avengers, G.I. Joe, Micronauts) and writer/editor/colorist Renee Witterstaetter will be signing in-store on Wednesday May 14 from 5pm. This is a rare opportunity to meet these industry legends and pick up some signed books and prints, so don’t miss out on what is sure to be a great night!

Then, once the store closes at 7:30 pm, we’ll have Michael Golden hosting a very special Dynamic Figure Drawing Class for ticketed customers – so if you’d like to take part then secure your place NOW. You can purchase tickets online at the link or pay for them in-store. Places are extremely limited, so act now if you plan on attending this one-off event!

James O’Barr is the award-winning creator of The Crow, and the writer of two hit series from IDW Publishing, entitled Curare and Skinning The Wolves. He likes to lament that he was born in a trailer in Detroit just in time to see Marilyn Monroe and John Kennedy die, but claims no responsibility for either. He spent his first seven years in an orphanage and foster care where he spent most of his time drawing. When he was adopted he brought along his crayons and has been using them ever since. While stationed in Berlin, in the late 70′s he created The Crow as an attempt to deal with the death of his fiance at the hands of a drunk driver. It took nearly ten years to finish and no publisher was interested in it (“too gloomy, too confusing”) until, on a whim, Caliber published the first issue in 1989. It is currently the best selling independent graphic novel of all time at over one million copies sold. In 1993 his book was adapted into the cult film of the same name starring Brandon Lee. He would like you to know that nearly all of the money made from the film was donated to children’s charities and he had nothing to do with the subsequent three sequels or TV show, but he will be a consultant on the new Crow movie that goes into production this year. He has worked for every major publisher. In Italy 1995, he won the Academy Award of comics, the Yellow Kid award for best storyteller.
Recently returned from a record breaking signing tour for the Italian Edition of The Crow, his most recent book is a new sketchbook from Eva Ink Publishing James O’Barr: Uncoffined.

Artist/writer/creator Michael Golden, is a legend in the comic book industry, but one that has never stopped adding to his legacy as a storytelling professional. Co-creator of The X-Men‘s Rogue, Spartan X, and Bucky O’Hare, Michael is known worldwide for his groundbreaking work on The ‘Nam, Micronauts, G.I. Joe Yearbook, and Dr. Strange, among MUCH more, and is counted as one of the best cover designers and illustrators in the business. Golden’s work can be seen on covers from Spawn, Nightwing, Iron Man, Heroes For Hire, Exiles, Demon’s Regret, Spider-man, Vampirella, Captain American, The Punisher to The Hulk, as well as numerous other titles, for about every company out there. It’s no wonder that Golden has been one of the most influential creators around for the last several decades: “… unless you can actually draw yourself, it is very difficult to understand the exact mind-blowing impossibility of what he does,” said writer/artist Larry Hama, of Golden’s work. Michael has served as an Editor at DC Comics as well as Senior Art Director at Marvel Comics, and has worked on scores of movie production projects, some currently in development. He has recently been awarded with Lifetime Achievement Awards from The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and the Lille Arts Festival.

Renee Witterstaetter is the author of Excess: The Art of Michael Golden, Tex: The Art of Mark Texeira, the critically acclaimed Nick Cardy: The Artist at War, Dying for Action: The Life & Films of Jackie Chan, Kerry & the Scary Things, Nick Cardy: Wit-Lash, and much more. Renee began the comic phase of her career working on such titles as Superman at DC Comics and Silver Surfer, Conan The Barbarian and Conan Saga at Marvel, then spearheading the reintroduction of She-Hulk at Marvel. She then moved over to Topps Comics where she was the editor on The X-Files, Jurassic Park, Xena & Hercules and, co-creating with artist Michael Golden, the successful series, Spartan X. Her newest books include Santa Confidential, by Hagar the Horrible artist Chris Browne and the sketchbook James O’Barr: Uncoffined. In addition, Renee has also been the colorist on hundreds of comics from The Avengers to Spider-man to Captain America among many, many more. Film work was a natural progression for Renee after this storytelling immersion in comics, and she has since worked on dozens of music videos for Madonna, Seal, Ben Harper and Usher, as well as the feature movies Crime Story, Rush Hour 2, and Red Dragon, among others. She is the President of Little Eva Ink Publishing and is also currently working in artist management via Eva Ink Artist Group.

James O’Barr to Appear at Grand Rapids Comic-Con 2014

Crow

Press Release:

The Crow Creator James O’Barr To Appear at Grand Rapids Comic-Con on November 21-23, 2014

James O’Barr, the artist who is best known as the creator of the comic book series The Crow and the 1994 film of the same name, will be appearing at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con on November 21-23.

In 1978, O’Barr’s fiancée, Beverly, was killed by a drunk driver, and he joined the Marines in an effort to cope with the loss. He was stationed in Germany and illustrated combat manuals for the military. While living in Berlin in 1981, O’Barr began work on The Crow as a means of dealing with his personal tragedy. O’Barr was further inspired by a Detroit newspaper account of the murder of a young couple over a $20 engagement ring. After his discharge from the Marines, O’Barr continued his painting and illustration as well as doing lots of odd jobs, including working for a Detroit body shop. The Crow sat on a shelf for seven years, but at last someone wanted to publish it: Gary Reed of Caliber Press. In The Crow, the protagonist and his fiancée are murdered by a gang of criminals. He then returns from the dead to hunt their killers.

O’Barr’s own hope that his project would result in a personal catharsis went unfulfilled, he told an interviewer in 1994, saying, “[A]s I drew each page, it made me more self-destructive, if anything….There is pure anger on each page”. The Crow has sold more than 750,000 copies worldwide.

The book was adapted into a successful film in 1994, but it resulted in further tragedy. Brandon Lee, who played the main character, was accidentally shot and killed during filming.

The Crow is currently being rebooted by Hollywood, which will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez (Before The Fall) and star Chris Evans (Fast And Furious 6, The Immortals). James has been named as a consultant on the reboot.

“It is great to have James at our little shindig,” said co-event coordinator Mark Hodges. “James has created a truly revolutionary series that has touched many kids and is embraced by certain cultures in society. He has created a work that has touched people in a way that is rare, and we are pleased to bring him to Grand Rapids.”

The Grand Rapids Comic-Con is a popular arts and comic book convention that will be held at the DeltaPlex Arena and Conference Center on November 21-23. For more information check out www.grcomiccon.com.
